ASME Creates New Category for Best Obsequious Obama Cover
The media's servile adoration of the Marxist community activist it put in the White House has reached the farthest extremes of self-parody. From Advertising Age:
We thought we were being a little bratty last year when we ran a list of "Hagiographic Cover Treatments of Obama" along with "10 Covers We Loved" for 2008.
But maybe we were not just bratty but onto something. Because this year the American Society of Magazine Editors has expanded its annual cover contest to include a whole category for covers featuring Barack Obama.
You would think even liberals would see the value of a media that does not regard the head of the government as a deity. When the information industry follows the auto industry down the socialist hole into federal ownership and control, no one will notice the difference.

Aw, VH!!! Don't scare me like that!!! I saw ASME and just about freaked.
What's next? The SAE, ASTM? NIST? Will the Loopy, Loony, Lying, Lobotomized Lemming-Like Leftist Liberal Loser™ madness ever end?
When do I get to wake from this awful dream??

Oh that ASME.

Murff & Blogprof - as you may have guessed by now, I'm a big fan of Absolutely Audacious And Awesome Alliteration.....or something like that!
What I want to know is, with regards to the Obama presidency, do the ASME and ASTM standards call for a flat-tined D-handled pitchfork, or a round-tined straight-handle pitchfork? Are these standards the same if you are pro-Obama and using said pitchfork to facilitate implementation of administration policies, or if you are using said agricultural implement as a protest tool?
Will there be any applicable Mil-Specs? Will an NSN Number be assigned? Who is coordinating with the Dept. of Agriculture?
Do these pitchforks have to be used in conjunction with a suitable illumination device, i.e., a “torch”, after the hours of civil twilight and before civil dawn? Will the applicable illumination standards be governed by ASME, ASTM, or SAE? Will we need to get NFPA involved since torches are a fuel burning device? Are there EPA Standards?
My, my, my – so much bureaucratic meddling to be done, so little time!!!
As you can tell, it’s Friday afternoon, work is ending, beer call is coming up very soon, and I’m getting, how shall we say, just a wee bit “punchy?”

Posted by: Judith M. at June 5, 2009 3:17 PM
TonyD95B, since ASME, SAW et al are populated by academics who are 9-1 pro-Obama, there will no longer be standards for pitchforks. The only legal use for a pitchfork from now on is to gather hay for Obama's straw-men. That's all. Torches are furthermore banned for anti-global warming purposes.
Just thought you should know...

Do you seriously think we're angry because Obama's picture is on magazine covers? We're angry because of the TYPE of pictures.
The sad thing is that you DON'T see anything wrong with this. A fawning media is fine with you. Obama isn't a mere president to them, he's a rock star. And you're cool with that.
Posted by: Evil Otto at June 6, 2009 6:00 AM
Actually, Otto, I'm not even angry about it. I think the efforts of the media to portray Dear Leader as ... in the words of Newsweek's Evan Thomas... a "sort of God"... should be dissected to make thinking people aware of the manipulation the media is trying to subject them to; and to make them question the objectivity of publications that have become nothing but one-sided propaganda publications for the Dear Leader.
Skepticism of politicians is not only healthy, but necessary. But obviously, some members of the Cult of the One don't want to be woken up. They don't want their Dear Leader, their "sort of God" to be subject to scrutiny.

Brandon, are you joking? Is Obama more important than any other President? Why? Because he's half black? I don't recall any other president ever being treated this way. However, I do remember a couple of instances from history where a leader was treated in a similar way--the Third Reich and Stalinist Russia.

Well, in the Third Reich and USSR, the media went along because of fear. Here, the media goes along because they genuinely LOVE The One. If they had done their jobs, Obama never would have made it out of the primaries.

Nice try, Brando. But Reagan was hated by the media throughout his term. He never got magazine covers with halos around his head. He didn't have schoolchildren singing hymns to him. He didn't have magazine editors declaring that he was "sort of God." News anchors did not bow in his presence.
Also, Reagan was not honored until he had actual achievements.
There's a big difference between showing respect for an accomplished political figure, and mindless worship of a figurehead. Are you aware of that? Your recent comments suggest that you are not.

Posted by: V the K at June 6, 2009 10:59 AM
One's accomplished political figure is another's figurehead.
To me, that is precisely what they all are - figurehead's using their position to sell ideas.
Posted by: Brandon at June 6, 2009 12:11 PM
Brandon,
Do you even understand the meaning of the word "figurehead?" A PRESIDENT is not a figurehead. He's literally the most powerful man on the planet. His words change things, his actions alter history. Even a nothing like Obama gets to put his stamp on history. And the idea Obama is "selling" is socialism.
Posted by: Evil Otto at June 6, 2009 1:00 PM
Brandon,
How many of the items you listed as being named after Reagan happened while he was in office? None you say? You mean we waited until after he was President and accomplished many things?
Color me shocked.
Posted by: Richard C. at June 6, 2009 1:08 PM
Doesn't matter to me if it happened before or after. During the campaign, Obama stood for something new, something that many people desired. He embodied that, just as Reagan embodied something else. Thus he becomes a figurehead, or a symbol.
You don't have to be president to be a symbol.
Personally I prefer to let facts and philosophies stand on their own without symbols.
I'm also not saying that Obama is more important than any other president. What I'm saying is that he was more important than any other president in 2008.
Posted by: Brandon at June 6, 2009 1:47 PM
Brandon, you're missing the point. I fully expect that some individuals will find Obama "adorable".
However, I don't like people who are responsible for reporting the news showing clear evidence of subjectivity when it comes to Obama. If they can't be objective, they need to find a field where objectivity is not an essential virtue for doing the job properly. And it's not objective to put Obama on the cover of every magazine cover in the country even though he hasn't done anything of note.
Posted by: Judith M. at June 6, 2009 2:43 PM
Ah, perception=reality. Got it, Brandon.
Posted by: Evil Otto at June 6, 2009 2:44 PM

Typical stupid lefty equivalence... comparing Reagan being honored after actual achievements to Obama being worshiped for being half black and reading a Teleprompter.
The only purpose of this guy's comment is to remind us how shallow is the mind and how poor is the reasoning of the progressive leftist.
Posted by: V the K at June 6, 2009 5:20 PM
I made the assumption that all idolatry is presumed to be childish. I guess you like idolatry when you agree with the idol.
My first comment here though has nothing to do with these arguments. It simply relies on the fact that this cover competition is not about honoring obama, but honoring whoever made the best cover with obama on it. I would think that an apropriate topic no matter who won the election. It would be like having a contest for the best Iraq War cover - it's a topic that is relevant to all of us.
Posted by: Brandon at June 6, 2009 6:18 PM
As for your last comment, I can easily see several moves ahead if we follow that line of reasoning:
"You're stupid!"
"No, you're stupid!"
"No, you're stupid!"
"No, you're stupid!"
there, now we can skip that part
Posted by: Brandon at June 6, 2009 6:24 PM
A whole category for Obama covers, Brandon? Don't you see there is something awry that there are so many covers of Obama that they created a whole category just for those? He's one guy, for God's sakes, and not a very impressive one, at that!
Posted by: Judith M. at June 6, 2009 6:40 PM
Magazine covers are designed to sell magazines.
Obama's image was great at selling magazines.
Now that the country is used to him, you won't see the same thing in the next election.
Posted by: Brandon at June 6, 2009 7:13 PM
What has Hopey McChange done to deserve this adoration, BRANDON? All you said was that he had "new ideas". THAT'S IT? THAT'S WHY YOU WORSHIP THIS NOTHING?
Come on, list some of his accomplishments.
And being half black doesn't count.
Posted by: KHarn at June 6, 2009 9:12 PM

Posted by: Anonymous at June 6, 2009 10:45 PM
I think Brandon's drunk way-too-much Kool-Aid to think the abject worship of Obama by the media is in any way improper.
Did ASME ever have a contest to decide the most flattering cover of GW Bush? I think not.
When the press ceases to become skeptical of politicians, and become their cheerleaders and priesthood, they're nothing more than propaganda organs and not to be trusted. And that is why we call them out on it.
Posted by: V the K at June 7, 2009 4:54 AM
When has the press unbiased? As I've said before, you can purchase whatever news you like. You can be spoon fed Fox or MSNBC you can listen to Rush or that Amy what's her name.
if you think the press is unbiased, or can be, your the fool. If you elect a predident based on a magazine cover, your the fool. If you think there is some conspiracy putting obama on the cover of magazines, show some proof, or your a fool.
In case you didn't know, we still have a free market in the magazine industry. There are magazines that span the entire range of the political spectrum. The magazines that show up on news stands are the ones that people buy.
Posted by: Brandon at June 7, 2009 8:41 AM
I guess I am a fool, Brandon, because I believe it is humanly possible to write objectively regardless of your personal preferences. Of course, accomplishing that feat requires self restraint. It is this self restraint that is so obviously lacking within the MSM at this time. They can't even give the APPEARANCE of objectivity.
Posted by: Judith M. at June 7, 2009 10:04 AM
You have not answered my question, BRANDON. Are you afraid, or do you just not know the answer? If it is the later, then why do you support Hopey McChange?
Posted by: KHarn at June 7, 2009 3:50 PM
So, Brandon admits the press is biased, but he still cries like a little bitch when the bias of the press is pointed out.
I don't get it. (But at least it's progress from his original "i see nothing wonrg with this" denial of bias.)
Posted by: V the K at June 7, 2009 6:19 PM

Posted by: Brandon at June 7, 2009 8:41 AM
There's a reason that Time and Newsweek are losing circulation (and money). There's a reason why the Wall Street Journal is the only major newspaper increasing its circulation.
See if you can figure out what those reasons are.
Posted by: mandible claw at June 8, 2009 1:56 AM
I'm the one complaining about the press being biased? No, this post is a complaint. Both the left and the right complain about press bias. I see it as a fact of life, something to deal with.
Maybe it's possible to be unbiased, but I don't see how. We all have foundational beleifs and biases. Just as one example, compare how any country reports on it's internal affairs vs. its external affairs. Newspapers are always colder and harsher when reporting about events occuring in other countries, and much more sympathetic to events occuring within the country, as a generalization.
I still see nothing wrong with the contest.
Posted by: Brandon at June 8, 2009 9:09 AM
One way to write fairly is to admit what your biases are and to be particularly cautious when covering issues that are hot buttons for you to fight against your natural inclinations and to do your best to see things from the other side and to include that perspective to the best of your ability. But the idea that the left and the right suffer equally from media bias is nonsense. About 90% of the MSM is rabidly liberal, so conservatives are outnumbered 9 to 1 in terms of representation in the media and it shows.
