California County Declares Anarchy

Even as government metastasizes at an unprecedented rate, devouring ever more wealth and running up debts that will crush the economy, bureaucrats find they can't afford to perform the basic functions that justify their regrettable existence. From California, the croaking canary in the coalmine of Big Government moonbattery:

Misdemeanors such as assaults, thefts and burglaries will no longer be prosecuted in Contra Costa County because of budget cuts, the county's top prosecutor said Tuesday.
District Attorney Robert Kochly also said that beginning May 4, his office will no longer prosecute felony drug cases involving smaller amounts of narcotics. … People who are suspected of misdemeanor drug crimes, break minor traffic laws, shoplift, trespass or commit misdemeanor vandalism will also be in the clear. Those crimes won't be prosecuted, either.

Yet the government is gobbling our money in massive quantities. On top of its cut of the federal "stimulus" loot, California charges as much as 10.25% in state and local sales tax. Where does it all go?

The answer is nowhere. Big Government is a black hole. The more wealth it seizes, the faster that wealth ceases to exist.

guess where all the felons will go when CA releases them early due to funding cuts???

it'll get much worse once gavin free-for-all newsom runs for and wins governorship.

Outstanding, an 'Anarchist Homeland' for disaffected college student 'anarchists'. Go west young man, and if you survive, you will surely grow up.

It's become painfully and patently obvious that the "Progressive" idea of what government is for isn't even remotely sustainable.

Posted by: Kevin R at April 22, 2009 12:06 PM

Actually this may be an interesting thing to watch as far as a population behavior without government services.

I predict at least two things:

1. Weapon sales go up.
2. Crimes such as assault and burglary go down.

Posted by: IOpian at April 22, 2009 12:13 PM

I hope you're right, IOpian. Personally, I think drug laws and enforcement are a waste of time and money.

The assault and robbery going unenforced, on the other hand, is very not cool. But I think the bigger issue here is that this is a publicity stunt to get more funding. I doubt any of this stuff will be unenforced for long.

Isn't this pretty much the opposite of Giuliani's "Broken Windows" campaign that actually cleaned up NYC years ago?

Oh, stupid me, there it is: Giuliani is a Republican and we must do the opposite to appease our dogma.

Not quite - they did say they'd continue to prosecute firearms offenses.

Apparently theft isn't important enough to prosecute - but defending yourself is.

Aren't they doing the same thing in much of England? My sense is, it's not working out so well for them. Something about the whole country being overrun by thugs and petty thieves. A predictable outcome. Law enforcement exists for a reason.

Posted by: mega at April 22, 2009 2:58 PM

There are actually countries where they do not collect taxes. One actually PAYS it's citizens and one has NO GOVERNMENT interference - you can own guns with no regulations at all.

Why can't we do that?

Posted by: Anonymous at April 22, 2009 2:59 PM

okay, I always like a good riddle.

UAE and Somalia?

lol

Posted by: mega at April 22, 2009 4:32 PM

It was nice of the District Attorney to announce which crimes won't be prosecuted. Now the criminals know exactly what they can get away with.

"Civilian w/ the biggest gun, wins!"

"Civilian w/ the fastest gun, wins!"

"Civilian w/ booby trapped front yard, pressure and light sensative alarms & caged windows, wins!"

*sigh*

I really don't wanna have to plant a garden and build a bunker....

This has happened in several counties in Oregon in the past. Sometimes it's a "scare tactic" by a county to drum up more funding. Other times, they really do put misdemeanors and drug possession cases on the back burner until they can get more funding. Then they settle out the cases for a nickel on the dollar, as it were, once they can process the backlog of files.

But Rob Banks at April 22, 2009 2:38 PM beat me to it.

The one absolute thing they will jump all over is law abiding citizens defending themselves with legally owned firearms. Count on it.

The last thing the CA state gov't will allow is a situation where legal firearm ownership actually is proven to create a safer environment. Count on that too.

As far as home invasion, the home owner has a 50% chance of not being charged, but a 100% chance of loosing everything in the soon to follow civil lawsuit that the leftie Judges and Juries will support, and award for the 'victum'. You know, the victum that invaded the home and was shot by the mean home owner.

Additioinally, Contra Casta and other bay area counties Sherriff Departmens are the worse (even worse than LA) for granting carry permits.

So, if you use a firearm to defend yourself away from your home, you will more than likely be charged.

I do agree that home invasion deaths will go up for both invaders and home occupants before it gets better.

Californians defending their property will be fine so long as they follow the 3-S rule.

Shoot.
Shovel.
Shut up.

"California charges as much as 10.25% in state and local sales tax. Where does it all go?"

And our leaders tell us the state has a revenue problem, not a spending problem.

Well, to save a few bucks and be green, I recommend shutting the AC off in all state office buildings this summer. Mother Gaia will appreciate it.

Uh not quit true we know exactly where it will go the same place it has always gone, patronage jobs and vanity projects like sports stadiums for multi-billion dollar sports team corporations. When I lived in San Diego the city government decided they would rather build a new baseball stadium than a public library and they also laid off police disgusting.

Posted by: Oldcrow at April 22, 2009 9:20 PM

When the government stops enforcing the laws, then the laws cease to have meaning.

That's bad. That's really, really bad. If the government can't be counted on to deal with criminals, it's asking for someone else to step up to the plate.

The citizens will realy need their guns

Posted by: SPURWING PLOVER at April 23, 2009 7:54 AM

My kid wanted a town without police. He thought it would be "cool'. I splained him he wasnt bad enough to survive as the other folks who wanted no police really were bad. he "got it" one day on the playground when an administrator saved his squrrily butt.
Shoot your way outta town and watch the experiment. FAIL

Illegal Immigration, they refuse to enforce the laws, advertize for MORE, giver them better benefits than their citizens than they ask for a bailout.

Posted by: TED at April 23, 2009 12:19 PM

The day your DA admits that he/she will NOT enforce ALL of the LAWS that you pay TAXES FOR, is the day he/she is immediately UNEMPLOYED!

I don't understand where these public servants get the idea that no matter what that they are UN-Terminatable until their term is up. Nothing could be further from the truth! Once you cannot perform the duties of your office, you are no longer a 'qualified' participant of that office and therefore are to be REMOVED from that said OFFICE!
There is NO LAW that states that the TAXPAYERS MUST pay taxes for a said service to an OFFICE of PUBLIC TRUST that is NOT DELIVERING that SAID SERVICE!

There isn't a black hole. It's a red hole - the red states. Sucking the country dry.
