El Salvador's Barack Obama

Maybe it's just as well Ronaldus Maximus didn't live to see what the world is rotting into. Remember how he stood up to the moonbats in Congress to defend El Salvador from communism? The Marxist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) is now poised to take over the country democratically, just as its ideological brethren took over the USA. Its candidate for president is Mauricio Funes, who is marketing himself as El Salvador's Barack Obama, even borrowing the "Yes we can" slogan that Chairman Zero in turn borrowed from militant illegal aliens.

Like Obama, Funes's qualifications consist of immersion in leftist ideology rather than executive experience. He was a correspondent for CNN en Espanol.

This and Venezuela will underscore the difference between America and the rest of the world better than anything else. America is robust and prosperous enough to recover from Obama's socialist tendencies. Backwaters like El Salvador and Venezuela are swiftly brought to their knees by those same policies. Indonesia was the same way, and may take decades to recover, if it ever does. Even America may take years to recover from the spending binge our "fearless leaders" have gone on. The other important thing to remember is that the American political and economic systems not only make recovery possible, they even make it likely! We all said it, over and over again during that interminable campaign: before you embrace change, make sure you understand what kind of change you are embracing. They shouted us down, saying that "anything will be better than W." Well, leftists and your media water carriers, how do you like the "anything" you voted for so far?

Yeah, yeah, "give him a chance." "It's only been 6 weeks." (Christ, is that all? This will be a long, LONG four years). You don't need to be a genius or a fortune teller to see that Obama's policies will have dire consequences down the road, which is ironic in that it is short-term thinking that got our financial institutions into this mess, and likewise the American taxpayer via bailout and "stimulus" spending. Tax and spend: more of the same. Clinton-era cabinet members: more of the same. Corruption and waste: more of the same. So where is the change we were promised? Try the nationalizing of banks, the auto industry (THERE'S a dead horse if I've ever seen one), and the first shot at health care. Even if we manage to stem the tide and re-privatize these things, we'll be on the financial hook for YEARS, if not for generations. And yet people keep voting Democrat, out of habit if nothing else, and they keep sending the same criminals, slime, and filth back to Washington time after time.

The Republicans are better about this, but not so much as you'd notice, given their tendency to just go along with whatever idiocy the majority puts forth. It makes me feel bad for the few decent people we do send to Washington (my Rep is Jim Sensenbrenner, one of the aforementioned good guys), who try their best to do the responsible thing in the face of horrible odds. I maintain my faith in conservative principles, and in the American people as a whole, though I confess in the last two years that faith has been tried like never before. Call it the triumph of hope over experience; I take the continued success of American Idol as a sign that I may as well be talking to the cat.

As an ex-pat resident of El Salvador with family involved in local politics my response to this is "whoa, partner, slow down there." Yes, Funes is very much trying to ride the wave of Obamaism to the Presidency of El Salvador. And, unfortunately, the FMLN has not mellowed since the civil war - the Bachelet-Lula socialists have left or been driven out of the party. The VP is a Communist who has admitted, in his recent autobiography, to killing 1,000 people. But the polls show a narrowing of the gap between the FMLN and ARENA such that now ARENA has the edge, although within the range of a statistical tie. My family, which, as I say, is involved very deeply in party politics, is certain that ARENA will win the election, just as they recently won the mayor-ship of San Salvador which had been held by the FMLN for 15 years. Of course, don't hold me to this prediction. Elections are, by there nature, subject to surprise results. But, we are [fingers crossed] expecting a favorable result.
