I hate that my-man Kool-Aid is getting all the flak for the Jonestown gig.
From what I've seen in my research, it is more likely that Flavor-Aid, not Kool-Aid, was consumed.

Genocide and Hitler's Inspiration

One can never go very far wrong overestimating the barbarity of the human species. Nor can one go far wrong in stating that all examples of genocide are repugnant but, it would seem, some are more repugnant than others.

Examples of genocidal attempts to systematically wipe out a race, nation or people have long stained the annals of human history, many instances now lost in the fog of time.

Most recent genocides have occurred in Africa, in Darfur in the present century where the Sudanese government and its surrogates are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of multi-ethnic, non-Arab Muslim civilians, and in Rwanda in 1994 where rampaging Hutus are believed to have massacred over 800,000 minority Tutsis over a period of a hundred days.

Whether the Bosnian Serb efforts at “ethnic cleansing” of the mid 1990’s technically “qualified” as true genocide has been the subject of much debate in the United Nations, which had unknowingly participated in the killing of many thousands and the rape of up to 50,000 Bosniak women and children.

Apparently, the U.N. is much more able to debate than it has the capacity to act in a beneficial fashion since much of the Rwanda horror was conducted while U.N. “peacekeepers” were in that country acting more as facilitators than peacekeepers. Apparently, too, when it comes to publicizing ethnic cleansing or genocide, it’s matters more whom you know than what you know.

That fact is evident from continuing reminders of the Jewish Holocaust more than six decades after its conclusion whereas, aside from show trials after the Bosnian War, relatively little is ever heard about the slaughters there, nor about the horrendous crimes and death tolls in Darfur or Rwanda.

Granted that the Holocaust is probably the single most devastating and sickening example of genocide in the history of the planet in terms of the sheer number of Jews murdered at the hands of Adolph Hitler and Karl Adolf Eichmann. And it should always be remembered, in the probably vain hope that remembrance will insure it “Never again” occurs.

However, if memory of the Holocaust is to be forever imprinted on the collective soul of humanity, should not other catastrophic events, massacres, mass killings, also be recalled?

Wikipedia cites the destruction of Carthage as the first example of a genocide as well as Genghis Khan’s reign of terror and mass murders committed in ancient times by Jews themselves against their foes. Post 1490, some 50 locales are mentioned as the scenes of mass genocidal and “gendercidal,” (males only), slaughters.

One shameful instance of genocide that, with all the emphasis on and reminders of the Holocaust, has been widely overlooked and swept under humanity’s rug, is the “forgotten holocaust,” the World War One murder of 1.5 million Aremenians by Ottoman Turks between 1915 and 1917: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-479143/The-forgotten-Holocaust-The-Armenian-massacre-inspired-Hitler.html. It’s misrepresented as “Europe’s First Holocaust” but it did provide inspiration for Adolph Hitler's Holocaust.

More in Part II to follow.

The elementary school next door (to the high school where I teach) is having an Easter egg hunt outside right now. Is that allowed? Easter is a Christian holiday. Oh, the horror!!

It's a gorgeous, sunny, spring day with a light breeze and there are lovely colorful eggs dotting the green grass. The kids are running around and laughing. What a great day.

Andrea, we don't have your global warming here. It's blizzarding, snow blowing exactly sideways. My daffodils shudder in the onslaught.
At Christmas, we had an elementary school who pasted up paper candles, stars, and ornaments in the windows. Oh the humanity!!!!!

Crit, you are correct, it was Flavr-Ade. Cheap knock-off.

Cannot believe the spin on BO's bow to the Saudi king. Its well established that liberals lie even with video evidence, but now a lot of what seems to pass for conservatives these days are also carrying water for BO by trying to pass off George Bush's acceptance of a medallion from the king as an equivalent "bow".

So if they're both standing and facing each other with a height differential, and Bush is going to be decorated (and here there may be some proper criticism) by a comparatively short little king, just how does he receive the necklace without bending? Pick the king up so he can drop it around his neck? Start hollering for some lacky to bring a chair for the king to stand on?

It all equals out because every president bows down to a foreign king now and then, right? No way.
Fact is, Bush bent out of necessity if not protocol, and BO disgraced his country by gratuitously bowing down showing humility to a foreign leader and despot in front of the entire world.

Michelle O mocked by British fashionables

I know, you're fed up with reading about Michelle Obama. But let me just tempt you towards one last, tiny detail: the First Lady's falsies. Michelle Obama is normally so natural looking, it's surprising to find something about her that is so unapologetically fake.

Those eyelashes weren't even trying to look real.

No, they were full-on, all-out diva lashes, the kind you normally find on D-list celebrities or in drag-act dressing rooms. The allure of the long lash is well-documented. They define and sexualise the gaze, making the eyes appear bigger (and therefore younger). Gazing up at someone through luscious lashes is considered an act of seduction; it's even entered the vernacular: “you batted your eyelashes at him”.

Given that Mrs Obama's intention was to seduce Europe, she chose those lashes well, making no attempt to conceal the artifice.

Obama voter soldiers ushered to front to meet Obama in Iraq

Got this email from a sergeant who was there.

“We were pre-screened, asked by officials “Who voted for Obama?”, and then those who raised their hands were shuffled to the front of the receiving line. They even handed out digital cameras and asked them to hold them up.”

Take a look at the picture at AP and notice all the cameras are the same models? Coincidence? I think not.

Obama's climate czar shows his enviro-insanity

The president’s new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth’s air.

John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun’s rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

Phoenix Police Stomp on Free Speech

The Arizona Republic reports that the police in Phoenix, Arizona are attempting to retaliate against a local blogger who regularly exposes their corruption and incompetence.

The Republic article reports “Police officers accused of drunken driving. A female officer’s alleged promiscuity and infidelity. A commander whose critics labeled his son a child molester. Jeff Pataky said he uses negative complaints and anonymous tips to fuel his blogging crusade against Phoenix police. A headline on his Web site suggests rewards would be provided for dirt on police indiscretions. Pataky, a former software sales and marketing executive who now focuses his energy shoveling content on www.badphoenixcops.com, believes his online criticism of the department - along with past criticisms of police investigations - led officers to serve a search warrant at his home last week.”

SNIP

“Investigators confiscated computer material and other items from Pataky’s north Phoenix home, which he considered a threat to make him quit writing. ‘We have heard internally from our police sources that they purposefully did this to stop me,’ Pataky said. ‘They took my cable modem and wireless router. Anyone worth their salt knows nothing is stored in the cable modem.’ ..Phoenix Assistant Chief Andy Anderson said the harassment case is unique because of the connection to an unaccredited grassroots Web site. He said the blog is one part of the case, though he did not provide specifics of the ongoing investigation. ‘This isn’t about the blog,’ Anderson said. ‘That’s just where the investigation led.’ Police also served a separate search warrant at the home of former homicide Detective David Barnes, one of the investigators on the Baseline Rapist case. Barnes was demoted from the homicide unit to patrol after he went public one year ago with claims of mismanaged evidence at the city’s crime lab.”

Obama Chia-Head Outrage!

Fox News in Tampa reports:

“Some local Walgreen’s stores are pulling a supposed likeness of President Barack Obama off their shelves. The Chia Obama will no longer be sold there. Walgreen’s spokesman Michael Polzin explained to FOX 13 that local store managers have the ability to purchase and market products — like the Chia Obama — on their own. But now, the corporate office has asked stores to pull the product from their stores because, he said, it is not appropriate for the company’s corporate image. The Chia Obama is a version of the Chia Pet line, which features a ceramic figure upon which fresh greens are planted and allowed to grow, filling out the likeness of the subject.”

Oh, and here's more sewage caught in the spin cycle:

The White House is denying that the president bowed to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at a G-20 meeting in London, a scene that drew criticism on the right and praise from some Arab outlets.

"It wasn't a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he's taller than King Abdullah," said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

So what's the next Liberal/semi-conservative/RINO/MSM strategy to explain away this disgracful supplication?
Maybe: "Uh...we don't give this information out much, but in fact BO has implemented a new policy to immediately start giving quickie manicures to all the foreign dignitaries he meets."

It comes down to what to believe? Liberal propaganda or your lying eyes?

The left dumbs down the definition of torture again. Loud music, sleep deprivation, air conditioning, and now solitary confinement are all considered torture.

Leftists determined to remake the mistakes of the sixties and seventies are looking for new ways to coddle the most violent, despicable prisoners in our society.

Detroit to close 23 schools

Detroit — Detroit Public Schools’ emergency financial manager on Wednesday said he plans to send layoff notices to 600 teachers and close Chadsey High School, Guyton Elementary and 21 other schools in the fall because of plummeting enrollment and a mounting deficit.

Robert Bobb, the manager, also announced plans to plow more than $200 million into existing buildings by enhancing security and making structural and other improvements.

Bobb said the closings and layoffs are necessary to stave off a $306 million deficit, but parents are already distraught over the changes, which will force the transfer of 7,500 students.

Meet the Most Courageous Man in Britain: a Pakistani*

To the surprise of many, Dr. Michael Nazir-Ali, the (Anglican) Bishop of Rochester, England, has announced that he will retire next September. The 59-year old Bishop says that he is resigning so that he can work “for endangered or beleaguered Christian minorities both abroad and in the UK.”

Bishop Michael and his family live under constant police protection following death threats made in January 2008 after the Bishop had warned that there are several ‘no-go areas’ across Britain where non-Muslims live in danger. His assertion was dismissed, both explicitly by politicians (including Conservatives) who denied the existence of no-go areas because they have “never seen any,” and implicitly by clerics from his own church who declared that the introduction of Sharia law in Britain is “unavoidable” in order to “maintain social cohesion.”
