Absolut Reconquista Fallout

Michelle Malkin has been collecting some of the fallout from Absolut's extremely ill-advised Reconquista ad campaign.

absolut_moonbattery.jpg

Here's a great letter that was emailed to Absolut suits in Sweden:

Absolut -
I run a bar in Pt. Richmond, California - where the Kaiser Liberty Ships were built during WWII. After seeing your ad Campaign where you show a western map of the United States in which California is part of Mexico again, I’ve decided to do the following…
1) Never carry Absolut. Ever.
2) Lower the price of Ketel One vodka to $2 a shot indefinitely to build loyalty.
3) Print a copy of your ad and put it above the Ketel One drink special.
4) Tell all my friends and family what Absolut thinks of the United States of America and our right to enforce border laws.
I am on the front line of illegal immigration and its effects. Where are you? Oh yes, Sweden.
Good riddance.
Sincerely,
Matthew Rogers
Pt. Richmond, Ca.

Needless to say, Absolut will never be seen again in the Van Helsing household. This won't be much of a sacrifice, since we've already discovered a superior alternative in Tito's Handmade Vodka, which is distilled six times, doesn't come in a prissy bottle, and best of all is made in Texas.

Try it on the rocks; it blows Absolut away.

On a tip from Burning Hot.

Thanks for the headsup Van. Anything made in Texas has to be hands down better than something made in Euro-Moonbatopia! EeeeHaaaaw!

"2) Lower the price of Ketel One vodka to $2 a shot indefinitely to build loyalty."

Randi Rhodes should be pleased, if she can bring herself to go to a bar owned by someone who doesn't hate America.

Tito's huh? I'll have to give it a try.

Posted by: forest at April 5, 2008 9:45 AM

I like my premium vodka. No more Absolut though, there are plenty of alternatives. I'm not even American (I'm British, although I have visited all the states involved apart from California and been made most welcome), and the advert disgusts me.

Posted by: Richard at April 5, 2008 9:59 AM

New bottle of Absolut down the drain. Best money I ever wasted. Dang but that felt good.

Posted by: rosie at April 5, 2008 10:10 AM

Keep in mind that Absolut was recently purchased by Pernod Ricard, a publicly-traded company based in France. Visit http://www.pernod-ricard-usa.com/ to see their brands sold in the US. You may reach Pernod Ricard USA at http://www.pernod-ricard-usa.com/contact/.

Shakers is an American vodka that is available most everywhere, and puts many of the vodkas people regularly drink to shame.

Good, good stuff.

Posted by: Winston Smith at April 5, 2008 12:23 PM

Thanks for the heads up. I keep a nice bar in my basement with plenty of vodka. I have never purchased Absolut, mainly Smirnoff or imported patatoe vodka. But I will definitely look for that Tito's.

Dumb Swedes

y'all realize this could have adverse effects?

yup.

millions of latinos within that border have given up tequila~in lieu of absolut!

WOOT - MORE FOR U.S.!

Dear God, one wishes these lib idiots, the Mexicans, the scum at La Raza and all their vicious ilk would get their history straight! No one "stole" the lands in the Southwest now subject to the (alleged) Reconquista; these lands are part of the United States of America, you morons, by means of victory at war and treaty -- if you want 'em back, you're going to have to fight for them.

Absolut,

Reference the “Mexican Ad”;

• It doesn't matter if it used to be Mexican territory. It’s been a collection of American states for well over a century now.

• Would Absolut have dared run a similar ad in Greece, depicting much of modern-day Turkey as still within Greece's borders? The Turks would sure love that.

• Or how about a campaign in Russia, showing the old USSR borders intact? I'm sure Baltic countries and nations like Georgia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan would just love that.

• How about a German campaign showing Germany's borders to include all of Hitler's Fortress Europe?

Unless you insult other nations equally, than you are clearly hostile towards ONLY the USA and it’s not funny. So go ahead, let's see you prove to us that "it's only a vodka ad" and run equally insulting and divisive ads other nations as previously mentioned. Go ahead, double dog dare you.

Bottom line, in the age of the Internet, there's no way to "hide" an ad campaign from ANY audience. If you running a campaign insulting an entire nation, they're going to find out about it.

I will never use Absolut products again, and I've encouraged friends and family to take the same stance. I hope Abosolut's sales plunge to nothing in the United States. Try to make up for it in Mexico.

Pissed off in the USA

Posted by: Absolut Boycott at April 5, 2008 6:50 PM

I can't believe Absolut would do that.
Certainly not going to buy that in the future, though it's really not a big sacrifice for me. I rarely drink at all, and I never drink vodka.

Posted by: Adam at April 5, 2008 8:03 PM

If only mexico sent tanks to our borders instead of untrained peasents. THEN we'd have a reason to attack.

Houston day laborers vote to form workers rights network
They National Day Laborer Organizing Network has groups in more than 20 cities

The ILLEGALS voted to demand FAIR PAY and WORKERS RIGHTS, but did not put PAYING TAXES on the UNION agenda.....But, they did hand out free ABSOLUT....before the vote.

Hey, a little good (?) news from the Morgage Meltdown...

Realtor stops immigrant loans

Best line in the article is:

'has largely stopped selling homes to people without Social Security numbers, often a sign that they are here illegally.'

YOU THINK?

All this anger over an advert? Dear God, get a life! The ad was aimed at the Mexican market, and as such, was funny as hell.

If the ad was run in the USA, and showed our borders bloated to include Canada, Mexico and Central America, you'd all be slapping each other on the back and yukking it up.

Your response to the Absolut ad reveals more about your simple-mindedness than it does about the taste of the advertiser.

Posted by: ChuckL at April 6, 2008 12:37 AM

Chuck

You're just making that up. On what basis do you say "[we]'d all be slapping each other on the back and yukking it up"?

Absolut Boycott

Many more examples than that - England in France and Ireland might be contentious. However the one they really should try is a mad of Scandinavia with the old Swedish Empire. How would that go down with their neighbours?

Posted by: Richard at April 6, 2008 3:48 AM

Fox News headlines this morning says Absolut has apologized. No time to read it, but here is the link: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,346964,00.html

I'm afraid the bad taste left in my mouth will remain.

Posted by: rosie at April 6, 2008 5:24 AM

To ChuckL: If you don't have an ounce of indignation for such a blatantly insenstive ad during a time of invasion, you got problems, bud. You need to get more than a life, you need to get a four wheel drive conscience. Don't forget to ask for a few principles to go with it. Ask about the red, white and blue package. A GPS system will help guide you as you go from your current stupor to patiotic passion. Always keep your windshield clean and your vision will never again becomes so limited, hindered by all your smug.

Posted by: ANON at April 6, 2008 5:42 AM

ChuckL - if it's just an advert, then let's see Absolut run an "All White Absolut USA"; or a "No Gays Allowed in the US of Absolute". Then we'll see who pitches a fit and who tells everyone to get a life and stop being so simple-minded. Putz.

Posted by: Texan at April 6, 2008 6:13 AM

Grain vodka is better than potato vodka any day...

Like I said in the previous thread, I'm drinking Lake Vättern Svensk instead, now, since it tastes better.

UCA, I agree with what you say, but this:

Dumb Swedes

... is it really necessary? You can get the point across quite admirably without having to call people dumb.

Posted by: Archonix at April 6, 2008 6:23 AM

Add this Photoshop job to the pile of those spoofing the Absolut ad.

You're about a century behind Manifest Destiny! And if we had any wackos with those delusions, we certainly wouldn't pander to them!

More sighs of Global Warming across great swaths of the UK.

Snow has fallen across much of the UK overnight, with forecasters warning that there is likely to be more later.

How is this for a forecast.....(with the mandatory hint of Global Warming thrown in to boot)

He forecasted intermittent snow showers, between spells of sunshine, in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Mr Fawkes said temperatures in large towns and cities are set to fall to as low as -2C.

"This makes it a very cold day for April. It follows on from the warmest day of the year so far on Thursday, in Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire, where the temperature was 18.9C," he said.

Idiots.

Posted by: Oiao at April 6, 2008 10:48 AM

I noticed that at the Ministry of Truth website today too. Kinda funny how they always manage to get in a global warming reference when there is hot weather or a hurricane, but no mention of it in this article.

Although this comment was close: "follows on from the warmest day of the year so far on Thursday"

April 3rd was the warmest day of the year so far? Well that's just shocking! April is warmer than January, February and March - let's alert the rest of the media and cut our carbon footprints immediately!

I find it funny thaty the US paid over 20 million for the Gadsden Purchase, the land of Guadelupe-Hildago.

We spent that much on the Louisiana Purchase.

Posted by: Sean M at April 6, 2008 4:28 PM

Archonix,

I'm just a simple old Polak.
And we Polaks have been called worse then dumb.
Heard any good Polish jokes?

Posted by: UCA at April 6, 2008 5:04 PM

UCA, I prefer Irish jokes. :) I'm just hypersensitive at the moment, a lot of people have been calling swedes names well beyond the usual "swedes vs denmark" stuff I've seen, for no reason that I can discern. My wife is swedish. It makes for... "interesting times".

Posted by: Archonix at April 7, 2008 3:25 AM

$10 million for the Gadsen Purchase is still a good deal though at the time the need for a rail line and the real estate value of Tucson far exceeds that amount even adjusted for inflation. The land would sell for way more than that today even after adjusting for inflation. Though $7 million for Alaska was a steal. And the $23 million for Lousiana was an even better deal.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 7, 2008 6:47 AM

Hey Archonix,

Ever see Nash Bridges? Cheech Marin plays an old, bald cop with a good looking Swedish wife. Tall and blonde of course.
Are they really tall and blonde beauties?

Posted by: UCA at April 7, 2008 8:15 AM

I have a Swedish uncle who is a disbled veteran.
He has been in a wheel chair for over 35 years.
Now he is closing in on 80 years old and the doctors said he would never make it to 55.
Guy just keeps on truckin'.

I was actually very surprised at Wikipedia's openly anti-conservative attitude about this. Their "gatekeepers" act as if it's a known fact that wiki is a liberal site and non ant-American views are not welcome and are viewed as extreme right-wing. They openly recommend suppressing the truth if it doesn't support their left-wing agenda.

More than the foolish Absolut ad, this was an eye-opener about wikipedia.

Posted by: NudeGayWhalesForJesus at April 9, 2008 9:51 PM

And for the record, wikipedia did NOT present a fair and balanced addition to the absolut entry regarding this ad campaign. What they did was present an anti-Michelle Malkin paragraph.

If the entry was about Michel Malkin, that's one thing, but the entry is about Absolut and yet they present it as if it's a story simply about some extremist right winger who didn't like some innocuous ad.

Once again, all about the messenger and little about the message.

Posted by: NudeGayWhalesForJesus at April 9, 2008 9:54 PM

I'm a vodka drinker. I won't buy absolut anymore and I emailed all my friends to do the same. But I'm just too pragmatic not to drink it if it's already bought. Damn, if I could have all the absolut people spilled down their toilets I could be drunk for a month.
