Comedy Establishment Deems the Obamessiah Too Perfect to Laugh At

If the liberal elite is able to install its Affirmative Action post turtle in the White House, liberty, security, and our economic well-being won't be the only casualties. Humor will take a hit too.

Mike Barry, who has been writing political jokes for late-night comics like Johnny Carson and David Letterman since LBJ was in office, explains why nobody on TV cracks jokes about Obama:

The thing is, he's not buffoonish in any way. He's not a comical figure.

Adds Jimmy Kimmel of ABC's late-night Jimmy Kimmel Live adds:

You can't joke about him because […] he's so polished, he doesn't seem to have any flaws.

Unless there's no teleprompter handy…

Via Political Party Poop, here's something that might give TV scripters a few ideas:

But to moonbats, laughing at the Obamessiah constitutes blasphemy, which just isn't funny. Conservatives would get one thing out of this sacred absurdity being handed the Presidency: a monopoly on humor.

"He's not a comical figure."

That in itself is very comical.

The Messiah has peaked too soon, thanks to the protracted Democratic primary campaign. It's going to be difficult to keep up the religious frenzy at the same fever pitch until November. Obama fatigue will set in by then, I predict. McCain is taking exactly the right course now by keeping a lowish profile and letting the frenzy burn itself out.

Actually, the real reason they don't satirize him is for fear of being accused of racism. They're faced with two unpalatable choices: either deliver a lame joke at which no one laughs, or deliver a zinger and be accused of racism. No win proposition.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 15, 2008 12:38 PM

Jay, you're fooling yourself. This is what Invesco Field is going to look like on August 28.

And never underestimate the power of a fawning, complicit mainstream media.

Mr. Sweeney said, “We’re hoping he picks an idiot as vice president.”

I'll bet he gets his wish.

Posted by: forest at July 15, 2008 12:45 PM

Lyle, you may be right. That may have just been wishful thinking on my part. Still, considering the attention span of his acolytes, Obama may well go the way of Ricky Martin by November.

you people who give this man bigger than life status are MORONS......the man is laughable....mr flip flop flip flop.......he is as naive as they come...143 days in the senate does not a president make.....he couldnt lead us out of a paper bag.........be afraid...this guy is UNFIT TO SERVE...............

What's ironic is that after eight years of insisting that Bush is brainless puppet, the Democrats have nominated a brainless puppet.

Posted by: V the K at July 15, 2008 3:17 PM

That may be what they say, but if you really dug it out of them the more likely truth is that if they ragged on Obama they might never work in that town again.

Posted by: YardBird at July 15, 2008 4:30 PM

Jay and YardBird have it right. Make a joke? You're a racist (re: The New Yorker...although speaking of brainless, they had to be on MAJOR meds not to see Obamaniac Holy Indignation over that cover) or you'll be black listed (can we still use that term?) for betraying the party line.

I think normal, non-True Believer America is going to get awfully tired of His Holiness by election time.

Posted by: matt at July 15, 2008 4:54 PM

Yes, I'd say most likely that it's more due to fear of being accused of racism or something along those lines.
I especially feel this way due to Jimmy Kimmel's reaction, as he definitely has comedic talent and creativity. I remember "The Man Show" was easily one of the laugh- out- loud funniest shows I've EVER seen in my life during the years when he and Adam Carolla were hosting it (Before they left, and those talentless douchebags Joe Rogan and Doug Stanhope took over and ran that once- mighty show into the ground), so I know he could come up with some good routines about Obama pretty easily if he put his mind to it. He's probably just scared he might get sued or cancelled if he does so.

OT

Pretty funny: Congressional moonbats try to impeach Bush. Repubs look at the motion, realize they could help the Democratic congress drive its approval rating from 9 % to 0.01 % and say "Go for it! Impeach away!". Dems: "Uhm, maybe we need to think about this some more..." Repubs: "No seriously, we'd REALLY like you to conduct a public impeachment of Bush". Dems: "Ah, maybe next month...."

Obama: Funny, no -- pathetically boring and unable to speak a coherent sentence without his teleprompter and David Axelrod to write the speech for him, yes. Still, I fear you are right, Lyle, with all the drones who want "change" in the U.S. these days, no matter if that change brings devastation to the economy, our military (and therefore, our national security) and and our country as a whole.

You lib dweebs do understand, don't you, that there will be no drilling, no refining, no nuclear power and no research into anything that might help us out here, except for solar and wind (plus conservation and re-cycling, of course), all of which will not be of any real assistance for another twenty to thirty years, at least? Hope you're ready to ride 3,000 miles on your bicycle to leave N.Y. and visit your relatives in L.A. (actually, could be fun, if you've got several months and lots of bucks to spend "getting there"). Mighty sore butt, though . . .

What? The "liberal media" can't make fun of Obama? What do you call that offensive New Yorker cover you featured here just yesterday? You want it both ways?

At least Dan Quayle checks his facts and makes his points consistent. What does Dan have to say?

Posted by: Sybil Society at July 15, 2008 7:23 PM

"What? The "liberal media" can't make fun of Obama? What do you call that offensive New Yorker cover you featured here just yesterday?"

The New Yorker was attempting to make fun of "conservative smears" of Obama with that cover. the fact that most of the material actually came from Hillary's people or from Obama himself apparently didn't dissuade them.

They also didn't consider that some people might be so thick as to think they were actually making fun of Obama.

Posted by: forest at July 15, 2008 7:53 PM

If they fear a racial negative reaction, much like the fear of making fun of muslims, then lampooning his Obamatrons would be a rich source of alternative material.

Posted by: IOpian at July 15, 2008 8:23 PM

I have no trouble making Obama a source of humor.
Check out my blog if anyone wishes for " My Weekly Obama".

To me it's not a matter of race. He's just pompous enough you can't help making fun.

Posted by: Doug at July 15, 2008 10:17 PM

Sybil's right. Most of the slimy material the New Yorker used comes from right here at Moonbattery. I don't believe y'all are working for the Clinton campaign. (I don't believe y'all are working for the McSame campaign either.)

Expecting the MSM to make fun of Obama is like expecting the People's Temple to make fun of Jim Jones.

Posted by: V the K at July 16, 2008 2:12 AM

Sybil is wrong as usual, the New Yorker has stated they were not making fun of Obama, but making fun of all those who would mock the One True Obamassiah.

Posted by: V the K at July 16, 2008 2:16 AM

It seems that every time a "so called" attack on Obama occurs, he's like a bad television personality, his popularity among the masses without a brain goes through the roof!!! You think maybe that cover was paid for by the ObamaNation's campaign funds????? That is how you excite a moonbat, just make yourself the victim of something! The New Yorker is a left leaning publication after all. Just my thoughts on the "Cover Outrage". After all, Moonbattery thrives on victimhood.

Posted by: HoosierArmyMom at July 16, 2008 4:34 AM

Mark Morford's column that The Obama is a "Lightworker" of immense spiritual power, Spike Lee's statement that the election of The Obama would cause "a seismic shift in the universe," and the thrills that go up Chris Matthews's leg every time The Obama speaks... are far more ridiculous than anything the right wing has said about The Obama. Moreso because they were all dead serious.

Posted by: V the K at July 16, 2008 6:15 AM

"Spike Lee's statement that the election of The Obama would cause 'a seismic shift in the universe,'"

I don't know about that Spike, but it would definitely cause a seismic shift in my quarterly tax payments.

Posted by: forest at July 16, 2008 6:36 AM

He's not a comical figure.

I'd say the McCain campaign, at long last, is finally starting to show us Obama really is a comical figure.

"Who's yer Army Dad at July 15, 2008 11:21 PM"

You give us WAY too much credit. If Moonbattery had THAT MUCH influence, don't you thnk we would use it?
