The Enormity Before Us
Jay Nordlinger at National Review's The Corner:
I was talking to my friend and NR colleague Kevin Williamson yesterday, and he said, "You know, I wish the president-elect would learn the meaning of the word 'enormity.'" He keeps saying things like, "I recognize the enormity of what I'm about to undertake." Kevin quipped, "We may consider the upcoming administration an enormity, but…"
Mirriam-Webster's first two definitions of "enormity":
1: an outrageous, improper, vicious, or immoral act
2: the quality or state of being immoderate, monstrous, or outrageous ; especially : great wickedness
We won't be able to say we weren't warned.

Well, the 'enormity' of the sell-off on Wall Street today gives some example of the confidence that actual, real, non PC, vote with your wallet people are feeling.
We are screwed.

And THIS illustrates the "enormity" that's being spread thick on this day of days:
Benediction at Obama 's inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery: 'Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen'...
"WE ARE ONE"? You betcha.

Oopsie Daisy! The poster accidentally forgot to include all of the definitions of enormity. They also missed out on the accompanying text directly regarding the complaints of our President’s usage of the word. Here from the same link:
3: the quality or state of being huge : immensity
4: a quality of momentous importance or impact
usage Enormity, some people insist, is improperly used to denote large size. They insist on enormousness for this meaning, and would limit enormity to the meaning “great wickedness.” Those who urge such a limitation may not recognize the subtlety with which enormity is actually used. It regularly denotes a considerable departure from the expected or normal . When used to denote large size, either literal or figurative, it usually suggests something so large as to seem overwhelming and may even be used to suggest both great size and deviation from morality . It can also emphasize the momentousness of what has happened or of its consequences .
You're welcome!
P.S. Good luck on trying to insult the President with regards to his intelligence...

Yes, this has been picked up by the Brits' press as well (http://www.spectator.co.uk/stephenpollard/2577621/the-enormity-of-the-situation.thtml)
Posted by: pHDependentNeoCon at January 20, 2009 4:43 PM
that is funny!
Still, I think O probably means something like "enormousness" or some such.
I'm tempted to say irregardless here.
Posted by: fine ahht at January 20, 2009 5:10 PM
"I'm tempted to say irregardless here." Me too :-)
And BTW Anna dear, it's not OBAMA's intelligence that's a concern so much as that of those who worship him so blindly.

P.S. Good luck on trying to insult the President with regards to his intelligence...
I think he did that himself when he fumbled the oath of office.
Posted by: V the K at January 20, 2009 5:44 PM
Also, Anna, if your messiah is so smart, why won't he release his college transcripts, so we can see what kind of grades he got?
Posted by: V the K at January 20, 2009 5:53 PM
What V the K said.
With His Majesty's Intellect of Enormity so profoundly heralded, The One has quite a standard to uphold. Whatever shall we do if he screws something up? It was easy when Bush screwed up - eh, he's an idiot.

Folks what libacrits like anna don't understand is that we conservatives know what to expect from obaba. The slobbering libacrits that bought all that "change" bullshit that obaba was shoveling are in for a big letdown and I will love watching their heads spin around.

GREAT point, Kathleen. I'm copying your comment and emailing it to some friends!
Posted by: matt at January 20, 2009 6:10 PM
Well, I think you need to get a better dictionary, or keep reading further in the one you have.
• (in neutral use) the large size or scale of something : the enormity of his intellect. See usage below.
Posted by: shelley matheis at January 20, 2009 6:16 PM
If oratory skills, in particular the ability to give a speech and say nothing at all, were a sign of intelligence then every news broadcaster and televangelist could be assumed to be intelligent. I can assure you it is not necessarily so.

"P.S. Good luck on trying to insult the President with regards to his intelligence..."
I think Imus has a question for you.
Posted by: Henry at January 20, 2009 7:36 PM
would the hind end of this shot be the enormity before u.s.?

I looked up at the tv when I heard this and saw Hussein smirking in response to the white comment. And then the fools in the audience clapped! Am I living in the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something cuz it's starting to feel like it.

"P.S. Good luck on trying to insult the President with regards to his intelligence..."
Are you referring to the same President Hussein who said he visited all 57 states?
Posted by: Anonymous at January 20, 2009 8:54 PM
Hey ! Something is wrong with my television ! Every channel is carrying that Planet of the Apes episode where they take over the White House...
Posted by: C-Bug at January 20, 2009 8:55 PM
Kathleen makes a good point. Pinning your hopes on a prez candidate are sure to lead to some let downs.
I've not seen this worship or over dedication that folks reference but then I did not look that hard. Every candidate gets that. A more popular candidate even more so. I'm guessing McCain get it too.
C-bug, calling O an ape is basically showing racial hatred in my mind. I wonder what sort of genes you have in your veins. If you shared a gene with O would that change your views at all? What are the "ape" like characteristics that you are referencing in your little joke?

"Uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... uh... all 57 states... uh... uh... uh..."
To insult snObama's intelligence would be presumptuous that the liberal’s boy has any intelligence to begin with. Liberal America would have elected Al Sharpton if he was (in the words of the new usually inebriated VP) "clean and articulate".
And if Zero is SO freaking 'bright' whay has he refused to release ANY of his college transcripts, hmmm?
Anna - you've been blinded by a continual bombardment from the dark. My advice - invest in a flashlight.

To "ape" is to copy. All that has been on the tube for weeks is one "news"person aping another, and in fact attempting to out-do others with inappropriate, unearned praise. From coast to coast, country to country - France to Japan - it has indeed become a "Planet of the Apes".
Tell us, "fine ahht" - is it okay to post pictures of Bush morphing into a chimpanzee on the office wall, but racist and out of bounds to utter the word "ape" when referring to an overall blown out of proportion event that is NOT a coronation of a new god, but simply the 44th installment of a mere man (an unqualified man, I should add) as president?
Perhaps you're the racist - or at least one of those who sees fit to inject race into every breath you take. Get over it and get a life. It’s the silly liberals and the “psychotically guilty” who keep racism alive.

Let's see...
A bungling illegal alien cum political hack who knows nothing about free enterprise economics taking office with a bunch of Clinton re-treads just as the US economy is crumbling under a minority driven subprime mortgage crisis that he helped create...
What could possibly go wrong?
As a fellow at work said today:
Obama’s inauguration marks his peak and it is all just going to be a toboggan ride to hell for everyone, from here.

Specious argument.
Humans have DNA in common with dolphins and mollusks, so what's your point? A person's race is determined not by the entire make up by the dominant make up.
Even if someone's distant ancestor was white, black or Asian, etc if they do not have those dominant characteristics anymore then they would be classed as Caucasian, Hispanic, or whatever their case may be.
You can use reverse transcription RT-PCR. You take the sample of an individual and run a melt curve. It will show you which aspect of your inherited genes are expressed more.
That's not 'racism'. That's just hard fact and I know that facts and logic are to liberals what garlic and sunlight are to vampires.
Obama is a half-breed. He is half white and half black. Would the term mullatto be better?
White people can be called 'honkies', 'crackers', 'white devils' without ANY repercussions by blacks and so forth but any factual remarks about The One's heritage is verboten?
Heck I thought race didn't matter anymore, anyways, right? Nice to know that fine liberal hypocrisy is still alive and breathing.
I take comfort in the fact that the same people who are 'eating Obama up' will turn to 'eating him alive' in a couple of years when he shows people that he is, in fact, just a mere mortal like the rest of us.
What's worse, just another political hack.
Posted by: Stephen K. at January 20, 2009 10:22 PM
Get used to the MSM covering The One's butt for the next couple of years. They'll shield their precious, little Marxist darling and the public from his incompetence for as long as they can.
BTW, I am just going to sign in a SK from now on.

O-o-o-o... I used the words "big buck" when speaking of the 'annointed zero' - damn - now I'm a racist according to "fine ahht".

SK - speaking of Byrd.
You think his little medical problem today at the Capitol Lunch had anything to do with the final realization that a Negro was the Prez, and afterall, Byrd was a BIG DEMOCRATIC PARTY shaker and mover in the KKK?
I guess reality sucks for Democrats like Byrd.
Posted by: Anonymous at January 20, 2009 11:31 PM
[I guess reality sucks for Democrats like Byrd.]
My theory of Democrats is that they want minorities to rise just high enough to keep them happy but not so high that they would be on par with them.
To the majority of them, even the minority Democrats who are successful or in politics, the smell of the unwashed masses is too much to bear. They're fine for votes but that's about it.
For example, note 'fine ahhht' and his/her backwards attitude in support of the old racist canard of 'a !@##$% in the woodpile' or what these pigs call 'the one drop rule'.
Disgusting.

Anonymous, can you please describe what you saw? It's been scrubbed.
As to Obama's intelligence, if he's such a genius, why can't he study observable history, and understand that Keynsian economics lead to Great Depression, while Friedman economics lead to prosperity?

I love how the media and Himself are talking about the enormity (in every sense) of the problems He has to face. Aren't they the very same problems faced in Australia, England France? Aren't they the very same problems faced by Blair, Bush, Howard etc. Did they just materialise just before coronation?
Or are they just subtly saying dont be surprised if He comes a gutser, these are truly big problems.?
