Sure, of course, there are always exceptions. I believe that what you say about your grandfather could be true. Some people smoke and don't end up with cancer.

But I could also tell you that some people have jumped off 10 story buildings and survived. Does that mean that jumping off 10 story buildings doesn't cause death? Maybe you should give it a try and prove us all wrong!

No, smoking is not healthy.
Yes, sometimes people who smoke, who get cancer, then can't pay their medical care. But wait, what about the illegal immigrants that run? or any one else that runs from their medical care?

You can't persecute a "vice". Eating (and over eating) is a vice. Unhealthy. So are we going to start overtaxing food. What about all the people who abuse medicine?

I take the point that you can't legislate everything. Sin the "sin taxes" as they're often called, are fairly straightforward, have been around for quite a while, and I can't see why they'd seem far-fetched even to righties like you guys.
