Village of Moonbats Enacts Recruiting Ban
The war in Iraq is pretty much won, but that doesn't stop moonbats from sticking it to the military any way they can. The hippies infesting Arcata, California have passed a measure making it illegal for military personnel to discuss the merits of service with anyone under 18:
The law was the inspiration of former Arcata City Councilman Dave Meserve, who gained national attention after his 2002 election by spearheading a first-in-the-nation law making compliance with the USA Patriot Act illegal.
The council followed up with repeated resolutions calling for Bush's impeachment and withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Meserve's failure to win re-election in 2006 is generally attributed to voter weariness of his sometimes divisive activism.
Not easily deterred, in late 2007, Meserve began thinking about ways to re-engage his town against the war. He hit on military recruiting, which he saw as a link between war overseas and everyday life at home, and he decided that instead of going to the same activists or to the council, he'd go to the ballot.
Me-serve — what a perfect name for a typically self-serving progressive parasite.
The senseless measure — which the federal government will have overturned in court — is credited to the town's "spirit of self-reliance and self-determination," as if American soldiers die defending the rest of the country, but not Arcata.
Nice try, moonbats, but as insults to the military go, you'll never top electing Barack Obama as Commander in Chief.

On a tip from Oiao.

From Wikipedia:
Arcata is notably progressive in its political makeup, and was the first city in the United States to elect a majority of its city council members from the Green Party, however it is currently made up of a Democratic majority. As a result of the progressive majority, Arcata capped the number of chain restaurants allowed in the city.[2] Arcata was the first city in the nation to pass a resolution in the spirit of nullifying the USA PATRIOT Act in the city.[3] The legality of the resolution has not yet been tested. Arcata was also the first municipality to ban the growth of any type of Genetically Modified Organism within city limits, with exceptions for research and educational purposes.[4]

As of the census of 2000, there were 16,651 people, 7,051 households, and 2,813 families residing in the city. As of 2002, there were 8,210 employed persons living in Arcata.
For many years the timber industry dominated Arcata's economy. Today, the majority of Arcata jobs come from government (including schools and Humboldt State University), the city's many owner-resident small businesses, some lumber and food manufacturing, and a wide variety of service industries (ranging from professional services to restaurant and hospitality).
A large but unmeasurable cannabis economy employs many in Arcata and the surrounding area. The area's economy and population are both growing more slowly than the State of California overall.
Median reported household income in Arcata was $22,315, and the median income for a family was $36,716. Males had a median income of $26,577 versus $24,358 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,531, however this figure may be artificially low due to the large student population. About 14.3% of families and 32.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.4% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.

>>Comment: I have lived in Humboldt County over the years, now on the East Coast, and hey, I really miss it. But it''s changed that is for sure. And no jobs is right, and unless your going hunting for mushrooms, well, do something creative, if you can figure something out, hemp products, make jewlry, something. The buildings have neen boarded up on the Eureka waterfront for years, and what are they going to do with those boarded up houses, and in FT. BRAGG, in Mendocino County. The cops are bad there, and it has been getting worse over the years. But the mountains, if your a hermit, great, lots og great food, but double taxes. Be Creful whereever you go, and find a gathering somewhere, coming up in the spring, good luck. I still miss Humboldt County.

He's Certainly show himself to be the biggest idiot ever elected. Thankfully they keep him making popularity tours with his teleprompters and herding the dumbest of the sheep. They keep him away from making decisions! Every time he stops and makes a decision it's either a gaff or total disaster! Anyone denying the fact he's an idiot just take a look at his VP and cabinet!! ;-)

Dave Meserve, as a former active duty commissioned officer in the U.S. Army who gladly served his country by defending its freedom and safety, I won't ask for your thanks or your gratitude.
I would ask that you think before you speak and before you act. The right to freedom of speech is a sacred and wonderful thing but you are using it to make you and your community look quite foolish.
But then, that is your right as an American citizen.

Hi conservative folks,
I'm Kevin Hoover, the liberal editor of the town newspaper, the Arcata Eye. www.arcataeye.com
Is there anything in particular you'd like to ask or tell me, either about this issue or Arcata in general?
Kevin
Posted by: Kevpod at April 27, 2009 3:23 PM
Well, Mr. Hoover, I admire your gumption. Is all this discussion about widespread and open drug use on the level? Some of these descriptions are not very flattering.
Posted by: Nancy at April 27, 2009 3:47 PM
Why yessir Mr. Hoover,
Could you please find out whether Mr. Meserve served in the military?
Or did someone else fight our wars for him?
Thank you
Peace

>>The war in Iraq is pretty much won...>>
I wish that were true. As long as there are neo-hippies and communists supporting the enemy with riots, propiganda, sabotage, assaults and political power-plays, the muslims will say that Americans are stupid cowards and will be encouraged to fight on.

"Is all this discussion about widespread and open drug use on the level? Some of these descriptions are not very flattering."
There is a lot of drug use, mostly cannabis. Unfortunately, our town has become something of a mecca for this.
But it's no longer the charming hippie-dippy wink-nudge toking, but rather what I think of as a cannabis cartel. Industrial-scale production, with doctors and lawyers and politicians in their pocket, the whole bit.
"Could you please find out whether Mr. Meserve served in the military?"
I don't believe Dave is a veteran. One thing you might want to know about Dave is that, while he is indeed a died-in-the-wool leftist, professionally he is a very well-regarded builder. He also assists the local Timber Heritage Association with rail restoration. So he's not some Trustafarian layabout, if that matters.
Next?

Sorry for the double posting...
Posted by: Kevpod at April 27, 2009 5:11 PM
Well Mr. Hoover, comments are dying out.
Let's see how this all shakes out now.
On one hand, there's Dave Meserve:
1) not a veteran, had other guys fight for him
2) spearheaded noncompliance with the patriot act
3) working to ban military recruitment
4) former city councilman
5) employed
6) socialist
meanwhile Arcata:
4) is a mecca for drug users
5) is a town with 7.2% unemployment in 2002
6) a per capita income of $15K (student weighted)
7) is a town with a severe homelessness problem
8) passed resolutions (2x) to impeach Bush
9) 32% under the poverty line
10) replacing a statue of McKinnley for one of BO
11) a nuclear weapons free zone
12) Democratic-controlled city council
13) Majority employed by state-government jobs
14) banned genetically-modified organisms
Oh yeah. You guys are doing a-okay with progressive guys like Dave Meserve.
Last question: Back to that genetic thing...any other problems with genes there in Arcata?
Just asking.
Posted by: Fiberal at April 27, 2009 6:57 PM
Is there anything in particular you'd like to ask or tell me, either about this issue or Arcata in general?
You bet. Does Arcata perceive any tension between banning military recruitment and yet benefiting from the protection of the military? Does Arcata feel any discomfiture that citizens of other cities contribute to Arcata’s security, while Arcata itself tries feebly to shirk its responsibilities in this regard? I assume that Arcata has a police force – if so, why? Do Arcata ban recruiting candidates for the police force? And last, but not least, do Arcatians feel any embarrassment for their puerile and sophomoric perspectives, or is that too much to hope for?

Arcata, just another parisite community on the backs of the tax paying workers in our society.
DHS and ICE should take a look there. But, then again, they would not want to piss off the voter base...............

Dear Kevin,
As a veteran of OIF, I have to say that my fellow Armed Forces personnel and myself would like to extend to Mr. Meserve a sincere "Thank You" for demonstrating to the "Nth" degree what can be achieved in this country due to our sacrifice.
By his actions, he has made for us all a glowing example of the lengths that can be reached by citizens through the power of a free vote.
We never tire of seeing the many wonderful aspects of American Culture and the possibilities that it imparts to its citizens.
May he have further success in all his endeavors, and I wish both him and his family the very best of luck.
Sincerely,

Thanks everyone. I'll try to plow through these questions.
"You bet. Does Arcata perceive any tension between banning military recruitment and yet benefiting from the protection of the military? Does Arcata feel any discomfiture that citizens of other cities contribute to Arcata’s security, while Arcata itself tries feebly to shirk its responsibilities in this regard?"
I can't speak for everyone, but I don't believe Arcata feels discomfiture over the Arcata Youth Protection act. After all, we approved it by a 73 percent majority.
Also:
All the new law attempts to do is stop recruiters from approaching kids under 17. Age 18 and up is same as ever.
Arcata has a number of active veterans' organizations – the American Legion, VFW and Veterans For Peace, all of which meet regularly and sponsor a number of community activities.
"I assume that Arcata has a police force – if so, why? Do Arcata ban recruiting candidates for the police force?"
We have a great police force. Definitely a cut above.
"And last, but not least, do Arcatians feel any embarrassment for their puerile and sophomoric perspectives, or is that too much to hope for?"
Some Arcatans are indeed embarrassed at the leftist initiatives.

"Arcata, just another parisite community on the backs of the tax paying workers in our society."
That's not accurate. Arcata has a relatively strong economy and a well-planned, diversified industrial base. Our City government has a balaced budget.

Arcata is mostly comprised of very hard-working people like yourself whose main concerns are maintaining their homes, raising their children and enjoying our community.
We also have a large student community and all the goofiness that comes with it, like any other college town.

"I have just one question: If you don't mind me asking, where do you personally stand on the issue of the recruiting ban?"
It's not a recruiting ban except on non-adults.
I support the Arcata Youth Protection Act. My reasons are:
1. 17-year-olds aren't equipped to make life judgments.
2. When I went into the Air Force, all kinds of false and inflated promises were made to me and my fellow Airmen. As I'm sure you know, military recruiters have cut all kinds of corners in hitting their numbers over the last few years.
3. I believe that military service ought to be presented along with a menu of other national service options. And not with glamorous, deceptive images that distort or glamorize the reality of military service.

"ARCATA is a real freaky place i heard that one earthday one of the city council jerks showed up dresses as a fish and riding a bicycle to prove how utterly stupid they are"
That sounds like the All-Species Parade, which occurs as part of the North Country Fair. And not on Earth Day, but in September.

"But they can get the morning after pill.Sounds like they can make life judgements to me. Try again."
Maybe all they can make is bad life judgments?
Posted by: Kevpod at April 28, 2009 10:49 AM
Maybe so Kev but that still contradicts the town's no recruiting of 17 year olds.
Posted by: Farmer Ted at April 28, 2009 11:11 AM
I'm sure that – like the data-miner person who crunched a bunch of Arcata stats above - you will be able to find lots of contradictions in our town, in liberal thought and just about anywhere else you want to.
If the implication is that the availability of morning-after drugs for teenagers undermines the rationale behind Meserve's initiative protecting 17-year-olds from recruiters, then I disagree.
Posted by: Kevpod at April 28, 2009 11:21 AM
So it's illegal for recruiters to discuss the military with 17 year olds. What laws do you have banning homosexuals from discussing homosexuality with them?
Posted by: Jay Guevara at April 28, 2009 11:36 AM
Kev you said yourself that 17 year old can't make rational decisions but you defend the right of a 17 year old girl to get the morning after pill. How do you feel about parental notification if an underage girl wants an abortion? That's the problem with liberals, they have no moral compass and no set values.
Posted by: Farmer Ted at April 28, 2009 11:53 AM
"What laws do you have banning homosexuals from discussing homosexuality with them?"
None of course. But if gays or anyone else came at sub-adults with an organized campaign of glitzy/misleading promises regarding career choices, my guess is that there'd be blowback. So to speak.
Posted by: Kevpod at April 28, 2009 11:56 AM
But if gays or anyone else came at sub-adults with an organized campaign of glitzy/misleading promises regarding career choices, my guess is that there'd be blowback. So to speak.
Define "organized." For my money, exposing school children to homosexuality (e.g., "Heather Has Two Mommies," "Lance and Bruce Go To a Leather Bar" /kidding) constitutes an organized campaign of glitzy/misleading promises regarding lifestyles choice. Yes? Or does Arcata prohibit all such activities too?

I'm not aware that Lance and Bruce's excellent leather bar adventure is part of the curriculum. Yet.
But I take your point. Maybe you're right in that books like that sell gayness as an attractive option. That's where parents, the school board and the community have to step in and make decisions as to what's appropriate for kids to see and experience.
And that is just what they did with the Youth Protection Act – attempt to prevent military recruiters from initiating contact with under-18 teens.
Posted by: Kevpod at April 28, 2009 1:11 PM
Ah, that's where we part company. You're comparing individual parents deciding what their children are exposed to, with municipal government deciding what everyone's children are exposed to.
That's a huge difference, isn't it?
By passing legislating limiting the access of military recruiters to the underage, but not that of homosexuals, aren't you inviting the conclusion that military service is reprehensible, but homosexuality is not?
Posted by: Jay Guevara at April 28, 2009 3:21 PM
"...municipal government deciding what everyone's children are exposed to. That's a huge difference, isn't it? By passing legislating limiting the access of military recruiters to the underage"
The Arcata City Council has, in the past, approved political initiatives without consulting the people (the infamnous Gulf War Sanctuary Resolution. They know better now, or should.
The legislation you refer to was, in this case, a vote of the citizens. The voters in nearby Eureka also approved the measure.
That doesn't make it right or even constitutional, but the point is that it wasn't a top-down gov't decision.
Moonbat nation has spoken.
