British Nanny Nazis Ban Sugar in Tea

There aren't many things left for nanny state totalitarians to ban in the name of our health. The latest from Britain:

School pupils have been told they can't put sugar in their tea or coffee because it is bad for them.
The decision at Tonypandy Community College in Rhondda, South Wales, follows guidelines from the Welsh Assembly to promote healthy eating. […]
The school said the sugar and sweeteners ban was a result of new guidelines from the Welsh Assembly government to promote health eating.
Headmaster Stephen Parry backed the move to cut down on sugar and salt in the children's diet.
He said it was part of a five-year action plan to 'improve the food and drink consumed throughout the school day'.

A five-year plan. I wonder where they got that idea.

The row over sugar comes after the 'Appetite for Life Action Plan' was launched by the Welsh Assembly to tackle childhood obesity and poor health.
The guidelines sent to education authorities say that tea or coffee should not have any added 'sweeteners, sugar, honey, colouring or flavourings'.
Other guidelines including no salt on tables, no confectionery or savoury snacks to be sold and no butter. […] It was also revealed that tomato ketchup has been banned from school canteens because it contains 'too much salt and sugar'.

How small a box can liberals force us to curl up inside before people start to rebel? If formerly great Britain is any indication, very small indeed.

On a tip from V the K.

The government has no business in this arena. However, parents need to step in and whip their fat little butterballs into shape. On a related note: No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

So much for Mary Poppins and her spoon full of sugar to make the medicine go down.

With all their yelping about 'endless wars', these liberals seem to enjoy the sort of privations that occurred in WWII. By rationing things like meat, sugar, butter and salt, they seem to be working to make Orwell's 1984 nightmare a reality.

What british food? Don't they all have to eat curries & whatnot as not to be labelled racist?

"School pupils have been told they can't put sugar in their tea or coffee because it is bad for them"

Oddly enough - when I was a "School Pupil" (1960's) we weren't allowed coffee - it was for grownups only (I think they figured us kids were hyper enough with out it).

Candy and softdrinks were also no-nos on school grounds (except for special occasions). Vending machines were unheard of.

I don't recall salt and pepper shakers being available on the lunchroom tables until middle-school.

Damn. I didn't know we were so deprived!

Anon, I eat curries because I enjoy them. They were brought home by the Empire a long, long time before the multiculti craze started and successfully incorporated into English culture.

America is not far behind; some governMENTAL idiot put "exercise" on the Food Pyramid. If exercise is a food, I'd like to see him/her survive for a week on push-ups and water! As a comparison, I'll eat nothing but a variety of candy bars and cokes.

Oh, that was me again, doh! I don't object to curries etc on principle, in fact, one of my 12 yo son's favorites is Lamb Korma, and I'm quite favorable to Chicken Makhani, among others. i was just referring back to a previous story where British children were to be reported to Big Brother as having racist tendencies if they turned their noses up at "ethnic" food.

I suppose now they,ll be after MARY POPPINS becuase of SPOON FULL OF SUGER HELPS THE MEDICINE GO DOWN all becuase of the food pests

Yeah, Spurwing! You tell em!

Can somebody show me solid evidence that salt in the diet is dangerous? Didn't think so. This is one of those health fantasies that just won't die. It sounded common-sensical to doctors, oh, about 50 years ago, but has yet to be proven. In fact, low salt is much more dangerous.

reported to Big Brother as having racist tendencies

... I remember that. Ye gods. I must have blanked it out or I would have got the joke. :D

All the 1984 references in these discussions gives me the creeps. I just finished that book the other night. I got a chill when I read the last four words. The whole dystopian nightmare seems all too possible now. Living on Victory Gin, Victory coffee, the chocolate ration, the material production goals always being exceeded, yada yada yada...
I'm going to sharpen my pitchfork and make sure the torches are ready to go... and my .44 Anaconda is loaded and clean.
