Reminds me of the sometimes cheesy 80s Patrick Swayze movie RED DAWN where one of the first things the commies from Russia/Cuba do is grab the firearms registration forms so they can go and collect the guns from "the people".

This will only encourage people to quietly trade guns in the dead of night wearing raincoats and wide brimmed hats.

It is approaching the time when citizens learn about jury nullification. Two things that will destroy the system: 1)Every last victim of the law insists on a jury trial and will not ever agree to any plea agreement. 2) There are so many citizens that will not ever vote in a jury to convict a victim of the law. No matter what the evidence or how beautiful the arguments of the prosecutor they vote only for acquital.

This will result in endless hung juries and or acquitals. Jury nullification is always a right and is never discussed with a jury. To make this work on a national scale, it has to be told everywhere and often. When there is no chance for conviction, the law dies. When everybody insists on a jury trial, the expense would break the system and bog it down to a hopeless crawl. The order would go out to never arrest anybody for breaking this law.

Every attempt to control guns targets citizens. The excerpt from this bill is extremely blatant in this regard in that it makes no attempt to disguise gun control as a means to fight crime. It focuses exclusively on citizen defense.

Even if this bill doesn't go anywhere, it tests the waters for future legislation. The Fabians realized long ago that the best way to move toward a socialist paradise is to do it incrementally. Baby steps will get things like this through eventually.

Nancz, I know where you're coming from, but that is really bad advice about the serial numbers. When it comes to them actually trying to take our firearms, then all's fair. Until then, I still intend to obey the law (I'm in CA, by the way).

If I ever legitimately had to use one of my weapons and it had filed-off numbers, guess who'd be going to jail...so while I'm still legally able to possess guns, they'll stay legit.

The Bill invokes the Interstate Commerce clause to justify this. Quite obviously, the interstate commerce is on the wholesale side of this. Once the "interstate commerce" has transacted you purchase a gun locally. Why should anyone have to get a Federal license when they aren't conducting anything close to interstate commerce?

I wish we could strike that Interstate Commerce clause out of the Constitution. Or barring that have a legislature that uses it as intended. These cynical statists have been using it to give pseudo-legal pretense to all manner of harm.

Fiberal -- You are right that gun ownership reduces crime. The irony is that with gun sales going through the roof, crime rates will likely drop and guess who's gonna get the credit. Our new, well-armed citizenry will be the obvious reason for crime rates dropping, but the new administration will get the credit and they'll point to inane legislation like HR-45 as the cause. It will be shown that a better armed populace has nothing to do with a safer society, furthering the idea that weapon ownership is unnecessary with 'intelligent' legislation.

It's also ironic that the closer Obama got to the White House, the greater firearm sales rose as people detected a threat to their rights. An anti-gun administration takes power, and we end up with more guns in society.

The gun industry is one of the few industries in America that is booming. An actual economic stimulus comes from an industry that the new administration abhors.

There is no doubt that Obama is Gun Salesman of the Year. But to the progressive mind, it's only the ignorant, paranoid, backward, right-wingers who are overreacting to Obama's ascendancy, because nothing indicates that this administration has any interest in tinkering with the 2nd Amendment.

RULES FOR A GUN, KNIFE, BASEBALL BAT OR FIST FIGHT
1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?"

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy."

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.

22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".

25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.

26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.

27. Redardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperatire.

28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, "He said he was going to kill me. I beleived him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney."

If an assailant (fancy word for scumbag son-of-a-bitch) has a gun to the temple of a loved one and he demands that you surrender your gun, DON"T DO IT.
If he is willing to kill your wife knowing that you will immediately kill him, how much more will he be willing to kill your wife and you after you have been disarmed.
Better to watch her die quickly and the SOB to die right away too than for you to be tied up and have to watch your wife be raped, beaten and killed before your eyes and then you killed too.
