Forget Global Warming, Here Comes Oxygen Depletion
With the wheels coming loose on the global warming hoax, it's time for the Left to start hyping the next phony crisis. It shouldn't be hard to find something scarier than warm weather. The Guardian's Peter Tatchell is floating oxygen depletion:
Compared to prehistoric times, the level of oxygen in the earth's atmosphere has declined by over a third and in polluted cities the decline may be more than 50%. This change in the makeup of the air we breathe has potentially serious implications for our health. Indeed, it could ultimately threaten the survival of human life on earth…
The culprit is of course human civilization, which can only redeem itself by abolishing property rights and repealing the Industrial Revolution.
Now for a word from a grownup:
The reality is, of course, that the oxygen percentage in the atmosphere has been 20.94 or 20.95 percent for thousands of years and probably much longer than that (see the historical graph on page 2 of Dudley 1998 that covers 600 million years). The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is so huge that the biosphere (and fossil fuels which used to belong to the biosphere as well) is completely unable to change this amount significantly.
The notion that there is substantially less oxygen in cities than elsewhere is particularly absurd due to its rate of diffusion.
Nonetheless, we can probably look forward to new taxes to finance free scuba tanks for disadvantaged minorities.

Is it worth pointing out that the symptoms and effects of oxygen deprivation are well known, and that if this was really a problem we'd, you know, notice? Either leftists have a continual need for attention, or they just like the adrenaline rush that only panic can give you. Or else, they just like the power and influence that only widespread panic can give you.

Hey Coder, wait...wait one moment! You may be onto something!
Think about it: most liberals live in cities (where the oxygen is supposed to be down by 50%), right? The effects of hypoxia are confusion, disorientation, lack of reasoning skills, mild paranoia, disassociation, mild hallucinations...am I seeing a pattern emerge here?
Oh, the humanity...

LOL matt, but don't use SCIENCE as an argument.....

Since trees need CO2 to breathe perhaps our reduction of it would cause trees to produce less oxygen. Maybe we need to increase our CO2 output so there is more oxygen. My, my what a tangled web they weave.....

OT - speaking of lack of oxygen.....
Personally, Roseanne is one HollyWierd person who has always suffered from oxygen starvation, but, just not enough ‘starvation.’

"...Obama just wandered in from the rain forest with a bone thru his nose and a communist pamphlet in his loincloth.”
Actually, she's not far off, except he wandered in from the looney bin and the bone is in his head.

My apologies Van. I shoulda thrown that last post into the open tread......

A while ago I read that some enviro-tards were claiming that we were in danger from nitrogen pollution. This makes almost as much sense.

Where did this monobrow get his data from? James Hansen? Is this the oxygen hockey stick?
Posted by: chuck in st paul at August 18, 2008 2:34 PM
James Hansen, one of the biggest Ass Hat Civil Servants there is in NASA.
Heck, the whole govt for that fact.
If it were not for the worthless Union (yes, the civil servant union) that he hides behind.... there are a lot of his peers that would tar and fether him on the spot.
Hansen is a dumber ALGOR who hides behind education, which he is too stupid to use correctly. Money wasted.
Rant Off.....

I hesitate to mention this, but old Tatchell is a shirtlifter of the highest order, as well. In fact, he's probably as close to a perfect moonbat as you could find!

"Is it worth pointing out that the symptoms and effects of oxygen deprivation are well known, and that if this was really a problem we'd, you know, notice?" - CIC
Yes, but it will be too late by then, so we must overreact now now to address the oxygen crisis! I propose we further empower the UN to rob productive countries and companies and send what's left of the proceeds (after their cut, of course) to backward dictatorships. The more violently repressive the regime, the more proceeds they get, because we all know nothing stifles oxygen consumption like good old fashioned dictatorship. Islamic theocracies are preferred due to their efficient methods of dealing with decadent western-style oxygen greed, but regular thugs will do as well since this the oxygen crisis is so dire.
Oh, and remember, it's all our fault!
yarrgggh!

Take out all the sentences from the article with these words: "may be", "potentially", and "could" and what do you have left?

Oxygen shortage ?? I was really hoping for a gravity shortage. It would be so much more fun floating around in the air than gasping for air...

Peter Tatchell may be on to something. If I remember right from my high school biology class, a lack of oxygen will give you a black eye.

well I have to admit, I actually kind of like Tatchell. He may be an idiot loon and a self-publicising attention whore but, a couple of years back he tried to perform a citizen's arrest on Mugabe when he was in the country, and got beaten up by one of Mugabe's goons, which is where he got that black eye. That alone marks him as a very brave self-publicising attention whore...
Perhaps it knocked a few braincells loose. :D

Archonix,
Actually, Tatchell got the shiner at a gay pride parade in Moscow.

I think people may be interested in a debate between a representative of one of the worst alarmist groups (which attacks anyone who dares disagree with official doctrine on climate science saying they are funded by the fossil fuel sector) and a climate realist - see the following on our home page at http://www.climatescienceinternational.org/:
RADIO SMACKDOWN OF CLIMATE ALARMIST
