First They Came for the Cats and Dogs

Retired game show host Bob Barker has decreed that all cats and dogs in Chicago must be spayed at the age of 6 months to prevent them from reproducing.

Barked Barker:

Overpopulation is one of the most tragic animal problems that we have in our country […] the only answer is legislation.

But even in left-leaning Chicago, he's met some resistance. Alderman Ray Suarez told the crusading has-been entertainer:

I don't like when the government tries to get involved in everything to solve problems. Right now we're starting with pets… What's the next step?

In light of strident calls from the increasingly powerful environmentalist movement to reduce the human population radically (see here, here, here, here, here, and here), I wonder too.

Any price is right when it comes to defending freedom from ever-encroaching authoritarians.

On a tip from Wiggins.

The surprising thing is that an alderman in the People's Democrat(ic) Republic of Chicago believes that there are things that the government has no business regulating. He must be a Democrat - Chicago gov't is a closed shop, after all - and I am amazed that he got as far as he has, thinking forbidden thoughts like that. Maybe there's hope yet.

As for the pet population, I can only say that I don't know of too many stories of packs of feral dogs or cats roaming the streets in any city. The occasional stray, sure, but it doesn't seem to be an epidemic.

A modest proposal: spay and neuter all the denizens of Hollywood. Sure, it would put the tabloids out of business, but it would help to chlorinate the gene pool a bit.

I don't like government getting in my business (and how!), and this does seem pretty over the top.

I will say, however, that until a fairly tough crackdown with the irresponsible pet owners here (L.A. area) we DID have packs of dogs running the streets. Our "undocumented migrant guest workers" keep pets in the same haphazard way as they keep up their property...that is, they DON'T. They get a dog, bring it home and basically let it run free...just like in the old country.

So while Barker is asking to TOTALLY regulate this issue, I hate to say there is a basis for it. That said, this is real low on the totem pole for me. Still, given that I don't want more Gov. regulations, how about letting the citizens use their firearms. Stray animal crisis solved, and motivation for "pet" owners to be more responsible.

Wow, Alderman Suarez, is this an "awakening" for you? As Coder noted, you must perforce be a Dhimmicrat if you're in the Chicago political structure (better start watching your back!), so for you to recognize the Stalinists (or "Statists," if you prefer) for what they are is truly a shock!

Keep up the good work (and the at-least-somewhat open mind). And best of luck with your next stand for re-election in your Democrat district (watch those kneecaps, bud!).

Why do you guys hate everyone?

Posted by: Anonymous at July 31, 2008 5:54 AM

Anony, we don't hate everyone. We're just sick of all the crap they're throwing at us. I have to live in Chicago, at least until my parents sell the house. Let me tell you, living in a town with a ten percent sales tax bites. People like Bob Barker who think "the only answer is legislation" are idiots. Trust me, the last thing this town needs is more legislation from the government telling us what we can and can't do. In the name of the common good, of course.
