State Bureaucrats Grow Fat on Gas Tax
If greedy socialist thugs really want to use high gas prices as a pretext to seize "windfall" profits, they might start by looting themselves — at both the federal and state levels:
The average state sales tax on gasoline is 28.6 cents a gallon, according to the American Petroleum Institute. That's a dime more than the federal gasoline tax of 18.4 cents a gallon.
In some states the tax is tied to the price you pay at the pump, driving the take ever upward:
California, which has the highest gas tax in the nation according to a survey by the American Petroleum Institute, would rake in $5 billion this year if the price at the pump remains at $4 a gallon. That's more than double the $2.1 billion the state took in gasoline tax revenue in 2003, state revenue officials said.
Despite his Big Government proclivities and hostility to a sane energy policy, McCain is at least calling for federal gas tax relief. But even further to the left, B. Hussein calls tax relief a gimmick.
Meanwhile, oil companies are still not allowed to avail themselves of the plentiful American reserves that could make gasoline affordable again, if only we could get the bureaucrats out of the way.

So happens that Obama is correct on that call.
Why?
Simple. McPain did NOT call for a reduction in the profligate/drunken-sailor SPENDING on highways--instead, he called for a reduction in the income stream necessary to support that spending.
Meaning that my children and grandchildren would pay to reduce gas prices by 18 cents/gal for 9 days or so.
It is, in fact, a gimmick.

It would be great if gas stations really had signs like that.
