This guy is a piece of work. He is remarkably unfunny, and he's one of the most hateful comics working. I long for the days when liberal comics used to, you know, funny when bashing conservatives and Christians. Now they are, like Stanhope, hateful, bitter, bilious and remarkably unfunny. Even Whoopi Goldberg's bits are funnier that this piece of human excrement.

I'm mystified by the fact that someone who has been on TV a few times warrents ANY attention. I love comedy and good comics are some of the brightest people around - agree or disagree - they tend to lock in on the human condition and make it funny. A failed comic seems to me like a guy that has run the Peter Principle as far as possible and goes back to his day job as an overnight guy on the local FM station - so why does he matter?

As I explained yesterday in the open thread (I think that's where it surfaced), I've disliked Stanhope ever since he and Joe Rogan ran the Man Show into the ground in just a single season. When Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel hosted it, it was easily one of the funniest shows I EVER saw in my life, but Stanhope and Rogan made it into an absolute crap factory. It would have been better to just cancel it outright when Adam and Jimmy decided to leave. Ever since then, my dislike of Stanhope has increased with every high profile thing he's done (Which isn't saying much, but you get the idea). He's always been about as funny as a train wreck.

He just had sell-out shows in London's west end and has recieved minimum 4-star reviews in his recent reviews. He can fill any comedy club on any night and charge upwards of $1000 for an hour's work. He's a real failure!

Attack what the guy says, that's fair enough - but spluttering lies and ignorance of your target is just plain stupid.

1. "SavingBristol.com" aside, I wish people would abandon the misnomer "pro-abortion." Even the staunchest liberal doesn't get up in the morning and scan the obits for fetuses.

2. Stanhope's comedy isn't for everyone, but the reason you don't see him on Comedy Central is not because he's a failure but because he's not clean/vanilla enough for basic cable. Perhaps you missed the hour special he did for ShoTime just last year.

3. The Palins are being heralded as somehow heroic because of this unplanned teen pregnancy. Anyone whose mother was not on a presidential ticket would be labeled 'white trash' for that. Sarah P. asked that the matter be kept private, then she trotted Bristol and the hockey redneck out on the national stage for some hand-holdin' photo ops - this from the party that wants to make EVERYONE'S sexual/reproductive lives a matter of party business. Stanhope's site may be crude, but it highlights serious issues raised by this whole Palin affair - issues Americans think and talk about but the media doesn't except in the most banal ways.

His newest caper may be vile and disgusting and in poor taste, but so was Jonathan Swift when he wrote his satirical masterpiece, "A Modest Proposal" in which he suggested that the best way to end famine, would be to eat babies...and this was well over a hundred years ago.

Think what you want about the politics of abortion, but Doug Stanhope is far from a "failed comedian". He is one of the most brilliant comedians ever to come out of the United States.
