10 Reasons to Vote for Dems

I've often wondered how anyone who isn't a lawyer, an apparatchik, a terrorist, or on welfare could bring themselves to vote for today's Democrat Party. Rural Revolution came across a list of 10 answers:

1. I voted Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.
2. I voted Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.
3. I voted Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
4. I voted Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
5. I voted Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq, I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.
6. I voted Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.
7. I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.
8. I voted Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.
9. I voted Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.
10. I voted Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

Okay, now it makes sense.

I am going to marry -------------- my house. I drilled a 1 inch round hole in the bedroom wall in preparation for my wedding night.

"I voted Democrat because I was outraged at Larry Craig and Mark Foley for doing things that are perfectly okay when Sam Adams, Gerry Studds, or Barney Frank does them."

"I voted Democrat because I was outraged that the Bush Administration used TORTURE, and didn't let Nancy Pelosi know about it... Oh ... okay they told her about it, but they didn't tell her they were really doing it... Oh... okay, so they told her they were doing it but at least she wasn't personally participating in ... oh..."

"I voted Democrat because I was outraged about Bush spent $600B on the Iraq War. I am thrilled that Obama is spending $1,200 Billion on Stimulus and pork."

VOTED DAMCRAT BECUASE I WANT BIGGER MORE INTRUSIVE GOVERMENT

I did a post like that last summer, after some Dems put out an obnoxiously smug, strawmen filled video: "I'm voting Republican because..."

We decided we could do it better, and did with 143 comments:

Summing up...

"I vote democrat because I am, and will always be, a moral adolescent"

Posted by: lvb-rocks at May 12, 2009 1:10 PM

Further summing up: your maturity certainly is plain to see here.

Anon:

Try, 'I know what you are, but what am I?' It more clearly communicates your thought.

Just keeping it all on the same level.

Losing what? The immaturity contest?

"I voted Democrat because I'm morally superior."

Posted by: Kevin R at May 12, 2009 2:43 PM

And I thought you Republicans are always saying we have no morals? Glad to hear I had that one wrong.

"I'm voting Democrat because blind hatred of Republicans trumps everything"

Anon:

The 'moral adolescent' comment was said absolutely clinically, no condescension meant. Ample clinical evidence, produced by self-described liberal researchers, suggests that the liberal mind is in a state of moral adolescence. The moral roots of the liberal and conservative minds are being examined with interesting results, showing there are primarily biological and secondarily environmental origins for one's moral and political leanings. It's a soft science, but still interesting.

Search for Jonathan Haidt (liberal psychologist) 'on the moral mind' for starters, at ted.com (video). I'm not big on psychology, preferring to get insights into human nature from the Catholic Church and its inimitable defender, GK Chesterton:

"He is a very shallow critic who cannot see an eternal rebel in the heart of a conservative"

"A strange fanaticism fills our time, the fanatical hatred of morality, especially Christian morality"

Posted by: lvb-rocks at May 12, 2009 11:00 PM

As you didn't make the comment yourself, your claim on the root of it rings fairly hollow, your "soft science" aside.

If you want to talk about hate, your labeling of an entire political party as moral degenerates sounds like a fair start on a hate campaign, and not a very new one at that ... you fit in well with your compatriots here.

As I've said over and over, I don't bother with hate. Its a waste of time, and disperses a person's energy. It accomplished nothing but the degradation of the hater's soul.

I don't entirely understand your response, but a couple of things might clarify my comments, and we'll leave it at that.

There is no connection between 'adolescence' and 'degenerates' that you are making. The research simply shows that, in the area of morals, the adult liberal mind has not grown out of its adolescent phase, keeping the same values most of us have during adolescence. It's not bad or degenerate, it's just immature (and that's not bad either, until you're trying to live and govern in an adult world). Growth out of this phase usually takes place in early adulthood, but the modern liberal mind tends to shun this growth, preferring to remain in a state of moral adolescence. That's what makes the research interesting, even though the science is 'soft' and relies on broad generalizations.

I agree with you on hate. Also, your mentioning the 'soul' cheers my soul. It shows that Catholic scholars like Aquinas and Chesterton might have at least some appeal to you. Give them a try. Two more from GKC:

"Men do not differ much about the things they call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable"

"Paganism declared that virtue was in a balance; Christianity declared it was in a conflict: the collision of the two passions apparently opposite"

I vote democrate because I enjoy the process and like to vote several times per election.

"It relies on broad generalizations," well, that much we can agree on. While you can try and patronize me and say its not meant as a tactic, that's exactly what it is. And while you try and distance it from the conservative view that liberals have no morals, I've heard it enough times to recognize it whether or not you put a skirt on it.

You are trying say I am underdeveloped morally -- just another attempt to invalidate a liberal viewpoint, which you neatly put a bow on at the end by inferring I'm pagan.

I'm fairly well read and am familiar with Aquinas and Chesterton although its been a while. The tenets of Christianity I have no argument with, I just don't care to run our country with religion.

"You ARE losing anon - just in case you didn't know..."

Hey Ted, he may be "losing" in your little pissing match on your forum that is frequented by about 10 posters, however, have you noticed recently that you guys are the ones losing in politics? Your party and your morals are confused. Less time bitching online and more time thinking about a positive and constructive future for the Republican party please.
