Newsweek Celebrates Mad Pride
The latest milestone in our march to Bedlam is called mad pride. Newsreek informs us that psychosis should be embraced as a "creative force."
Meet Will Hall, the elite media's conception of an ideal human being:
The 43-year-old has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, and doctors have prescribed antipsychotic medication for him. But Hall would rather value his mentally extreme states than try to suppress them, so he doesn't take his meds. Instead, he practices yoga and avoids coffee and sugar. He is delicate and thin, with dark plum polish on his fingernails and black fashion sneakers on his feet, his half Native American ancestry evident in his dark hair and dark eyes. Cultivated and charismatic, he is also unusually energetic, so much so that he seems to be vibrating even when sitting still.
Hall is a leader of the "mad pride" collective, which promotes the idea that mental illness is not an illness but a "gift." He doesn't like it that society still discriminates between "crazy" and "healthy" behavior. His own behavior is so far into the crazy zone, he managed to lose his job at an environmental organization due to his "frenetic state." After that he devoted himself to walking around San Francisco at night, listening to the "furious voices in his head." He has "bounced in and out of a public psychiatric hospital," and believes that plants communicate with him. But don't go passing judgment on the healthiness of his mental condition.
By embracing his insanity and encouraging other loonies not to take their pills, Hall hopes to "push the emergence of mental diversity." Newsbleak purrs with approval.
Next on the liberal agenda: evil pride, whereby activists insist we stop discriminating between right and wrong, so that we can celebrate the emergence of moral diversity. But then, we already have the Democrat Party.

On a tip from V the K.

This story strikes home due to the fact the I suffer from A.D.H.D. Yes, I did stop taking my pills but the reason was because they made me Bi-polar and zombie like.
Also, the only good mental illness is A.D.H.D. But I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

Yet another data point for getting a concealed carry permit. How many mentally ill people are there out there refusing to take their meds, who may decide violence is a great idea?

This underscores the point about resisting liberal social policies. Although they deny it with their dying breaths, and disparage the "slippery slope" argument, as soon as they achieve policy N they start working on policy N+1.

Did you think dealing with the mentally ill would be easy?
So like myself, you are troubled a bit by mad pride, but what is your solution?
Additionally, this guy does not advocate murder but among those who are seriously sick I suppose it is always a threat. Nancy, is it more of a threat than other forms of violence like the drivers who routinely threaten my safety? Sometimes they seem downright crazy in their ignorance, arrogance, and willingness to be violent. I wish there were meds for raging road hog soccer moms on the cell phone driving an SUV during their 'stressful' days. This is real violence from a real person I am describing. If I was allowed I would have at least shot out her tires, but in the end I need to find a different solution because our laws forbid such open warfare.

Whiskey-Tango-Freakin-Foxtrot???
Your personal brand of "Mental Diversity" is starting to make me wonder......

I can't wait for the "mad pride" parade. It'll be a rip snorter.

Good call Tony. That rambling was a little much for me as well.

By the way I have been vetted and background checked and put through psychological testing for my job, but you don't need to hear about that, you can perform that service over the internet :)
Nancy wanted to talk about violence, my experience with violence comes mostly from drivers on the road. But don't be bothered to actually ask a question, just dismiss as crazy anything you don't understand, if you prefer.
Cars and driving are the most dangerous things out there, look it up if you want.

I thought I would add that Nancy bring up concealed carry is a tangent. One I tried to address with another tangent, namely cars.
Are you that sensitive?
Well, how about some sensitivity training. All mentally ill people are not psychotic, so bringing up Norman Bates, a fictional character, in the discussion of mad pride is pretty much indicative of ignorance toward the subject of mental illness, right? There are many flavors of mental illness, besides this individual's case of diagnosed scizophrenia, right? Also, being diagnosed anti-psychotics does not indicate that the patient is a psychotic, thus the reference to Norman Bates is spurious.
Now go research how many people take medication for depression in the last decade or two. On the rise since SSRIs came to market. Mental illness as a category seems greatly expanded in some cases, and treated more pervasively since that movie was made (for instance).
Violence is a risk for only some mental illnesses, and in general the mentally ill are not considered a threat unless they have a history of such activity. But Van Helsing feels probably that his post was more than scare propaganda, but for me its simply that. Crafted this way to up the fear perhaps in people like Nancy who now thinks that a concealed carry permit might help avoid a violent attack from some crazy person. Ignorance is on display in the article, the comments, and these replies in many cases. It just takes someone who knows more to spot it. I just made a good faith effort to show generally where I spot it. I don't have all day to write.
Lastly, this entire site is predicated on labeling a particular political view as mentally ill. Right? Liberals are moonbats, lets find suggestive material that this is true, post it with a funny picture, and laugh about it. Laugh, this is an entertainment site.
But its just ridicule. All you are doing is ridiculing people you know hardly anything about, and you are labeling them as mentally ill. What could be more insulting? I think you all might consider the wisdom of actually posting in support of Van Helsing, since its so often EASY to poke holes in what he asserts. But its all a joke right? You can pour hateful invective all over people you disagree with since its a free country! Never mind the actual wisdom of doing such a thing on a regular basis.
I don't even WANT to go comment on the "baby killing" thread. How about you consider this, some babies, even in the womb, are mentally ill. Now picture Norman Bates in your favorite female's womb, and you will understand the gravity of the subject you are joking about.
Have a nice day!

cave ahht continues ad nauseun / ad infinitum, including:
"You can pour hateful invective all over people you disagree with since its a free country! Never mind the actual wisdom of doing such a thing on a regular basis."
That sounds like a pretty good description of what you'be been doing, cave ahht.
I'll keep my reply short - here's where I'm at (and I think I speak for most of the other posters in this thread):
Compassion and understanding for those afflicted with mental illnes - Check.
Disdain for those who choose to ignore reality and behave as "Moonbats" - Check.
A sense of optimism and a sense of humor - Check
Alarm at posters who talk about comitting a "Road Rage" shooting because someone else is driving an SUV and using a cellphone - Check.
I could go on, but why bother - you've already stopped reading and started typing your reply.
