"Mortgage Forgiven For Woman, 90, Who Shot Self
AKRON, Ohio (AP) ― Mortgage finance company Fannie Mae said it is forgiving the mortgage debt of a 90-year-old woman who shot herself in the chest as sheriff's deputies attempted to evict her.

Addie Polk's plight was cited by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, on Friday before the House voted to approve the $700 billion financial rescue package. Kucinich voted against the plan.

Fannie Mae announced later Friday that it would dismiss its foreclosure action, forgive Polk's mortgage and allow her to return to the Akron home where she's lived since 1970.

"Just given the circumstances, we think it's appropriate," Fannie Mae spokesman Brian Faith said, citing Kucinich's statement and news reports. "It certainly made our radar screen."

It would have been one thing to allow her to stay in the home then sell it when she dies, its another to just write off the mortgage so he relatives can profit.

I'm reading a lot of people saying, thank god the McCain campaign is finally going after Obama on Ayers et. al.

I think this is fundamentally misguided in a very major way.

There is only ONE issue that can move votes at this stage: the economy. Ceding the economy to Obama to waste time on Ayers and the others is pure self-delusion and suicide.

What are we expecting to see happen? That Democrats will say "Wow, I didn't realize Obama had all these questionable associations! I'm going to vote for McCain!"

Insanity.

Maybe if the Ayers attack was COMBINED with something substantive on the economy, it would make more sense.

The plan seems to be to have Obama putting up infomercial-length ads about his specific economic ideas, while McCain & Co. whine about associations that have already been blown off my the media and public.

This is very, very bad.

Reasoned interpretation of polling data shows McCain leading Obama 2 to 1 among undecided voters

Look at the policy preference break down of Lib-Con-Mod, it is split 23-37-36 - almost the REVERSE of the party ID break down. That means if you re-run the polls using policy preference as the weighting factor you could see the polls almost flip 180°! Democrats are up by 7%, but Cons are up by 14% - twice the advantage!

Even more interesting is the undecided poll. In the Party ID view undecideds are split equally between Dem-Rep-Ind at 28-26-43. This would lead one to allocate undecideds or leaners basically down the middle between Obama and McCain since the difference left and right is a statistically insignificant 2%.

But in the policy world view the picture is dramatically different. The Lib-Con-Mod mix is heavily tilted away from Obama’s base with 18-32-47. Here we see very little opportunity for Obama to take the undecided voters. Now the imbalance is 2:1 in favor of McCain, which holds a statistically huge 14% advantage.

Obama handed thousands in grants over to a relative while he was Illinois senator

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - As a state senator, Democrat Barack Obama awarded $75,000 in government grants to a Chicago social service organization led by a rabbi who is also his wife's cousin, records show.

In 1999, Obama arranged for $50,000 for adult literacy and counseling services offered on Chicago's South Side by a group called Blue Gargoyle. A $25,000 grant for the group's youth services followed the next year.

The group's executive director when the grants were awarded was Capers Funnye, a South Side rabbi and Michelle Obama's first cousin once removed.

Funnye (pronounced fun-NAY) said Monday there was nothing improper about the way Blue Gargoyle obtained the grants. Obama did not encourage him to apply for the money, he said, and Funnye denied using family connections to pressure Obama to approve the application.

Obama's presidential campaign said the grants supported valuable services.

"State Sen. Obama joined other legislators in securing funding for a well-established social services agency in his district that provided job training, employment counseling, and alternative education programs to approximately 1,200 Chicago residents each year," campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said.

Funnye noted that Blue Gargoyle got similar grants from another state legislator who had no family ties to the group.

"There was nothing funny, nothing below board," Funnye said. "Everything was done according to whatever guidelines the state of Illinois had in place."

But guidelines were practically nonexistent.

At the time, Illinois legislators were handing out hundreds of millions of dollars in grants. The money was part of a deal that legislative leaders cut with the governor to approve a major public-works program.

Each legislator could award money to favored groups and projects with basically no oversight. The grants were known as "member initiatives" and were similar to the congressional "earmarks" often criticized in Obama's presidential campaign against Republican John McCain.
