When Is a Hate Crime Not a Hate Crime?

Posted by Dave Blount at April 5, 2008 8:02 AM

Question: How do you know when a brutal, pointless killing isn't a hate crime?

Answer: When the victim is a white guy, killed by blacks.

In the City of Brotherly Love, Sean Patrick Conroy, "known for his gentle, easygoing nature," was beaten to death on a SEPTA platform in Center City on Wednesday afternoon by a gang of teenagers.

The attack has been characterized as "random." According to Homicide Captain Michael Costello:

We have no reason why this occurred. We don't believe it was a robbery. Despite the speculation, there is absolutely no indication that it was any type of a hate crime.

The media is keeping a lid on the ethnicity of the killers, confirming what names like Ameer Best, Rasheem Bell, and Nashir Fisher would lead you to assume. Further confirmation comes from Keenan Jones, cofounder of Black Entrepreneurs and Rap United Together, who says he's worked with many of the killer teens involved, and lamely attempts to excuse their behavior.

If four whites publicly beat to death a "random" black, it would likely generate a little more concern.
