Media Rails Against Unruly California Voters

As the failure of proposals to dig California deeper into a hole by raising taxes even higher proves, democracy is still alive in the Golden State — to the disgust of the authoritarian media elite. Sneers the New York Times:

Direct democracy has once again upended California — enough so that the state may finally consider another way by overhauling its Constitution for the first time in 130 years.

By overhauling its constitution, as recommended by odious San Franfreakshow mayor Gavin Newsom, California bureaucrats can cut their tedious constituents out of the loop, raising taxes ever higher until the last employed Californian flees the state in terror.

The only measure to pass was the one the Slimes didn't like:

The only ballot measure to succeed was one that prevented lawmakers and constitutional officers from getting raises in times of fiscal distress, a sort of chin-out electoral scowl by voters, who will now probably see their health care systems, schools and other services erode.

The article drips with contempt for the petulant voters for throwing a tantrum instead of letting their wise rulers spend their last pennies for them. Naturally the state's financial problems are not the result of bureaucrats throwing money to the four winds and refusing to lift a finger to keep out the illegal aliens who cost the state at least $10.5 billion per year, but to "its odd and in many ways outmoded way of doing business" — i.e., letting the taxed have some say in how much they're taxed.

The Marxists at the Times needn't worry. This little speed bump on the road to socialist ruin will be overruled by the hard left activist courts, as has been done to the will of California voters many times before.

The Sacramento Bee was equally annoyed at taxpayers, publishing a tantrum of its own — which was met with such outrage by those same taxpayers, who are also the Bee's customers, that the diatribe denouncing them was pulled. But you can still read it at Doug Ross @ Journal.

Comments

California politicians continue to threaten to empty the prisons and lay off firefighters and police officers if tax payers don’t cough up billions of dollars in new taxes during a Depression.

Maybe the citizens of California need to pass a state proposition that puts certain things as top priorities that get done no matter what so the liberals can’t hold these issues hostage, threatening to cut them first.

For example, we should:

1.) Always keep criminals locked up for their full sentences

2.) Always repair potholes and fix roads so they don’t get so bad they start damaging cars

3.) Always have enough police and firefighters

Perhaps another proposition could tell politicians that before cutting anything else every single illegal alien needs to be deported from the state.

Illegal aliens cost the state of California an estimated $13 billion dollars per year in combined medical costs, public education, police and court costs. This is why California is running yearly deficits that run into the tens of billions of dollars. The crazy socialist legislature of California won’t deport the illegals, so the state debt just keeps mounting.

Hate New York City
It's cold and it's damp
And all the people dressed like monkeys
Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos
That town's a little bit too rugged
For you and me you bad girl

Rollin' down the Imperial Highway
With a big nasty redhead at my side
Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north
And we as born to ride

Roll down the window put down the top
Crank up the Beach Boys baby
Don't let the music stop
We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more

>From the South Bay to the Valley
>From the West Side to the East Side
Everybody's very happy
'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day

I love L.A. (We love it)
I love L.A. (We love it)

Look at that mountain
Look at those trees
Look at that bum over there, man
He's down on his knees
Look at these women
There ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere

Century Boulevard (We love it)
Victory Boulevard (We love it)
Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it)
Sixth Street (We love it, we love it)

I love L.A.
I love L.A.
(We love it)

Does that account for inflation?

There is the possibility that illegals will deport themselves when opportunity in California falls below that of Mexico.

One californai birdcage liner ran front page headlines with NO printed in big bold black letters as it is always with these wretched left-wing dirt spewing liberal journalists its no wonder their losing readers

We here in NORTHERN CALFORNIA have always been wanting to suceede from KALIFORNIA and form the 51st state of JEFFERSON

Posted by: Flu-Bird at May 22, 2009 9:21 AM

FlupBird, I think that can be done constitutionally with the approval of the state and federally legislatures. I seem to recall this idea popping up some years ago over resources like water and energy.

I'd like to see Prop. 1F, the one the NYT didn't like, extended to all state employees. No state employee - none - should get a raise when the state runs a deficit. And by "getting a raise" I mean "being paid more money." Yeah, I'd thought of the obvious dodge: changing a person's job title to one with a higher salary and saying that wasn't a raise.

Another virtue if California split the same people would gain two additional Senators.

It used to be the San Andreas Fault - now it's all Ahhnold's fault.....and he had lots of help.

I believe the usual term is “uppity.”

It is very clear to us working hard and high tax paying people in CA that one of the biggest sucking sounds in the state budget is Illegal Immigrants.

Yes Billions of Dollars of deficit in CA is directly attributal to the Illegial Immigrant Sucking Sound - and the CA taxpayer is the sucker.

Only 5% of Illegals actually pick crops in CA. The MSM would have you believe that the majority are necessary for food production - lie.

The state welfare system, medical assistance/care, hospital system, primary through community college school system is now officially crushed under the weight of illegal immigration.

All of my law enforcement buddies in LA, San Fran, San Jose (many of who are latinos) will tell you that they would not need so many police if it were not for the dramatic % of overall crime is related to Illegial Immigrants and Illegal Immigrant activities.

And meanwhile, the state continues to add very highly compensated state union employees to the books............

I live here and want to see the system totally fail.

Unless the system totally fails for a little while, the adverage CA 'head up ass or in the sand' idiot will not pay attention to force a solution to fix it.

And yes - I forced my immediate and extended family to get out and vote, and it seems that we were exactly alligned with the majority of voters who turned out in CA.

I think the fact that 25% of eligible voters turned out directly reflects to roughly the working and tax paying middle class. The only exception being the ACORN get out the vote efforts in Oakland and LA but that failed because people on welfare don't pay taxes, they just suck them up, and they were not passionate about it.

Remember, the people that wanted these smoke and mirrors props to pass (and wanted 1F to fail) spent 10 times as much money.
