The great shift left, with it's ever-increasing taxes and ever-decreasing personal freedoms, will eventually lead to dissent and a reversal of direction. Ironically, this will probably begin with politically active college students (a la 60's). Interesting to contemplate also is the fact that today's declining quality of education is creating a class of non-free-thinking sheep that once started in any direction will follow the flock.
