Climate Cops

One of the most frightening aspects of the totalitarian dystopia depicted in George Orwell's 1984 is that parents have to live in terror of their bratty children, who are encouraged by authorities to spy on them and turn them in for minor transgressions against the State. Once again, liberals appear to have been using the novel not as a warning, but as an instruction manual. Watts Up With That reports on Britain's alarming Climate Cops campaign:

Launched today with large colour ads in the Sundays, it appeals directly to children, urging them to enlist as "climate cops", to root out "climate crimes" [PDF], and thus "save the planet".
In a luridly-designed website, mimicking the style of "yoof" cartoons, it offers a bundle of downloads, including a pack of "climate crime cards" [PDF], urging its recruits to spy on families, friends and relatives, inviting each of them to build up a "climate crime case file" in order to help them ensure their putative criminals do not "commit those crimes again (or else)!" […]
How nicely this ties in with James Hansen's call to put the chief executives of large fossil fuel companies on trial for high crimes against humanity and nature, accusing them of actively spreading doubt about global warming.

Climate crimes for which tykes are encourage to rat out Mom and Dad include:

  • "Leaving the TV on stand-by"
  • "Leaving a tap running"
  • "Using the tumble dryer on a sunny day"
  • "Leaving lights on in an empty room"
  • "Leaving a mobile phone charger plugged in"
  • "Putting hot food in the fridge or freezer"
  • "Not using energy-saving light bulbs"
  • "Boiling a kettle full of water for one cup of tea"
  • "Leaving the room door open on a cool day"

Not even Winston Smith had to deal with a form of totalitarianism so jealous of mankind's free will as to consider it a crime to leave the telescreen on standby.

If a foreign army tried to impose such rigid and idiotic restrictions on us, we would fight to the last man — or at least, there was a time when we would have. But since we are being conquered from within, by an army of clowns too absurd to take seriously, there is virtually no resistance.

Particularly alarming is that the Climate Cops campaign is not sponsored by the usual villain, the British Nanny State, but by the power company npower. Normally capitalism protects the public from encroaching authoritarianism, because powerful corporations serve as a counterbalance to overreaching governments. When the government and corporations read from the same playbook, the people are in trouble.

Just because moonbattery is absurd doesn't mean it can't hurt you.

On a tip from Lou.

A couple of generations ago, parents would've lectured their kids about leaving on the lights or TV when nobody was in the room, because electricity costs money - thus the kids got a basic lesson in capitalism. Now the kids are supposed to lecture the parents on behalf of the polar bears - thus the kids get a basic lesson in moonbattery.

Maybe this is one more reason Europeans just aren't bothering to have kids anymore. Who wants a live-in spy in the house?

'Putting hot food in the fridge or freezer.' This is a envirocrime now? I still get scolded if my mother sees me leave leftovers out for 10 minutes without putting them away. Of course her generation worried more about salmonella and botulism then envirocrime.

What is it with enviro-wackos circumventing the parents and going after the kids?

"What is it with enviro-wackos circumventing the parents and going after the kids?"

Kids don't know any better, they won't question a cartoon bear.

Yep, it's easier to brainwash kids. And being cowards, going after kids is a natural fit for these people.

Get them while they are young - except for adult leftists, they are more pliable, gullible, and easily led.

I'm comforted by the fact that when adults try to appeal to 'the kids' by mimicking what they think is 'cool,' the result is usually so lame the kids rebel against whatever the adults are preaching about.

A bunch of middle-aged white hippies in backwards baseball caps rapping about saving the environment is the best thing that could happen to derail the extreme environmental movement.

Off-Topic, but I thought it was interesting: Science Proves Capitalism Works, Moonbattery Fails.

Warning to trolls: The linked article uses lots of logic and big words that may be hard for you to understand. If these concepts confuse you, you should probably stick to reruns of 'Captain Planet' and gabbling speeches about 'hope' and 'change.'

Right out of the totalitarian playbook. Was it not Hilter who said, basically, if you're opposed to me, I'll just wait for you to die off, we've already got your kids so you don't matter anymore.

sorry "climate cops," your emblem is looking pretty lame. Might I suggest closer to the truth, something like this. Replace Ingsoc with climate cops, and badda bing, you got it.

Chris Hedges and other lefties can bemoan the spectre of “American fascism” from the religious right all they want. Ron Paul can cry all he wants about the “police state” that Bush, Cheney, Rove, and Co. have supposedly launched upon the unsuspecting American people. But this is the real fascism. The real imposition of one beliefs on the entire public, using their own children as easily controlled pawns.

And it’s coming from the Left. Surprise, suprise.

Jewish and Republican?? Oy gevalt

Is it just me or is this is a racist campaign? There are two white kids AND a white polar bear. Anything white should be outnumbered if we are to be PC.

"Using the tumble dryer on a sunny day"

In my community it is against statute to hand laundry outside. I know it is the same in many communities.

"Putting hot food in the fridge or freezer"

Doing this prevents the growth of bacteria that can make you sick or, worst case, kill you. But of course, if you're dead you can't kill anymore polar bears, so this point probably doesn't bother the moonbats any.

Ok. I post this everywhere I can:

"In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill…. All these dangers are caused by human intervention… The real enemy, then, is humanity itself."

"The First Global Revolution" (1991) published by the Club of Rome

If you don't believe it, the book can be found online. Look for yourself.
