In 1976, in the aftermath of Watergate, the Democrats knew that whoever they nominated would be elected. Consequently the major Democrat factions squabbled bitterly over whose turn it was in the barrel, and Jimmy Carter was the compromise that nobody really wanted. He arrived in Washington with no allies in Congress, since his own party considered him a placeholder for whichever faction head would get the Democrat nomination in 1984 - or possibly even 1980.

I think the experience drove him mad. Ever since losing to Reagan he has run around the globe obsessively seeking approval from the kind of people who should have respected him when he was President. It's sad.

No, this man was once the elected leader of our country who sought and got a treaty to hand away one of our most valuable assets and my former home, to a NON-elected lead of another country, a dictator.
