United Nations Stifles Free Speech
Hypocritical, but hardly surprising:
Reporters covering the United Nations complain that the organization, whose Universal Declaration of Human Rights calls for freedom of the press, has been trying to stifle reporters covering the U.N. itself.
The U.N. does have a lot to hide:
In recent years, the United Nations has come under fire for corruption scandals, including allegations of bribery in the oil-for-food program, sexual abuse by U.N. relief workers, and, more recently, U.N. money allegedly ending up in North Korea's missile development program.
A favorite tactic for staving off reporters digging into its many scandals is for the U.N. to declare that there's an ongoing investigation, using this as an excuse not to answer questions. Since the investigations entail corrupt U.N. bureauweenies investigating themselves, they go around in circles until the coast is clear, then quietly die.
It's not as if reporters can utilize the Freedom of Information Act; the U.N. is above the laws of the mere nations it aspires to supplant.
Beatrice Edwards of the Government Accountability Project remarks on the U.N. and other international bodies:
If they are able to shut down free press or free speech inside, to the extent that they often try to, then we are really talking about very powerful, very wealthy, lawless organizations.
In a world controlled by the U.N., freedom of speech would disappear even faster than private property. Yet American taxpayers keep feeding it, like a pet baby crocodile that will grow and grow until it isn't a baby or a pet anymore.

On a tip from Oiao. Hat tip: Pirate's Cove.
