Obama Now Dictating What Cars Will Be Made
Obviously the Moonbat Messiah is not showering $billions of our money on failed auto companies without expecting something in return. He wants what liberals always want — coercive power:
[D]espite Obama's protestations that he has no interest in running auto companies, it's clear that —with huge sums of federal tax money sunk into Chrysler and GM — he will be very hands-on.
The U.S. government will appoint four of the nine board members of the new Chrysler, with alliance partner Fiat naming only three and the UAW and Canadian government getting one spot each.
And one condition of Fiat boosting its stake in Chrysler from 20% to 35% is that Fiat-Chrysler build a 40-miles-per-gallon car in the United States.
Yes, the U.S. government, as a quid pro quo for surrendering more control of Chrysler to Fiat, is dictating what kind of cars must be built.
A community activist is now in charge of what cars are made. At least this is good news for Toyota — except that when no one wants to buy the government-mandated golf carts squirted out by Detroit in the brief intervals between union coffee breaks, tariffs will be imposed to make real cars unaffordable.
But there is a bright side: the more people are killed driving flimsy little death traps, the less polar bear–oppressing CO2 will be emitted.

This scheme of Obama running American auto production falls apart if he cannot get union card-checking implimented in the foreign car industry based in the U.S.. I think because of various trade treaties he will have a very hard time getting Toyota and the rest of foreign owned auto makers to go along with this. Furthermore, since most of these foreign owned plants are in the south, he may have some trouble getting Southern congressmen on board.

To Spurwing:
The original Volkswagen Beetle was originally designed as a 'Peoples' Car' ( the literal translation of Volkswagen) by the Third Reich.

You liberals accused Bush of wanting to control everything and everybody, so you backed Hopey McChange. Now you get to see what REAL totalitarianism is like.
I hope you're happy.

Obama's party plans to skyrocket energy (fuel) prices by taxation, then force the citizenry to buy efficient vehicles to bring home a double-whammy of bacon.
It's fascism by Mussolini's own definitions.
The writing's on the wall, and it is criminal.

Oh no! You guys are right as usual! A 40 mpg car ... this MUST be totalitarianism. Trying to get Americans to, you know, actually BUY our cars instead of Hondas.
(By the way, Honda, that's a Japanese brand that gets 40 mpg that crazy liberals drive)

Besides, would it be better if he just handed the money to the idiot car companies and let them throw it away?
Or ... maybe he should try and make sure that the money is put to good use and the company can get back on its feet. No, your idea is better. Let's let the idiot car companies make more of the same cars that very few people want.

Anonymous, if you were only being sarcastic, I would have let it go. But since you're a knee-jerk Liberal, your post just sounds stupid.

In an attempt at sarcasm, Anonymous writes, "Oh no! You guys are right as usual! A 40 mpg car ... this MUST be totalitarianism. Trying to get Americans to, you know, actually BUY our cars instead of Hondas.

Well! Now we know how to identify the "crazy liberals" - they're the ones driving the 40 mpg Hondas. Please alert Karl Rove and the rest of the VRWC immediately!!!
Although there are lots of crazy liberals (some dangerously so) we won't find too many of them this way - most Hondas don't get anwhere near 40 mpg.
Some of my siblings have bought Hondas. I never really liked them, and the mileage was never as good as advertised. What I really hated were those obnoxious, oh-so-clever ad campaigns. They make good portable generators, though.
I bought two new Nissans, and they were great vehicles, especially the one that was built in Smyrna TN, USA. They were inexpensive, easy to maintain, and provided excellent utility and overall economy. Exactly the sort of vehicles that would appeal to a "Conservative" sort like myself who does not like to "spread the wealth" around too "Liberal(ly)"
My gal is equally thrifty - having spent her entire career since college working for various non-profits, conservative fiscal behavior comes naturally, and her weapon of choice is currently a 2006 Kia.
I have had lots of 4 cylinder 5 speed "econovehicles" over the years, ranging from a BMW Z-3 to Nissans and Jeeps. The absolutely hands down best vehicle I ever owned was a 4 cylinder 5 speed 4WD (real Command Trac 4WD)Jeep Cherokee Pioneer. The "Blizzard Lizard" would go anywere (and went everywhere), was a car, truck, camper, tow vehicle (suprisingly well if you knew how to shift) stump puller, and was virtually indestructible. It had a quarter of a million miles on it when I sold it to the kid that wrecked it. Average MPG was as good as my siter's Honda CRV, too.
Exactly the sort of vehicle that would appeal to a "Conservative" sort like myself who does not like to "spread the wealth" around too "Liberal(ly)"
It's a shame my short sighted Liberal neighbors couldn't see past the fact that it was an "SUV".
Hey, don't get me wrong, though - we Conservatives still like to have fun wasting natural resources and warming up the planet for the polar bears. When I want to do that up right I crank up my red (state?) and white 1972 Chevelle SS convertible with the cowl inducted big block V-8 and 4 speed. Not much on "Miles Per Gallon" - but it kicks butt on "Smiles Per Gallon".

Since you say nothing of it, I guess I was right. Your solution is to let the car companies waste the money that was given them. Better that than make some staffing changes.

"smiles per gallon" that actually did make me smile.
"Exactly the sort of vehicle that would appeal to a "Conservative" sort like myself who does not like to "spread the wealth" around too "Liberal(ly)""
What this has to do with anything here is quite mystifying. I say burn as much gas as you want, but saving gas is spreading the wealth? You guys can turn anything into a socialist plot.
Maybe, just maybe, you could keep some wealth in your own pocket, instead of smiling so many times per mile.

Anonymous (or is it Moon bat?): If you cannot understand how my post relates to the story (or to your comment), then I am afraid I would NEVER be able to explain it to you.
"Socialist Plot"? Yeah, I'll let that one go by - it's consistent with your usual rebuttal pattern. Next you'll tell me I'm paranoid, too....oh wait....who else did you tell? C'mon....WHO ELSE???
What never ceases to amaze me is how you can be so d#mn negative about EVERYTHING.
Are you depressed? Do you need help? What's with this freakin' angry, constantly offended pseudointellectual I'm-smarter-than-you-are false moral superiority thing you got goin' on?
Oh, wait....that's liberalism. Sorry.....

Yet another trolling chicken shit Anonypussy.
HOSTILE!!!!!!!!
Now go play with your hammer and sickle you socialist jackass!

Anonymous troll, maybe we can compromise.
How about the government that can't run Medicare and has bankrupted Social Security keep its grubby paws off of private business? In return, GM, Chrysler, and whoever else is bloated and bleeding, gets to fail, as any private business that can't service its debt would. Said businesses get to restructure their debts and obligations (INCLUDING UAW CONTRACTS) under Chapter 11 protection. That's why it exists, dontcha know.
That way, someone else who thinks they can make cars and be profitable gets to step up. They might even make a few cars you like! They might even rehire some previously laid-off, experienced labor! Obama can even take credit for helping to "create" jobs, as I'm sure he would anyway!
Deal? It seems like a win-win all around, and certainly answers your "concerns."
On a more serious note, who do you liberals always look to the government first and foremost to fix any "problem" you see? What actions in recent, or even long-term, memory can you point to and say, "Look at that efficient government, fixing problems and making everything all better!"

That isn't the only thing the Obamafuhrer has mandated. He has directed that GM and Chrysler withdraw all cars and monies from NASCAR racing venues. Must be all those gun toting bible holding xenophobe right wing extremists that caused that decision to be made.

Don't we already have a 40 mpg car here in the states? I can't remember what it was called...
Oh yeah... I remember:
Four-cylinder diesel.
Funny, they've been around for forty years now too.
