Nannyfornia as a Warning

As California tailspins into absurd nanny state totalitarianism, it's providing a warning as to what will await us if we let the left-wing media install Barack Obama in the White House. A view from Britain, where they know a thing or two about nanny states:

The outdoor smoking ban [in Calabasas] is just one example of a frenzy of puritanical edicts from California's politicians that in the past few weeks has outlawed trans fat in all restaurant food, prevented LA supermarkets from handing out plastic bags, and put a halt to fast-food joints opening in the suburb formerly known as South Central. Other recent bans — and attempted bans — have challenged such monumental threats to human wellbeing as helium balloons, camp fires, circuses, swearing, texting while stopped at traffic lights, anything made from a dead kangaroo, dogs sitting on drivers' laps, homeschooling, rodeos, unordered tapwater in diners, spanking, nude beaches, and (this is true) the use of sexually-discriminating terms such as "Mom" and "Dad" in school classrooms.
Of course, some of these things deserve to be discouraged. But criminalised? "It's becoming almost like an arms race as to who can ban more things," says Jim Ross, the veteran California political consultant who managed the campaign to elect Gavin Newsom as Mayor of San Francisco. "San Francisco bans plastic bags, then LA bans plastics, then everyone else has to. It's ironic, because the US was founded as a reaction to the colonists telling them what to do."

But that was before Change.

All this raises a disturbing question, of course: is Nannyfornia providing us with a glimpse of what Obama's America might look like? After all, Obama is a classic banner. He recently proposed banning all toys from China. He banned his own staff from wearing green clothing during his recent trip to the Middle East (green is the colour of the Hamas flag). He banned the New Yorker magazine from his press plane after it depicted him as a terrorist in a political cartoon. He wants to ban "excessive" profits by raising capital gains tax. Why? Because he thinks it's fair. No matter that the state's revenues from the tax have always gone up whenever the rate has been lowered.

Now that California has succumbed to moonbat authoritarians, more Americans are moving out of the state than moving into it. But with the moonbat authoritarians in the White House, there will be nowhere to run.

Change isn't always for the better.

Or Nan-nee-for-nee-ya, as the Governator might say.

As wacko as many (most?) of them are, I feel very bad for them. People are already leaving the state faster than they are coming in, and I heard that the number of very wealthy people are fleeing as soon as they can sell their overpriced houses. Businesses will either close or not come in at all, preferring a less hostile environment (Wisconsin has this problem, too). The tax revenue take will fall as property values decline and as the wealthy move out. With a huge bureaucracy to support, what will California do? Raise taxes to support it, of course. And there will be no one left to soak but the middle class.

And still they'll vote Democrat. Maybe I don't feel that sorry for them after all - they chose their own fate.

Wall-E had it wrong. The world will never be taken over by a corporation, because corporations do not have the power to confiscate money to support themselves and cover up their failings. Only government has that ability. As big, influential (not powerful; only government has any real power), and successful as corporations become, once they stop serving the customer, another corporation will rise up that will. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen - witness the years of crappy service we got from cable/phone companies that improved dramatically after satellite TV/digital phone became an option. It took years, but it did happen.

Welcome to the New Fascism.

>>No matter that the state's revenues from the tax have always gone up whenever the rate has been lowered.>>

Part of the problem is that a lot of people (Including some polititions who should know better) don't know the diffrence between "taxes" and "revenue". TAXES are basicly the government saying "we need money, give us some of yours" while REVENUE is the RESULT of taxation: cash, property and --on rare occasions-- services.

TO ALL LIBERALS WHO THINK CONSERVATIVES DON'T WANT TO PAY TAXES:
In the olden days, the king's Sherrif would collect X AMMOUNT from the population (and this would take the form of crops and livestock more often than gold and silver) in good times and in bad, but later a fairer system was created where a PRECENTAGE of property and/or income was collected by the government. This works to the advantage of all because when the people are alowed to keep a majority of their income, they can invest it in businesses, improve their property, loan it to others and generaly increese their wealth which in turn makes them MORE money which makes the government's cut larger as well.

Coder,

I have lived in Nannyfornia all of my 45 years. I proudly cast my first presidential vote 2 months after my 18th birthday for Ronald Reagan. As my friends and family are all here and the weather can't be beat, I'll never move.

The problem in Nannyfornia is simple. The ratio of tenants to landlords, renters to homeowners and workers to business owners is too far upside down.

In the 80's when I was an apartment tenant in The People's Republic of Santa Monica, I sent away the door-to-door Rent Control petition trolls with a polite but firm, "F*** Tom Hayden." (OK, not so polite, but firm.) The look of confusion on their faces was priceless. I treated the place as if I owned it and took great care of my apartment.

When I was a worker and not a business owner, I treated everything thing I did as if I had a stake in the business.

Unfortunately, that kind of thinking, much like (un)common sense, is not being instilled in the next generation by enough parents.

It's more often, "What can I get" and not, "What's the right thing to do?" JFK had it right. Unfortunately, not enough people believe that anymore.

And when you can no longer run, when reason fails,

force prevails...

Before you know it, it will be against the law in California to pee standing up. I'm sure Michelle already makes Hussein squat.

Let's enjoy Moonbattery.com while we can, because if this nation becomes an Obamanation, there will be desolation of the Internet.

Please, let's remember my "coined" term: Nastapo. The Nanny State Gestapo, right?

I'm old enough to remember California as it was, and it WAS a pretty great place. Once the Beat and Hippie generations grew older (but not up) and got into the schools and government, we've been screwed.

Add to that mix about three million Undocumented Migrant Guest Workers and you've got the makings of a totalitarian Third World country. L.A. is going to look like Beirut one of these days...and have all the freedoms of Moscow in the 1960's.

Obama in '08, baby.

And still they'll vote Democrat. Maybe I don't feel that sorry for them after all - they chose their own fate.

Worse than that, when they move, they still vote Democrat. There's a reason people have "Native Born" bumper stickers on their cars in Colorado.

This is the part that royally pisses me off - they aren't happy to merely foul their own nest, after they make their own states unlivable, they move on and do the same to everyone else's.

I personally know 5 Democrats that moved from Illinois to Indiana in the last 2 years to escape the taxes and regulation. Think that changed their voting habits? Guess again...

In other news, we now have Moonbat vs. Moonbat. This is a good thing.

And speaking of Britain, apparently a cemetary in Britain has banned plastic flowers.

I'm starting to feel bad about heckling Britain. It's getting too much like shooting fish in a barrel...

Betcha the leftover money from his campaign goes straight into the NEA’s coffers.

That Obamaganda poster is eerily reminiscent of the early Nazi 'SA Voran' (translate: 'SA in front') poster. Complete with Obama's squinty, vaguely sinister facial expression.

Look it up, post the two side by side...It's creepy.

"we're all doomed if we don't submit to totalitarianism in the name of global warming"
..no need for this your submission took place years ago in the name of "the war on terror"!

no need for this your submission took place years ago in the name of "the war on terror"!

In terms of personal freedom, I have yet to forfeit a single civil right under the Bush administration's conduct of the GWoT; which is against a real enemy that is actually killing people and has a stated objective of either killing me or putting me under the rule of people who butcher young children to teach their parents a lesson.

On the other hand, Catastrophic, Human-induced Global Warming is nothing but a fantasy. Yet, in order to fight this Phantom Menace, the environmental fascist want me to submit to complete dictate of what I eat, how I travel, where I live, whether I am allowed to reproduce, how much I am allowed to consume, what I drink, what I am allowed to say ... the only freedom the left isn't going after is the license to have sex with anything that moves. Which is really the only "freedom" they care about.

In other words, voice from Europe, your point is stupid.

HEIL OBAMA, MEIN FUHRER!!!

Just one question why does he appear white wih blood spattered all over the left side of his face?

Posted by: Anonymous at August 13, 2008 6:46 AM

We already live in a facist country. If you pay attention you will notice this. When you do not pay attention, you can not do anything about it!

Do something! Get involved! Are you aware of the dismantling of the constitution?

Are you aware that there are plans in place for martial law?

Posted by: Anonymous at August 13, 2008 10:45 AM

Anon, my wifes relatives lived in a fascist (please learn to spell) country. There are still one or two still living who have the tattoo to prove it. It gives them membership in the most exclusive club in the world.

To call the U.S. "fascist" only shows your ignorance and disrespect, not only for America but for those that actually know what fascism REALLY is.

You are a third rate rabble-rouser who thinks that reading the Daily Kos means you are well informed.

I hope you never have to find out what a fascist country is actually like.

Posted by: matt at August 13, 2008 6:53 PM

Well- said, Matt. I'd imagine those leftards' constantly referring to the U.S. as a 'Fascist' state is rather similar to the gangsta rap artists and their young African- American fans who constantly sling around the "N" word. Them being so proud of that word must be really hard for the older generations of blacks to hear and is really disrespectful to them, since some of them were around during the days of segregation and were called that vile name right to their faces by genuiune bigots who used that word to dehumanize them.

Posted by: Adam at August 13, 2008 7:34 PM

You know how to tell when you're living in a fascist state? It's easy: when you live in a fascist state, you can't go around spouting that you live in a fascist state. If you make that mistake, then you find yourself dying slowly and painfully in a fascist state.
Since leftist dimwits can still walk around in America, claiming to live in a fascist state, I must conclude that America is not a fascist state.
