Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Busted for Corruption

How thoughtful of Democrats to rescue us from the Culture of Corruption. The latest from Obamaland:

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris were arrested Tuesday morning in Chicago on two counts each of federal corruption charges stemming from allegations Blagojevich was trying to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat to the highest bidder.
The arrest is part of a three-year probe of "pay-to-play politics" in the governor's administration. The criminal complaint by the FBI says each man was arrested on two charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.
The charges also relate to allegations that Blagojevich and Harris schemed with previously convicted defendants and Obama associates Antoin Rezko, Stuart Levine, Ali Ata and others to arrange financial benefits in exchange for appointments to state boards and commissions, state employment, state contracts and access to state funds.

Blagojevich (D) also attempted to use government assistance to the sinking Tribune Company as leverage to suppress editorial criticism. He took office after the last governor, George Ryan, got 6 1/2 years on federal corruption charges.

Get used to Illinois politics. Next month they're going national.

No one says "cheese" like Blagojevich.

I have never seen a creepier looking politician I my life. Weird.

Posted by: My Awesome Mix Tape #6 at December 9, 2008 9:06 AM

he was just on the news citing his "watergate" entrapment.

the smoking gun - "Attached to the U.S. District Court complaint is an FBI affidavit, excerpted below, alleging that Blagojevich was caught on wiretaps noting that the Senate seat "is a fucking valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing." He was also recorded saying that unless "I get something real good," he would appoint himself to the vacancy. "I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I'm saying. And if I don't get what I want and I'm not satisfied with it, then I'll just take the Senate seat myself."

what a pig.

WTF, my kids use that exact smile when they're guilty as hell of something. Perfect pix, Van.

According to an article Laura Ingraham just read from, there's a person on the list of possible senator choices who may have made an offer to the Hon. Ill. Gov. Ingraham says the list of possibles for O'Bama's seat include (forgive the spelling):

Jesse Jackson, Jr. (say no more)
Valerie Jerrett (an O'Bama transition team member)
Tammy Duckworth (Iraq war double amputee vet)
IL Atty Gen Alisa Matigan

Will this possibly rain on The One's coronation parade a wee? Inquiring minds...

Posted by: The MaryHunter at December 9, 2008 9:19 AM

Well I hope it rains on the coronation parade; everybody pray for rain on inauguration; they're not allowing umbrellas.

Could this guy be any uglier? Could his eyes be any closer together? You're right about that smile, nanc, he could have canary feathers hanging out of it.

Another Chicago thug, and now we all get to have one of our own. Thanks, demoncrats.

Posted by: Karin at December 9, 2008 9:47 AM

It was nice of the FBI to wait until after the election to issue any indictments.

Posted by: Beef at December 9, 2008 10:00 AM

All he needs is a few freckles and he'll be a ringer for Howdy Doodie

Posted by: JamesJ at December 9, 2008 10:04 AM

Anyone want to place bets on who will be on O'Bama's pardon list?

Posted by: The MaryHunter at December 9, 2008 10:08 AM

the press conference is on fox news right now.

Posted by: nanc at December 9, 2008 10:14 AM

interesting observation
MSM is starting to cover the dirt on Obama & the Democrats now that all the newspapers are filing for bankruptcy .... could it be that they have realized that the truth sells papers and that Obama praises & ass kissing don't?

Posted by: blue at December 9, 2008 10:51 AM

nanc, that is repulsive that he could be so blatant about it.
Here's hoping he gets a nice, long jail sentence.

Posted by: Adam at December 9, 2008 10:55 AM

Rush just said that they're trying to impeach Blago asap, because apparently, under Illinois law, he could still make the senatorial appointment from his jail cell.

Man, what a state.

Posted by: The MaryHunter at December 9, 2008 11:02 AM

adam - i have a feeling more of this type of thing goes on than we could imagine.

cannot wait for the rezko/obama dirt comes out.

Posted by: nanc at December 9, 2008 11:03 AM

Van's last point is a crucial one: he tried to use government assistance to the ailing Tribune company, whose editors have been highly critical of Blagojevich, to get certain editors fired and replaced with editors friendlier to him. Think about that next time someone wants to bail out the newspapers with government funds.

These guys are so blatant it is mind-boggling. They know they're being watched. I heard the Illinois US attorney on the radio this morning explaining what the indictment was all about, and he related part of a wiretap tape in which the Governor said that they had to be careful, because everyone was listening. He had no idea how right he was!

Is that Dennis Kucinich's evil twin?

Posted by: Anonymous at December 9, 2008 11:26 AM

Obama's response:
"Illinois?? we never said we were from Illinois, what we meant was............"

Posted by: blue at December 9, 2008 11:26 AM

Is his barber going to the slammer for mal-practice as well???

Delicious with a nice big serving of Hopenchange !!!!

Does "D" after a politician's name really mean "(D)is-honest"?????

Posted by: Ziggy at December 9, 2008 11:35 AM

He looks like the Love Child of Dennis Kucinich and John Kerry from a science experiment gone horribly wrong.

Posted by: Name at December 9, 2008 11:57 AM

D - stands for DEFENDANT

Posted by: Name at December 9, 2008 12:08 PM

Too bad but it looks like OBAMA has lost one of his bosome buddies the liberal demacreep who dont want his states citizens to keep and bear arms i cant think of a more nasteir creep to get sacked and impeached

Posted by: Spurwing Plover at December 9, 2008 12:28 PM

The Dems are not protecting him; they're moving as far away as possible. Even Dickie Durbin is calling for a special election now.

I'm just waiting for The One to pronounce, "That's not the Rod Blagojevich I knew!"

Posted by: Pam at December 9, 2008 12:57 PM

".... could it be that they have realized that the truth sells papers and that Obama praises & ass kissing don't?"

Blue, this is only just beginning. Remember the man hasn't even been officially inaugurated yet- and they're already starting to turn on him... His mouth wrote a lot of cheques his ass won't be able to cash. It's a going to be a loooong fall off of that pedestal (or, post) he got himself put up on.

Posted by: Murff at December 9, 2008 1:01 PM

I have to scroll past his atrociously-ugly mug to read the articles below. How long do we have to look at him? HOW did this guy get elected?? This picture reminds me of the starring role in a cheesy bad devil movie.

I think if just one man or woman with top notch ethics could break that Chicago machine, he/she would be a national hero.

Posted by: Karin at December 9, 2008 1:34 PM

I think this is all being rushed through so that it is down the memory hole by inauguration day.

Blagojevich didn't have the muscle to push Obama. He was too dumb to know that? Obama is solidifying his power by eliminating embarrassments and threats.

Posted by: Max at December 9, 2008 2:29 PM

"adam - i have a feeling more of this type of thing goes on than we could imagine."
Oh, I'm sure it does. I mean, Chicago pretty much wrote the book on corruption in all levels of government. I just thought the creep would be a little more subtle when talking about it.

Posted by: Adam at December 9, 2008 3:36 PM

The best part of this is that you know Blow-Dry Rod will start singing like a canary when it comes time for a plea-bargain. And in Illinois, god only knows what's going to come out of that. He knows where all the bodies are buried.

Popcorn, anyone?

Posted by: Rob Banks at December 9, 2008 3:48 PM

Did he say "Watergate"???

I remember seeing a picture of Nixon captioned: "Would you buy a used car from this man?"

Hmmm...

Posted by: Peet at December 9, 2008 4:54 PM

It didn't take The Kenyan long to throw him under the bus with all the others.

Posted by: Jimbo at December 9, 2008 4:56 PM

“This makes for the fourth out of the last seven elected Illinois governors to be indicted since 1960 (Otto Kerner, Dan Walker, George Ryan, and Rod Blagojevich) … since 1972, 28 Chicago alderman have been convicted of crimes. If this number was extrapolated to the US House, it would be as if over 240 congressman had been indicted in the same period.”

Q: What did one Illinois prison inmate say to the other?

A: "The food was better when you were Governor."

Breaking Wind, I mean, News

1. "So, if I get sentenced to eight years or less, I can still run for president in 2016?" The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come was really unprepared for this idiot.

2. "I sure as f**k *am* the Blago that you knew, Barry Soetero!"

3. 2016??? No, that's not the year Chairman O leaves office, that's the Dow six months after Chairman O *takes* office.

4. "So, all of a sudden it's wrong for a dedicated public servant to make a few bucks selling a senate seat that hasn't even been used in three years. Jeez, next thing you know, you'll be coming after me for those fourteen year old hitchhikers I got buried in the crawlspace... What?"

5. "Donald Trump framed me, I tell you. He's jealous of my hair!"

Posted by: Ziggy at December 9, 2008 5:29 PM

You beat me to the comparison, DENNIS!

"D" stands for "D'OH!"

Once in a while, you see a real heartwarming story in the news. Like this one. Ahhh, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Enjoy Club Fed, moron!

Posted by: PabloD at December 9, 2008 7:05 PM

Whoa! He looks as gay as a french horn! I'll bet he calls in sick Wednesday! Ha!

Loser!

Posted by: Hugh Jainus at December 9, 2008 8:52 PM

Blagojevich is a remarkably stupid man. He's had the Feds all over him for the last 3 years and he still runs around openly soliciting bribes and kickbacks.

Although it worked well for Obama so I guess he felt it was time for him to cash in too.

However, Blagojevich is white so he can't get away with calling his critics racist. Oh well, hope they let him bunk with ex-Gov Ryan. haha

Posted by: Cartman at December 9, 2008 9:45 PM

Suzanne Goldenberg for the UK Guardian: “SIN CITY; The FBI agent who oversaw the investigation into Rod Blagejovich may have put it best yesterday when asked about corruption in Illinois. ‘If it isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor,’ Robert Grant told a press conference. Over the last 30 years, at least three governors, a mayor, and a few dozen local government officials in Chicago have been convicted of criminal offences. In 1994-2004, a total of 469 Illinois politicians were found guilty of corruption – more than any other region except [C]entral California [emphasis mine] and south Florida, Slate magazine reported.”

Barack Obama did manage to blurt: “I had no contact whatsoev … [before catching himself] with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening.” I believe anyone who climbs into bed with Hillary Clinton, whatever the reason, has to be corrupt beyond belief. Nobody is immune to that kind of corruption. At this juncture America needs confidence in its leadership as never before. But with these individuals at the helm, I think we’re in for a very long, very unpleasant crisis of confidence. In fact I get the feeling that we’re going straight over the proverbial precipice. And, to think it all began with the machine politics and one-party rule of California’s Central Coast: http://theseedsof9-11.com

what's all this talk about calling for Blagojevich to "resign?" ... "throw him in prison" sounds a lot more fitting

it gives me chills to see how calm and collected he continues to act
