Pop Star John Mellencamp Blames Reagan for Lousiness of Pop Music

Drab corporate pop excreter and esteemed foreign policy theorist John Cougar Mellencamp is now a social economist, having figured out why his industry has produced nothing but garbage for decades: it's Reagan's fault. From a rant quoted at NewsBusters:

Reagan's much-vaunted trickle-down theory said that wealth tricked down [sic] to the masses from the elite at the top. Now we've found out that this is patently untrue — the current economic collapse reflects this self-serving folly. The same holds for music. It doesn't trickle down; it percolates up from the artists, from word of mouth, from the streets and rises up to the general populace. Constrained by the workings of SoundScan/BDS [Broadcast Data Systems], music now came from the top and was rammed down people's throats.…
Sadly, these days, it's really a matter of "every man for himself." In terms of possibilities, we are but an echo of what we once were. Of course, the artist does not want to "sell out to The Man." Left with no real choice except that business model of greed and the bean counting mentality that Reagan propagated and the country embraced, there is only "The Man" to deal with. There is no street for the music to rise up from. There is no time for the music to develop in a natural way that we can all embrace when it ripens and matures. That's why the general public doesn't really care. It's not that the people don't still love music; of course they do. It's just the way it is presented to them that ignores their humanity.

Presumably now that we've replaced trickle-down wealth with trickle-up poverty, music execs will go back to caring nothing for profits, wanting only to nurture our humanity. It will be nice to have something more interesting to listen to than Menstrualcramp, a vapid commercial hack whose career peeked during the Reagan era he decries.

Apparently Mellonhead has never heard of the Internet, which allows young musicians to go over the heads of record companies and straight to potential fans. He's still back in the 80s, grousing about those new-fangled CDs:

The CD, it should be noted, was born out of greed. It was devised to prop up record sales on the expectation of people replenishing their record collections with CDs of albums they had already purchased. They used to call this "planned obsolesce" [sic] in the car business. Sound quality was supposed to be one of the big selling points for CDs but, as we know, it wasn't very good at all. It was just another con, a get-rich-quick scheme, a monumental hoax perpetrated on the music consuming public.

Curse those greedy capitalists for always coming up with new and better technology, even when aging mediocrities like Mellencan't fail to produce new music worth hearing.

I live 7 miles from Mellonlame and he has a huge mansion on the lake that sits behind a large gate. Apparently capitalism has been good to him.

Him and his wife fit right in with the Moonbats in Bloomington, Indiana.

al gore, and his wife tipper, have more to do with the decline of music then anyone else.

Posted by: furballz at March 24, 2009 7:57 AM

Look what his pop culture has done to the brain of JOHN MELLONCHUMP its shrunk its brains to walnut sized perhaps even smaller

Posted by: SPURWING PLOVER at March 24, 2009 7:59 AM

Yes I feel really sorry for Johnny. They had to cancel his show here last year because it only sold like 900 tickets. No one wants to here is whinning about the country and how bad it is when he has made lots of money himself.

Furballz,
Could you mean the PMRC? :)

Posted by: Farmer Ted at March 24, 2009 8:03 AM

Yes and Al Gore sits on the board at Apple who is selling millions in music downloads.

Posted by: Bob at March 24, 2009 8:04 AM

Ever hear the intro to Wasp's "Harder Faster" the live version? Blacky Lawless lays into tipper and the rest of the gang. Funny stuff.

Posted by: Farmer Ted at March 24, 2009 8:15 AM

This industry has been going downhill for a long time now. I used to be big fan of stuff, always looking out for someone new. I lost interest, cause
1) I couldn't reconcile my politics with theirs, they inspired so much loathing in me (e.g. Pearl Jam).
2) You'd buy an album based on one song you loved, and the rest of it would be sloppy and suck. I got tired of being duped.
3) Everything turned to rap.
4) I simply can't stand hypocrisy, and that's all you see from these very materialistic wealthy fatcats who curse capitalism and free markets (Rage).

Aaaah... Who does Mellencamp think he is kidding?
Does he really think cassette tapes or vinyl provide better sound quality than CDs or digital?
I DJ for a hobby and I can tell you that the only thing going for vinyl is nostalgia and the feeling of exclusivity, its sound quality has nothing on CDs.

We can only hope that the American people will reject political guidance from the nation's entertainers.

Posted by: J at March 24, 2009 8:39 AM

Hey, maybe it is because the product they are producing stinks and no one wants to listen to crap and politics on a CD.

Movies and TV ratings are down too. As I have said, no one wants to read, see, or listen to Liberalism all time, not even Liberals.

He's full of shit, there's plenty of good, new music out there. In fact, with the internet, a lot more musicians have an avenue to get their music into the mainstream than ever before. Not all of it's good but a lot of it is impressive considering it was produced on a laptop.
Musical tastes are varied- sometimes simple is what's required, but I can't ever remember Johnny 'Cougar' banging out more than three chords in that 'Lear To Play Guitar, by Roy Clark" rhythm pattern that he can't seem to break out of. He should go to the Tasty Freeze, grab a chilli dog, and listen Dianne's Metallica 'Master Of Puppets' 8 track.

Yeah, if only there were someplace where you could upload video of yourself and your music so that people could hear it and generate word of mouth interest without dealing with “The Man.” We could call it “MeTube.” Nah, that’s not that good. How about “WeTube?” Nope. “TheyTube?” Doesn’t make it. Must think...must think....

OMB what about ...and Justice for all?

Posted by: Farmer Ted at March 24, 2009 9:15 AM

Maybe John Cougar Mellonballs will be asking Obama for a bailout next.

Hear hear, furrballz. Tipper has done so much to try and kill the music industry.
Jello Biafra (Dickhead though he is at times) on one of his spoken- word albums made some interesting observations on a time he crashed the 2000 Democratic Convention. He pointed out that when Tipper came on stage, amid the applause, the audience was chanting "TIPPER ROCKS! TIPPER ROCKS!", and an "Applause" sign above the stage was also flashing that phrase.
When talking about this, Biafra abruptly said, "News flash, people: Tipper DOESN'T rock! In fact, she is very ANTI- rock!"
In that picture, Mellencamp looks like he's ripping a fart.
It always kills me when musicians like him criticize the economic system which helped to make him a millionaire.

As far as I'm concerned, Mellencamp was never an "artist" in the first place.

(I know what you mean about Pearl Jam, I'm trying to decide who is more sickening and self-righteous -- Bono or Eddie Vedder).

Posted by: mst at March 24, 2009 12:12 PM

Bono, easily.

I am a 60's person when it comes to music, bring in the 70's, the 80's and then bring in the hip hop chit..There is where 'rockers" need to express and blame the producers and promoters not a presidnet. Has Al Gore helped or hurt? If you think that he hurt it, how can you say that Ronnie Raygun is at fault

Holy crap.... Kyle hasn't posted yet?

Posted by: Anonymous at March 24, 2009 3:29 PM

You mean the same pop culture that cranks out rap songs like COP KILLER from the infamous ICE-T or that LUDICRIS guy who sings about murdering old ladies of that leftists black group who put a CD who front showed the WORLD TRADE CENTER exploding while the bands leader is pressing a button of a detonator

Posted by: Flu-Bird at March 24, 2009 7:12 PM

It really is astounding that an artist who had his peak of popularity and made his fortune during the Reagan year would decry trickle down economics.

When this rich white male booked concerts, did he not pay a roadie crew? Did his shows not bring in revenue to the venues he played at, and their empoyees in turn? Does he not pay a mechanic to maintain all of his automobiles? Does he not pay gardners and maintenance crews to maintain his mansion? Did not record and department stores pay employees with part of the revenue gained from his sold albums?

To hear a grown adult rich millionaire like this try to pretend to speak from a place of blue collar destitution is deeply embarassing.

Posted by: J at March 24, 2009 7:54 PM

J, you're right... but I fear the Left will never be able to admit that trickle down economics works. I just gave up an argument with a European socialist who insists that our method of thinking is both barbaric and impractical. He believes whole-heartedly that the only way the world can ever work properly is if everyone works for the collective and everyone is paid the same wages no matter how much they work or if they choose to not work at all. Sad to see our world going to hell, huh?

Posted by: Anonymous at March 24, 2009 8:13 PM

I used to be a fan of John Mellencamp, Many years ago. Been to several of his concerts, Bought all his cds.

Then he started in with his lefty pacifist rants, And so I decided to stop listening to and buying his music.

He's become a hypocrite in my view, he lives and enjoys the freedoms of this country, Fought for by our soldiers. Yet has he done even one USO show ? ever ?

The reason most music has went downhill is because of douchebags like Mellencamp, They've let their pit bull mouths overload their humming bird asses.

Yes!

I used to love "System", but after listening to the lyrics, and a trip or two to Iraq, I discovered a sense of disgust in myself.

Great music, but I could do without the insulting lyrics that portrayed me as a dupe (B.Y.O.B.).

Plus, they too are quite rich and living in CA. They even wrote an album about how much LA sucks (Toxicity).

Nice, hunh?

Posted by: Evil Monk at March 24, 2009 10:38 PM

Wow, he is insanely stupid. How can someone make it to his age without ever having a clue? Liberalism is all about guilt, and his must stem from still being quasi-famous despite having done nothing of worth since the 80's, which was a very kind decade to this jackass financially. Wonder why that is?

Posted by: Smoke TNT at March 24, 2009 10:45 PM

It could be that since Mellencamp is washed up, he thinks music as a whole is washed up.

In regards to him complaining about CDs, what does this mental midget want to do? Go back to 8 tracks? If this were the 1960s, he would be lamenting the loss of the 78 record. It is by far an improved product. Smaller, easy to store, with far better sound quality. You dont pop a LP in your car stereo John! Back in the 1980s, when this phony populist got filthy rich, he actually made some great music. Now he is a step away from the carnival circut. He will soon be playing the 4th of July festival in my town of 2700 people if he doesn't start selling some records. See you then, has been.

Posted by: Kurt at March 25, 2009 1:11 PM

cowlove, at least bono mostly walks the walk. Yes he does stupid rock star stuff, but when he was in Africa with POTUS GW Bush he said nothing but good things.
All I can say about Mellencamp is at least the cripple goes out and works for a living (he, like me has Spina bifida). Instead of getting a Government check.
