British Bureauweenies Open New Revenue Stream With Thinner Trash Bags

Britain's legions of bureaucrats don't seem to be any better at collecting trash than they are at providing healthcare. But they do show flashes of cleverness:

Thinner bin bags are being handed out to homeowners in the latest desperate cost-cutting measure by a local authority.
The plastic bags will be around five per cent slimmer than standard sacks.
Officials at Sevenoaks District Council, in Kent, blamed the move on the soaring cost of oil, which is used to make polymer-based products.
It says it is facing a £17,000 overspend on its refuse budget unless cuts were made.
But council tax campaigners and residents have complained that the new, flimsier bin bags are more likely to split, increasing the risk of rubbish blowing around streets and residents being fined for littering.

…thereby opening a new revenue stream. Brilliant!

On a tip from Oiao.

The soaring cost of oil? Apparently they haven't noticed that the cost of oil is down by $40/barrel since its peak a couple of months ago.

The offshore drilling restrictions are set to automatically expire on October 1st. Lobby your congresscrooks now to NOT pass any drilling legislation in the next 30 days!

This reminds me of the old Hefty bag commercials. lol What I don't get , however, is that since the bags are thinner, wpn't that require the use of more bags to securely contain the same amount of garbage a single sturdier bag would hold?

Yep, it's the low flow (Also called "two-flush") toilets all over again.

I saw something so ridiculous at the home-improvement store I had to laugh so I wouldn't cry... a "dual flush" toilet. At first I thought maybe they'd made one that would flush the 6L toilet twice in recognition that it needs to be, but no. It has (I think it was) a selectable 6L and 4L flush, so it would be either a two or three flusher. Woohoo. Like that proposed law in PR Austin TX, if I ever sell this place, you'd better bet I won't do it without installing low-flush toilets. Because I'm takin' my good ones with me.

When I sell this house, I'm taking all 3 Old Style big tank toilets with me!

I'll go to Home Depot and get the cheapest low flow replacements that I can find.

When I bought the other house, I was relieved (no pun intended) to know that it has two Old Style big tank toilets.

That kinda closed the deal, if you know what I mean.

As for trash bags, I can afford the correct bags that do not break.

Here's an idea that will save money: stop supplying free garbage bags (paid for by tax dollars) and let homeowners buy their own. So revolutionary no one does it...oh wait, we do that here in America.

But allowing mere citizens to make difficult decisions like which garbage bag to buy at the store is obviously not a part of the New Labour agenda.
