The sad (for them) truth is that most DU and Kos citizens are nothing but keyboard warriors who if they ever did try "taking to the streets" would end up standing in a confused huddle, blinking at the unfamiliar rays of the sun, their pasty skin glowing like jaundiced marshmallow, until they retreated inside to the safety of Starbucks to find a wireless hotspot and post something on DU wondering why no-one's "doing anything" to overthrow the criminal Bush regime and the diabolical Rethug political machine.

I was at a gathering the other night and this woman just could NOT let five minutes go by without pushing her agenda. ^^ Personally I think the Obama campaign has totally overplayed the race card and the black community will have such bad race-card fatigue by the election that none but the more radical elements will even care. Plus, Palin's addition to the GOP ticket gives conservatives our own identity-politics weapon, and a much more powerful one than B. Hussein. That's not to suggest that identity politics has the slightest to do with why Palin is there, or that using identity politics would ever cross her mind -- the fact is that she brings true conservatism with libertarian overtones to the ticket, as well as being a fresh new type of politician, one with integrity and commitment to ACTUAL change -- as well as just happening by being a woman to deflect any claims that the GOP is made up of old white men.

There will be (already has been, in fact) disruptions and even violence at the two conventions, but that's largely because hardcore socialists like your Dylan-humming compadre, and their anarchist counterparts, were de facto given a rallying point in which they could make lefty protest and "direct actions" appear to be a lot more effective and widespread than they actually are.

Long story short the election will result in four to eight years of constant whining and moaning by dems/lefties, a few isolated incidences of nothing-very-much happening, and a WHOLE F**KING LOT of people shifting to the GOP. Be they Hillary supporters, feminists, libertarians, even conservatives who were previously disaffected with Bush and McCain. Add to that the fact that the Iraq war will be over (succesfully) shortly and the one genuine issue "liberals" and leftists have had anything to say about will be gone. If I'm calling this correctly there should be nothing at all to worry about.

As for Oaiao's post -- this is exactly what I was referring to above re. conservatives being more effective. For instance conservative protestors normally number about a metric handful anywhere they go, yet simply by standing pat and behaving well not only get their message out more effectively than shrieking moonbats splashing feces on themselves, but also get the authorities on their side.

And bet your bottom dollar that conservative/libertarian/survivalist types would, if something major were to happen and the lefties actually did take to the streets, decimate the lefties with superior firepower, tactics and intelligence.

Personally I don't keep guns - I'm Australian and the gun ownership dynamic is a lot different there - but I flatter myself that my large size, proficiency in some horrifying catch wrestling and jiu jitsu moves, and incredibly solid skull render me fairly invulnerable in the event of major weirdness.

And libtards don't scare me in the least - nor should they anyone, particularly.

Matt - by all means carry if you feel unsafe. I'm not saying it's not necessary to take precautions - just that I don't think things will be quite as apolyptic as they might seem from the violence at the conventions.
