Confessions of a Heartless American
I’ve been called many things over my many years, a few good things, some not so good things, mostly average things, but never heartless. Still, I have to conclude that I am heartless. I’ve determined that I must be since I don’t feel sorry for subprime mortagees who may lose their homes or who may already have been dispossessed.
In my defense and to mitigate my heartlessness, I should add that I do sincerely and deeply empathize with the children of those people. Kids don’t understand such things as “foreclosures” and other multisyllabic words associated with the adult world. All they understand is that they are being uprooted from the place they’ve called home perhaps for their entire short lives and that they have to move to a different place, to different schools, to different neighborhoods where they will encounter strangers and be forced to make new friends and to acclimate to new environs.
All that is very difficult for youngsters and for those kids I have a great deal of sympathy because it’s all none of their doing or responsibility. For their parents, however, I have little empathy.
Before I am cast out from the society of human fellowship and tossed into the sewer of reprobate misanthropes, do hear me out.
This attack of heartlessness came on with a rush tonight as I watched on local news a horde of demonstrators armed with signs proudly declaring their status as subprime mortgage holders who were incensed. They were loudly picketing in front of homes of some CEO’s who were in some way associated with the effort to deny them the right to remain in their domiciles merely because they were unable to make their monthly payments to their mortgage holders.
I should add at this point that I have no sympathy with banks and mortgage companies, either. Many have operated immorally and unethically in granting home loans to individuals who they were fully aware could not afford them. Maybe they could pay the monthly nut during good times but when bad times struck they would be stuck. And bad times, as they inevitably do, have arrived with a vengeance.
Other institutions granted those loans under threats of being accused of discriminatory practices by the federal and local governments. Those, also, deserve condemnation for their corporate pusillanimity.
Some few resisted such governmental strong-arming, and those I would applaud, but they are relative rarities.
Which brings us to the question of precisely what “subprime mortages” and “subprime lending” actually mean. Terms of fairly recent vintage, USA Today defined the meaning: “Subprime lending — higher-interest loans to consumers with impaired or non-existent credit histories — has been the fastest-growing part of the mortgage industry.
Subprime mortgage activity grew an average 25% a year from 1994 to 2003, outpacing the rate of growth for prime mortgages.” http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/housing/2004-12-07-subprime-day-2-usat_x.htm
The operative words there are “higher interest” and “impaired or non-existent credit histories,” ...

“Oh, no, my lucky son,
We’re living now on Easy Street,
With dough from Washington.
“We’ve left it up to Uncle Sam;
Now don’t get exercised.
Nobody has to give a damn,
We’ve all been subsidized!”
“But if Sam treats us all so well,
And feeds us milk and honey,
Please tell me, Daddy, where oh where,
He’s going to get the money?”
“Don’t worry son, there ain’t no hitch
To this here noble plan.
He simply soaks the filthy rich,
And helps the common man.”
“But Daddy, won’t there come a time,
If we take all their cash,
When they’ll be left without a dime,
And things will all go smash?”
“My faith in you is shrinking, son,
You nosy little brat!
You do too damn much thinking, son,
To be a Democrat!”

This we do not need - *Guns?* - "But too many lose sight of the fact that the Heller decision was a 5-4 decision. Four justices - only one short of a majority - adopted the liberal argument that the Second Amendment does not involve any rights whatsoever for private citizens. The Second Amendment was only a single vote away from being eradicated from the Constitution." Where has Mr. Blackwell been since, oh, a couple of hours after the decision? Is he unaware (barely acceptable) or is it something else? ALL NINE JUSTICES EXPLICITLY STATED THAT THE AMENDMENT DECLARED AN INDIVIDUAL RIGHT! Three thought that while it might be unConstitutional the case should go back to a lower court for more work, while one claimed that the "regulations" were not a "ban" and so were not in violation of the Constitution.

Now, now, Whoopie... no sense to stoop to the level of a Brit Leftist. They clearly are suffering from the worst kind of envy. They keep forgetting that it was our "arrogant, stupid greed" that allowed us to pay the lion's share of their defense bill for 50 years (after rebuilding their capital, along with large swaths of continental Europe).
When they start whining about "arrogant, stupid greed", take pity on the poor subjects of what was once an Empire. An actual Empire lost because they actually were greedy and arrogant, actually did try to steal everything from other countries, including their oil.
Soon the Brits will learn the folly of trying to appease the Beast of Islam, and thinking that socialism leads to anything other than ruin, no matter how good the intentions of those that espouse either.
Remember the famous quote? Everyone leaves off the last part, though...
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the blood of the innocent"

Anyone Check Gov. Sibelius' Tax Returns?
Rumors are afoot that 2-term Democratic Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius is on the short list to replace tax cheat Tom Daschle as Secretary of Health and Human Services: http://news.aol.com/main/obama-presidency/article/sebelius-health-and-human-services/332995?icid=200100397×1218695187x1201247115.
Sibelius was said to have been on Obama’s short list for VP but came up short that time since Obama wanted a brilliant, discreet, well-spoken guy for that spot, although he settled for Joe Biden. The governor was also an also-ran in 2004 when John Kerry wanted a brilliant, discreet, and well-spoken guy as his running mate but picked John Edwards instead.
Sibelius seems to fit the president’s needs and social policies at HHS:
ABORTION: (Obama Grade: A+) A Catholic, she was endorsed by Planned Parenthood, vetoed legislation which would have restricted abortion in Kansas four times, and last year vetoed a bill that would have restricted late term abortions. Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Nauman asked that she not continue to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion because of her failure to protect pre-born human beings.
EDUCATION: (Obama Grade: A-) After the state was ordered by the Kansas Supreme Court to increase funding for education, Sibelius raised taxes on income, property, and sales, resulting in 3-year, one billion dollar increase in moneys for K-12 schools but failed to show how she would pay for the hike in two of those years.
ENVIRONMENT: (Obama Grade: A) The governor advocated more recycling and thrice vetoed, (she really enjoys her veto pen), coal-fired power plants and, instead of cheap and plentiful coal, pushed for a greater dependence on unproven wind energy technology and other non-polluting, and unreliable, energy sources.
GUNS: (Obama Grade: B-) With lots of hunters and sports shooters in Kansas, Sibelius supports the Second Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms but twice vetoed, (again), “concealed carry” bills. Her veto was overridden the second time.
SAME SEX MARRIAGE (Obama Grade: B) She refused to support an amendment to the Kansas constitution that would have prohibited same sex marriages, saying current laws in place made it unnnecessary. Seventy percent of Kansans disagreed with the governor and the amendment is now part of the constitution.
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT: (Obama Grade: A) Sibelius opposes capital punishment and the Kansas Supreme Court agreed with her and declared it unconstitutional. That decision was overruled by SCOTUS and capital punishment laws remain on the Kansas books.
All in all, things look pretty good for the governor’s chances of dumping Kansas for D.C., although no word yet on whether she fulfills Obama’s requisite of cheating on her taxes or employing illegal aliens or being caught up in New Mexican type corruption.
(Much of the above information on Governor Sibelius, sans commentary, is based on a Wikipedia article)

With all the controversy over Obama’s devious stimulus/porkulous, why get bogged down in another controversy over the national census. Who cares?
Well, anyone in his right mind should care!
First of all, it is mandated in our Constitution that once a decade there should be a headcount to determine just how many people are residing in the United States since it’s rather important to know. The actual constitutional language reads, “Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.” In compliance thereof, every ten years since 1790 said count has been tallied.
(For those keeping a population score, and someone should so inform Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as of February 10th, 2009, some 305,785,763 bodies and souls reside and live on our shores, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That number represents a semi-educated guess, an estimate, based on projections since the next national census isn’t due until 2010. It may in fact be a wild estimate due to the nation’s apparent lack of interest in how many illegal aliens have moved in.)
Secondly, for almost 220 years now, that census has been taken some 21 times by our government but by a semi-autonomous arm of our government. The U.S. Census Bureau, an agency of the the Department of Commerce, has been tasked with that responsibility since 1903.
Third, the “decennial census,” a term adopted by the government has, like all things governmental, ballooned in its scope. Rather than a mere headcount comparable to counting how many people board a plane, the Census Bureau is now charged with such disparate responsibilities such as determining data on which to base allocation of about $300 billion for state and local public initiatives–and boondoggles.
Three hundred billion dollars is a relative pittance nowadays in a multi-trillion dollar federal budget but it’s not chump change either.
Finally, and as Hamlet observed, “Ay, there’s the rub.” That justifiably-disturbed Dane was contemplating ethical obstacles to his offing himself in his consternation over family problems. America’s “rub,” hopefully, isn’t suicidal but the Barack Obama/Rahm Emanuel conspiracy does border on homicidal. . .

Mayor of Berywn Heights Home 'Mistakenly' Raided By Law Enforcement
There's no way to know how badly things would have gone at the Berwyn Heights, Maryland home of Cheye and Trinity Calvo if Amir Johnson hadn't shown up when he did.
Johnson, a private on the local police force, was making his accustomed rounds in the neighborhood when he saw a swarm of heavily armed men laying siege to the Calvo home. Inside, Cheye and his mother-in-law, Georgia Porter, were being held face-down at gunpoint with their hands tied behind their backs. The Calvo family's two black Labradors, Chase and Payton, were dead from gunshot wounds. The assailants who killed the dogs were leaving bloody bootprints throughout the home.
