Lest We Forget

Yesterday was the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Ceremonies were held in honor of Marek Edelman, the last surviving commander of the rebellion. A short history lesson:

After invading Poland in 1939, Nazi Germany set up ghettos nationwide to isolate the country's Jews and facilitate the "Final Solution" — half of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust were Polish.
At its height, more than 450,000 were crammed into the walled Warsaw ghetto. About 100,000 died inside from starvation, disease and in summary executions. Most of the rest were sent to Treblinka in mass deportations which began in 1942.
In the ghetto, a handful of Jewish paramilitary groups, mostly made up of young people — Edelman was just 20 — coalesced into a poorly-armed force of around 1,000. The banner of one group was a blue Star of David on a white background, which caused Nazi ire when it was hoisted during the revolt. It became the flag of Israel. […]
The ghetto fighters first clashed with the Nazis on January 18-22, 1943, managing to hinder the deportations. On April 19, 1943, they took up arms again, as the Nazis moved to wipe out the remaining 60,000 ghetto dwellers.
"We knew perfectly well that there was no way we could win," Edelman told AFP in a recent interview. "It was a symbol of the fight for freedom. A symbol of standing up to Nazism, and of not giving in," he said. […]
Besides denting the Nazis' sense of superiority, the fighters managed to inflict some damage, killing and injuring a combined 300 troops.

Eventually the uprising was crushed by overwhelming force. Edelman was among a handful who survived by escaping through the sewers. The story makes it clear why Nazis didn't like for private citizens to have guns.

In related news, bitter, Bible-thumping Pennsylvania voters who cling to their guns might be interested in a report on Politico:

Barack Obama's presidential campaign has worked to assure uneasy gun owners that he believes the Constitution protects their rights and that he doesn't want to take away their guns.
But before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.
The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners' rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans. And it paid to support a book called "Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns." […]
In his appeal to gun owners, Obama has not emphasized his own legislative record, which includes supporting a ban on semiautomatic weapons and concealed weapons, and a limit on handgun purchases to one a month. He has blamed his staff for indicating on a questionnaire filled out during his 1996 state Senate bid under his name that he supports banning "the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns."

Race-obsessed statists do seem to have a problem with private citizens being able to defend themselves.

Kill me to get my gun, or get me thrown in prison for owning one. Since most libs are sissies, its obivious they picked the latter plan.

In other news, Greece experiencing immigration woes too.

I'm having a drink to Marek Edelman. It's hard to get your head around what courage the ghetto resistance took. To me, the point is not whether they were successful (they weren't), but that they tried.

It also puts into perspective the posturing of Code Pink type "warriors", who know very well that the Marines they taunt and throw things at protect them, rather than line them up and blow their brains out.

Lest our Second Amendment die with a whimper, may I suggest that gun owners make a point in the months before the election of taking a non-shooter to the range for some instruction? I took a liberal Democrat friend to the range last week to heat the barrel on my big, scary "assault rifle", and she had a blast. Sure, she'll probably still vote for Hillary or Obama, but at least she'll understand the opposing view. We have to educate those who are willing to listen about why gun rights are important.

Just to clear up some things, quite a few libs like guns (John Kerry's photo op in pressed brand new hunting gear comes to mind). But that is the flaw of libs, they want people to think guns are for hunting or whatever.

I personally dont own a hand gun for the record, but I like the idea of most of my neighbors owning a gun or at least a shotgun. I like to think of it like the vaccince herd immunity effect.

An excellent and inspiring story. Thanks for this.

I have been busy thumping on my Bible and lugging around my guns, so I didn't see the Politico article. Interesting how so many of the things that Obama trys to make people believe, simply doesn't match up with his record or history. But people still buy into him and his "empty suit, say nothing retoric".

If I knew I was destined to be "herded off to my death", I think having a weapon in with to make my final statement would be most important. It's hard to believe that there are so many, rather than trying to learn the lesson from what Hitler did in Europe, spew hate toward the Jews and deny it happened. It is unbelievable.
