When you were in school (in my day) and were outside the norm, you were essentially a social misfit. You weren't part of the group. You didn't get picked to be on someone's team or included in some game on the playground...things of that nature.

Now, you had two choices: change your ways and fit in OR stay an odd-ball and remain a loner.

If you chose to be the outsider, fine. Up to you. The pressure made most of us hang with the group and become socialized (intra-personally, that is). Yep, we were still individuals, but we found out how to interact, help one another, be more giving...in other words, become good citizens.

Being spit on by someone who putatively had AIDS due to her sexual and intertainment values would consitute using deadly force. The response would have been quick and deadly from any of my buddies or myself for that matter. But then that's what her ilk did to our military generation. Some of them lived to regret it.

I'd imagine it was because the veteran and the others with him knew they had more tolerance, decency, and sanity than that hideous pile of street trash, so they didn't want to lower themselves to her level.
