Bloomberg Wants Still Higher Gas Taxes

Gas prices aren't too high — they're too low. But not to worry, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg knows how to fix the problem. Unsurprisingly, his solution is the same moonbats use for all problems: raise taxes even higher.

Bloomie explains his deranged conception of capitalism:

I think he [McCain] and Hillary Clinton couldn't both have been more wrong when they wanted to reduce the gasoline tax during the summer. They should be raising the tax and encouraging people to reduce consumption. The anti-tax people don't like that. But using capitalism to encourage the right behavior is exactly the [right] direction of going. Tax policy is the way government uses capitalism.

Actually, tax policy is the way government perverts, distorts, corrupts, and suppresses capitalism.

Remarks taxpayer Les Cox, interviewed at a Harlem gas station:

Bloomberg's a billionaire and has no idea what it's like out here.

The problem with us little people is that we don't want to let our betters decide how we should behave and what it's best for us to pay.

Actually, that sign is wrong. The profit is around 9 cents per $1 per gallon (7-10% profit margin for most oil companies) which comes to 36 cents for a full gallon. But that still less than 42 cents.

36 cents assumes a retail price of $4.00/gallon (.09 X 4 = .36)

You know what gets me, the free market is the most democratic institution possible - and these people that profess a deep love of democracy do everything they can to undermine this very democratic institution.

Folks, it's becoming more than apparent, it's BLATANT. These maniacs don't even try to hide it anymore. They want to kill capitalism, break the economy, topple the government and put Soviet-style socialism in it's place.

This stuff with higher taxes on gas at a time like this tips their hand for all to see. THIS IS PUNISHMENT for having been so prosperous and free.

Can you imagine a politician calling for higher taxes with gas at 5 bucks per? Even if he wanted it, you'd think he'd figure "well, we'll just keep this under wraps for now". But NO, they feel so "empowered" by the "Hate Bush, Hate Conservatives, Global Warming" movement, that they think they can get away with it.

If they take away your ability to have personal transportation, you've just lost a big chunk of your freedom. Private property, fire arms, personal savings and a lot more won't be far behind, comrads!

The important phrase here is:
"...encourage the right behavior."
As in brainwashing, or teaching some rat to ring a bell when it's hungry.

using capitalism is fine, but statist tricks and taxes is corporatism at best...

bloomberg just wants to be able to drive in manhatten wihtout being bothered by the little people.

in fact a lot of the elite now feel this way..

its the natural outcome of socailism

AP takes its philosophy to the inevitable conclusion:

everything sucks.

I seen gas stations now listing the gas cost, followed by its tax, and then the added total on the bottom. I think they're tired of being accused of gouging.

Not even close Anonymous, and a lousy attempt to make it look like the oil companies are sticking it to the little guy almost as much as taxes are.

Profit on a gallon of gas is always about 8-9 cents regardless of the cost per gallon. The major variable is the price of crude.

I know you won't bother to look, but for those interested in facts, the California Energy Comission has price breakdowns going back several years.

http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/margins/index.html#terms

It is instructive to note the relative constancy of Distribution/marketing costs and profits, and Refinery costs and profits over the years. As can be seen, the major contributor to cost is crude oil cost, followed by the various taxes.

N.B.: That is profits and costs above, Anonymous, so don't try to add them together and declare them to be profits. Also, that cartoon was from March 19, 2008, when gas was already pushing $4/gallon, so it is indeed correct.

I, your Supreme Leader, have deemed tourism to be the bane of mankind. This sort of behavior must be ended; it's the right thing to do. Therefore, we must end all tourism. Starting with New York City. What's say we institute a $100/night (minimum) hotel excise tax?

That was a good one mega. The funny thing is that the authors an editors probably honestly thought that was a good and balanced piece of journalism.

I'm pretty sure this was unintentional, but they did a good job of describing the struggle between sanity and moonbattery in this short paragraph:

"The can-do, bootstrap approach embedded in the American psyche is under assault. Eroding it is a dour powerlessness that is chipping away at the country's sturdy conviction that destiny can be commanded with sheer courage and perseverance."

I have a feeling they're betting on "dour powerlessness" to win this struggle, but I'm not.

I can't believe you folks aren't willing to pay $20 a gallon for gas, wipe your butts with one square of toilet paper, abort another 25,000,000 babies, become vegans, and kiss Algore's ass in order to save the polar bears.

Where's your compassion?

I soooo identify with that statement!

Jimbo:

I think my compassion comes out when I figure my bills and realize that with paying more at the pump and at the grocery store, I can't keep up with my bills and must get a parttime job to offset the increases! I drive an 86 mile round trip a day, pay taxes out the wazoo and now can work a parttime job so I can get gouged for more taxes, so Obamanation can get more entitlement programs to support people who don't want to work! I would sell my house and move closer to work, but unfortunately, it is no longer worth the amount I owe on it! I have thought about dumping the whole thing, getting sled dogs and a sled, along with a couple of horses and moving to Alaska lately! It just sounds better all the time!

The right thing to do would be to duct tape Bloomberg's mouth and throw him in the gator swamp.

Hoosier, just default on your mortgage and all will be forgiven. Then you can buy that new home closer to your job in no time!

Posted by: Pam at June 24, 2008 10:18 AM

Tax policy is the way government uses capitalism.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH! No it isn't! Tax policy is the way the government gets its "cut of the action." It's the way it tinkers with prices and supply-and-demand dynamics, often with little idea of what it is doing, or of what the consequences will be.

To borrow a phrase from TJIC: Rope.

Posted by: CoderInCrisis at June 24, 2008 10:45 AM

That sucks, HAM, especially since Indiana is one of the states on my short-lists of "places I'd rather live than frakkin' Maryland."

Pam dear, I have had to crawl over the rocks and out of the slime pit of liberal dementia once, I don't think I can ever go back there, but thanks for the idea! LOL!!! It got me chuckling! I'm just an angry, typical white woman, thumping on my Bible, and embracing my guns!

Actually V, now would be the time to relo here. In my town, 35 miles NE of Indy, there were about 1400 foreclosures in 2007, hard telling how many there are now. It's a buyer's market! And I do like our Republican governor. He seems to have the right priorities!
