Ronaldus Magnus and the Anti-Reagan

To grasp the full horror of Barack Obama being elected President, compare his vacuous drivel about "hope" and "change" to the stirring and meaningful words of our last great leader, Ronald Reagan. His magnificent speech "A Time for Choosing" (audio)— made in support of Barry Goldwater, who attempted to thwart the morbid explosion of government inflicted by LBJ — would be very appropriate today, if only there were someone of Reagan's caliber around to deliver it. A sample:

Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.
And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest and the most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man.
This is the issue of this election: whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.
You and I are told increasingly we have to choose between a left or right. Well I'd like to suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There's only an up or down: man's [age-old] dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order, or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. And regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

How appalling that we would elect the anti-Reagan, a leftist radical who personifies that downward course.

So long as we retain our fundamental liberties, the mistake can be corrected. But one day soon we will realize we don't own our own property. Guns will be confiscated and radio programs forced off the air. At that point, the sacred gift of freedom that was entrusted to us will have been squandered, and we'll have to prove we have the mettle to re-create it from scratch.

This can be done, but like most downward slopes, or drops, you have to hit rock bottom before girding your loins and starting back up. In that period of time, the American dream will become a nightmare.

I read the headlines this morning, of an online story on CNN about Barney being out. I thought, at least there is some good news in all this. Then clicking on it, revealed it was Bush's damn dog instead of Barney Frank.

I heard that speech.

It's one of the reasons he was one of the most popular presidents in our history.

During my many lonely years in San Francisco, I had a co-worker who used the "trust but varify" quote. I reminded her who it was from. She turned green and damn near threw up.

It was indeed a "moonbat moment". I will charish 'till the day I die the look on her face when I told her she was quoting Ronny.

Reagan not only negoitiated with terrorists, he actually illegaly provided our mortal enemies with weapons and the means to destroy us. He befriended Saddam Hussein,among other infamous dictators, who a mere 20 years later, was portrayed by another Republican admin. as the greatest threat to the world since Hitler.

Since Reagan, the Republican party has been hijacked by the Christian fundamentalists, who seek to impose their values on everyone.

Reagan also ran the country into the greatest debt seen up to that point which has only been surpassed by the current bumbling republican admin.

Amazing to me that none of you can recognize the fact that the country has been pushed to the brink of total collapse and ruin on a number of crucial issues after 8 years of Bush/Republican "leadership". It will be the Dems insurmountable job to clean it up. How anyone could look at the results of the past 8 years and feel that America is in a better position than it was at the start is beyond me.

Not only has the Bush admin weakened the country fiscally and psychologically, he has left his party in a shambles, as evidenced by McCain's eagerness to distance himself from him as much as possible. Obama did get over 300 elctoral votes a landslide certainly in that sense. Popular vote: 53% to 46% for McCain is a relatively substantial margin.

And where is the hate you refer to? i simply point out how Bush has been an obvious failure and how he has furhter weakned his party. The Republican party has not alwyas been a prisoner of right wing religious extremists, but since the Reagan era they have relied heavily on the Bible belt religious fundamentalists and the wealthy as their base. That apparently isn't enough anymore.

You all hated the bailout? i haven't seen too much complaining or calls of "communist" about Bush and Mccain and the rest of the Republicans who supported the bill.

Let this be a lesson to the Republicans:

Screw your soldiers and this is what you get.

So 9/11 happened, and in we went (yes, me included) to Afghanistan. Great. Wonderful. We're taking out the people who attacked us and set up a terrorist state. But then what do you do before the job is finished, you decide to lie your way into war with a country that has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING except that it has a lot of oil. So you turn the only war worth fighting for into a forgotten war. And now all our work in Aghanistan is being undone because all the resources are going to Iraq. Great job.


Then come the Bush tax cuts...and there go my benefits. The rich men who STARTED the war iterally stole the money out of the pockets of the young men fighting it. When I was doing my second tour (this time in Baghdad) my wife came down with a staff infection back Stateside. Due to cuts in my Tricare benedits, we had to pay over 5K out of pocket for her emergency care. Apparently that little extra luxery for the rich matters more to you than the basic needs of military families.

THEN you Republicans decide to fight AGAINST the GI Bill. Tooth and nail. Including John McCain. A veteran. You then expect me to vote for a man who won't even look out for his own?

THEN you decide to attack people receiving government funds. The last two months all I've heard is that ANYONE living of government money is a louse and a thief and a scavenger. Kind of forgot that us soldiers are PAID in tax dollars. Poorly. And as a result 25% of military families are on welfare. But to you we're just scavengers. Yeah...we don't take kindly to being called losers and scavengers after we fought so YOU don't have to.

I know most people think soldiers are idiots. And you know what, some are. But not as dumb as you think. You guys thought that you could just screw us over again and again but so long as you put those yellow ribbons (made in china) on your cars and said "We support the troops" that we'd think you actually MEANT it.

Actions speak louder than words. I am an independant who ALWAYS voted Republican, but never again.

You betray the troops, you're going to pay. Not only did you loose innumerable votes from toops themselves, we did plenty of campaigning with groups like Iraqi Veterans agains Mccain, and people listened to what we had to say. And they voted Obama.

Have any of you idiots ever BEEN to any of these countries? It's like going into the future. Their entire NATIONS look like only the wealthiest parts of the US do. Even with the global recession, these nations are being hit MUCH less hard than the United States is, and a recent worldwide poll done by The Metro showed that these socialist nations have the highest government approval rating, are least concerned about the economy, and most optimistic about their countries being able to compete in the global market place.

If you traveled or read books you might know these things.

Your argument falls flat because you haven't considered the commonality between the two regions you describe, not that this surprises me. The trend has nothing with the economic system and everything to do with demographics. The people in Northern Europe and richer parts of the US succeed because they're highly intelligent and have strong work ethics. They do well despite the socialist system, not because of it.

Yes, I've been overseas. Nice places to visit. Wouldn't want to live there.

I also lived for 3 years in one of the world's great tourist destinations, Yosemite. I made a lot of friends from everywhere on the planet.

Japanese have tons of money and no time. Whirlwind tourists.

The French, as a rule, really are almost as snotty, rude, and elitist as New Yorkers. Most of them (and Germans, Danes, etc.) have tons of time, what with their 9-month-a-year vacations, but not two pennies to rub together. And we were seeing the "rich" ones. The ones who loved America the most? Romanians. Czechs. Poles. Russians. People who had seen the FULL effects of socialism first hand (that Western Europe is sliding towards as we speak). They are now some of our staunchest allies... (well, except Russia). I wonder why that is?

Also incredible that Germany would be in this list with its high unemployment and with the region's worst economic slump in 15 years.



You know, the DAX Index has dropped 40 percent this year. Europe will enter a recession and the socialists will have no training or skills to rely on other than cleaning fish.

I also don't know what's meant by partial socialism (or Lunxemburg for that matter, but I sure can see the validity in a comparison to the U.S.A.: sarcasm off). My guess is that Shanaliberal took a train trip and became enamoured with a first-time change in scenery and kept a very effusive and bubbling diary throughout.
