Felons Receive Compensation for Being Forced to Quit Heroin

This is what moonbattery can do to a legal system:

Drug-addicted prisoners have received compensation because their human rights were breached when they were forced to go cold turkey, it was revealed today.
Around £11,400 was paid to three inmates at Winchester Prison in Hampshire after a court ruled that it was a breach of their human rights to deny them drugs such as heroin and substitute substances. … The money was part of about £50,000 paid out in one year to seven inmates at the prison.

Next, terrorists will be given cash compensation for the emotional withdrawal they experience when incarceration prevents them from murdering infidels.

On a tip from V the K.

Comments

They hand the cash over to the addicts, the addicts use it to buy drugs, addicts commit additional crimes or die, the prison gets sued again.

The Mumbai terrorists wanted to kill 5,000 people but only managed a mere 200. I suppose they'll be claiming compensation now then. Maybe Bill Ayers could be their lawyer.

Why even bother to keep a civilized world anymore? Let's just go savage for one day and treat these (CENSORED!) as they treat us!

They should pay the prison $20K a month for rehab.

Bringing someone down off heroin without drugs is risky and can cause death.

The prison officials acted negligently here. And for once...the judge was in the right.

Doing heroin is risky and can cause death. The prison was just preventing them from engaging in potentially life-threatening activity.

i'd love to see you liberaltarians who sometimes post here try to explain that.

Kenny,

Heroin withdrawal does not cause death in anyone who isn't already seriously ill with another disease. Severe Alcohol, barbiturate, and benzodiazapine withdrawal can cause death, but not opiates.

The vomiting, diarrhea, moaning and insomnia could be a disruption to the staff and other prisoners, but the addicts won't die as long as they have plenty of water.

For practical reasons, it may be a good idea to give addict prisoners moderate doses of methadone, and gradually wean them off, but cold turkey does not mean death.

Forced cold turkey withdrawal in a cell will not cause death, but what can contribute to death is handing an addict a lump sum of money after he gets out of jail. He will either use it to buy dope and OD, or a more industrious junky will use it as a stake to buy a bunch of dope and start dealing. I'll go out on a limb here and say that enabling junkies with a bunch of cash is reckless.

Posted by: forest at December 5, 2008 6:57 AM

wouldn't it be easier to just give every junkie an overdose?

...did i say that out loud?

And as the 70s anti-drug ad went WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL IT DOPE?
