Winston Smith Goes to Work for Obama Camp
In the prescient 1984, Winston Smith's job was to rewrite history to fit current government policy, tossing anything that the State wanted forgotten down the memory hole. In the Internet age, this task is all too easy, as Obama's henchmen have proven by replacing the ominous "agenda" pages from their Change.gov site with vague mush.
Agenda items had included issues like gun control, a drastic unemployment-inducing hike in the minimum wage, and throwing a monkey wrench into NAFTA. As LT Nixon asks,
Remember when millions of Americans who work for a living had to unite under the NRA lobby to prevent gun control weenies from labeling them a bunch of brain-dead, violent hicks? Remember the whole "living wage" debate in the mid-90s designed to cripple small businesses? Remember the anti-free trade movement which culminated in the destruction of downtown Seattle circa 1999?
This could be an encouraging sign that Obama really did magically change from a radical to a moderate during the last few months of his campaign. But CNET warns:
The ephemeral nature of Web publishing does raise some serious issues: if a president-elect circulates a physical press release promising to do something, and then changes his mind, there's a paper trail. That doesn't exist when files are added to a Web site and then quietly removed over a weekend.
You have to wonder what other promises might vanish into the Internet ether — and why Obama should stop with promises. Instead of throwing his many unseemly associates under the bus, a new cabinet-level Department of Official Reality might erase them from history, Soviet style. Given their record of compliance with communist China, I'm sure Google and Yahoo would be glad to offer technical expertise.
Hat tip: Four Horsemen of the Obacalypse.
Update:
There's an archived version of Chairman O's erased agenda here. On a tip from David P.
