German Town Imposes Solar Panels on Private Homes
The Nazis and communists are gone now, yet totalitarianism has returned to Germany. A report from Marburg:
The town council took the significant step in June of moving from merely encouraging citizens to install solar panels to making them an obligation. The ordinance, the first of its kind in Germany, will require solar panels not only on new buildings, which fewer people oppose, but also on existing homes that undergo renovations or get new heating systems or roof repairs.
To give the regulation teeth, a fine of 1,000 euros, about $1,500, awaits those who do not comply.
The fine is chump change compared to the cost of solar panels. Marburgers with leaky roofs had better buy some buckets, unless they have a fortune to spare.
If we've learned one thing from enviromania, it's that once the sanctity of private property has been breached, we have no rights. Therefore, there's no limit to the extravagant absurdity bureaucretins can impose.

Here in Florida, we get plenty of power outages from storms and a dozen or so years ago, the tempature fell into the 20s, causing an over-load of the electrical grid; so I would LOVE to have a solar panel charging up a bank of emergency batterys when the next hurricane hits.
BUT....
I don't want some over-paid politico telling me and my neighbors that we HAVE TO have one, OR ELSE!

This is what government bureaucracy does - makes even simple things ten times harder because of all the BS you have to go through to do anything. This is what moonbats do - introduce more BS without thinking about the consequences of their actions.
Let's suppose you live in a community that does something stupid like, oh, I don't know, require all buildings that undergo renovations to install hideously expensive solar panels as part of the renovation. Never mind that you just want to remodel the powder room on the first floor of your two-story house, all renovations require the installation of solar panels. Now lets suppose you want to renovate that powder room. Your options are:
1. Do the renovation, upping your $10,000 budget (or whatever) to $35,000 to include the solar panels.
2. Do the renovation, upping your $10,000 budget to $11,500 to cover the fine incurred by not installing the solar panels.
3. Don't do the renovation.
Most people will choose 2 or 3. In fact, if they require the solar panel installation per building permit or some such nonsense, then you will have to fork over $1,500 for every renovation you do that doesn't result in solar panels appearing on your roof, which will eventually result in most people choosing option 3. As people stop renovating and improving their property, what happens? Real estate values drop, or at least remain flat.
This is really nothing more than a veiled $1,500 tax on building improvements - my guess is this town won't cry too much over people choosing to pay the fine rather than save the polar bears. If anything makes sense to do, people will do it of their own accord. If the government needs to force people to do it, then it doesn't make sense to do.

Or some "improvements" might start slipping through without official recognition...

I want to see the bill for the solar panels to cover the roof of one of those beautiful cathederals. Oh wait... they'll get a religious or historical indulgence on it. What about the buildings in 'old town'? Is a 500 year old building with no easy way to install this crap going to get a pass or what?
Can you say Exodus? I expect this to start turning into a ghost town and/or rat pit slum very soon.

Dear Friend:
As you know I have the Republican and Conservatives ballot lines secured and we are now pushing to get a third line on November's ballot. The campaign needs volunteers this weekend and next for the final push for signatures for the Energy Security Now! petition. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, we have gathered thousands of signatures already. We have until August 18 to continue gathering signatures.
You and I know that John Hall has his MoveOn.org paid-for lawyers ready to fight the will of the people and try to keep us off the ballot. There is no way that Hall wants to allow the election to become a referendum on energy policy.
Casting a vote on the Energy Security Now! line will allow voters to say every solution to the energy crisis needs to be on the table.
You'll only have a chance to cast that vote if we collect the thousands of signatures needed to ensure Energy Security Now! a place on the ballot. Your petitioning efforts will be making a real difference in this election. To volunteer, call Mary Covucci at (914) 475-2627.
Best Wishes,
Kieran
