As far a Stocking up on food, You can buy so M.R.E's and they are great to have as "Emergency meals" and sometimes snacks, But MRE's are expensive, and I can't imagine living for long periods of time on them. But there are great alternatives, and not only do they keep but the are great for anytime meals. Do a search you'll find some good suggestions for meals.
