Snuffing Out the Lights in San Francisco

Taking effective action based on liberals' demented beliefs would result in catastrophe. Fortunately, they are often forced to settle for symbolism. Nothing could be more symbolic of where progressives would like to take us than snuffing out the lights that in turn symbolize mankind's triumph over the darkness:

San Francisco's picturesque skyline would be dark at night under a first-in-the-nation law proposed Tuesday that would mandate all skyscrapers turn off nonemergency lights after work hours. […] Under the proposal, energy-wasting scofflaws would face fines for each floor where lights are on, with $50 for the first infraction, $100 for the second and $250 for any subsequent violation. The proposal would also require businesses undergoing major renovations to install devices that would automatically turn off lights when nobody is in a room.

Ken Cleaveland of the Building Owners and Managers Association of San Francisco points out that any businesses wasting electricity are already being fined by higher electric bills, and that 90% of them in the city's downtown area are small businesses that can ill afford more government greed. But that doesn't change the fact that they are capitalist oppressors who must be punished for the sake of the polar bears.

For added symbolism, San Franfreakshow will participate in Earth Hour on Saturday, by encouraging people to turn off lights for an hour to help them envision a world without humans, on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund.

Korea: South run by capitalists, North run by moonbats. Light = civilization.

Where did you get this picture of Korea? Is it real?

Posted by: shunha7878 at March 27, 2008 7:21 AM

shunha7878,
The picture's been floating around, I got it from Stuff You Can Use. As far as I know it's genuine.

North Korea pretty much is the Move-On/Soros model for what a nation-state should be, except they want it on a global scale.

"North Korea pretty much is the Move-On/Soros model for what a nation-state should be, except they want it on a global scale." - V the K

Sounds great! I call dibs on the wallpaper paste.

Posted by: forest at March 27, 2008 7:47 AM

Yes, it's real. North Korea is so advanced that they only have power generation during the daytime hours. Meanwhile, South Korea, which started with a virtually identical culture and resources became an economic powerhouse of SE Asia. Isn't communism grand?

There's a movie available from Netflix called Inside North Korea which gives a stark look at this repressive society. It should be required viewing for all school children, but no, they are forced to watch An Inconvenient Truth instead.

They also hate it when pesky firetrucks use their sirens and air horns. I mean, come on, like it's an emergency or something.

Posted by: V the K at March 27, 2008 9:14 AM

They just plain hate civilization.

Posted by: mandy at March 27, 2008 9:28 AM

There's hardly any humans in San Francisco as it is - it should be easy for them to imagine none at all.

And they're ALREADY in the dark. The last light bulb to come on there was the bright idea to get the f*ck out.

Is that the WWF founded by Julian Huxley, the ardent eugenicist? I think it might be.

Posted by: Ian from the EUSSR at March 27, 2008 11:49 AM

Man, it's getting harder to be a TRUE CONSERVATIVE all the time. We're FOR WASTING ELECTICITY now??

I've got those motion activated light switches all over my office -- less than $20 bucks apiece at Wal-Mart. But THE WINGBATS HAVE SPOKEN -- I'll rip them out right away.

Using electricity to light a dark building makes sense, I guess, because it means America's CONTINUED DOMINANCE in using more energy per capita, which means less energy for China and other upstarts.

That's it -- we'll keep the world price of energy as high as possible. So what if the money goes to Saudi Arabia -- they're our BEST FRIENDS. We just need to keep them from exporting hijackers is all.

Burn your lights for the American economy!

"Quayle" also doesn't know anything about office buildings (I do, I did building services engineering in a former life) if he thinks they can have the lights switched on and off by 20 buck motion activated switches from Wal-Mart.

Posted by: Texan at March 27, 2008 8:01 PM

Ian from the Eastern USSR,

Here's a link to some good motion sensor switches for as little as $14 each:

Man, you could do a whole San Francisco office building for less than $2000 bucks!

But let's keep it our little secret -- we wingbats want to USE energy, not CONSERVE it.

What kind of cool SUV do you drive? Is it as inefficient as my Excursion? I bet not!

You don't have any concept of the scale of commercial electrical installations, have you Quayle? You really have no idea of the lighting load, I'll bet, or how many circuits there are, etcetra. But then, you don't know anything about electrical installation, do you?

Neither, I suspect, have you any understanding of the practicalities of office services. For instance, have you ever wondered what happens in an office with PIRs when people sit still at their desks, typing? Here's a clue: the answer is "the lights keep going out".

I actually had to tell somebody in a meeting room once, when they angrily asked how the fuck they could keep the lights on, to "stand up and wave every 30 seconds".

Fact is, everywhere I've worked there's a great deal of thought put into reducing energy bills for entirely economic reasons. But the buildings also need to be practical. If there are people about, which in most big buildings there are 24/7 (believe it or not, cleaners, engineers, security guards, delivery people etc can't do a very good job in pitch darkness, and that excludes office workers, traders etc working all hours) then you need the lights on.

That's the problem with lefties. Most of you have never worked in the businesses you criticise and have no sodding concept of reality. Half of you have never worked at all. Go find out some stuff before posting rubbish.

Posted by: V the K at March 28, 2008 7:05 AM

Ian from the European Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,

Sorry to get you all excited. This is clearly something you're highly sensitive to. But I'm on YOUR SIDE on this.

Liberals may claim that you can get these motion sensors to have timed shut off of 30 or 60 minutes or more, but I'll trust your knowledge that the only ones on the market shut off the lights every 30 SECONDS.

Maybe we should be promoting this. You paint an amusing thought picture of greenie San Francisco businessmen getting up every 30 seconds to flap their arms like chickens.

Man, I can't wait to see that on YouTube!

In that instance, which as I'm sure you're aware, I brought up for humourous effect, it was a new installation that the contractors had set incorrectly. Nonetheless, the principle applies.

But you haven't addressed the main point with your boneheadedness. You're applying a simplistic knowledge of domestic electrics (a plug in thing from Wal-Mart) to huge commercial installations the understanding of which is entirely beyond you, and to buildings and businesses the actual workings of which you have no understanding of whatsoever.

Now, you go back to your imagined terror of the coming apocalypse and your cultic scaremongering, while the rest of us get on with the economic development that makes the world a better place. You carry on campaigning to keep the poor world in poverty, starvation and degradation while the rest of do our bit for progress.

Try going and living like the poor one day, "Dan". Sit in the dark, or with just the light of a reeking fire of animal dung, watching your children starve as the crops fail and fat, wealthy lefties cheer at your sacrifice for Gaia. Then maybe, just maybe, you'll understand what an evil Greenism truly is.

Posted by: Ian from the EUSSR at March 28, 2008 1:29 PM

Ian from the EUSSR,

Man, I've been involved in a clash of ideals before, none of which have attained the scale of importance of commerical lighting installations.

Sure, I don't do commercial lighting designs. But I assume it IS possible to put in workable motion sensors. Sounds like we agree.

But "imagined terror of the coming apocalypse"? WTF, dude. Are motion sensors going to cause an apocalypse? Or prevent one?

And "cultic scaremongering"? Did I suggest your immenent demise? Are you afraid of my powerful SUV? Is it bigger than yours?

And then it gets weird.

You suggest I "carry on campaigning to keep the poor world in poverty, starvation and degradation", causing the poor to "sit in the dark, or with just the light of a reeking fire of animal dung, watching your children starve as the crops fail and fat, wealthy lefties cheer at your sacrifice for Gaia".

I had no idea that motion sensing light switches could cause so much harm.

But I get it. Rather than do low cost things that might save energy and resources, we should INCREASE DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION 50% to keep those lights burning and the Excursion fueled, while INCREASING WORLD ENERGY PRODUCTION TEN FOLD to bring the Third World up to Western standards.

Yes, yes! Access to energy is THE critical factor in creating a sustainable world. We need to take a more holistic view of environmental problems and do what is necessary so that all countries can develop the resources needed to achieve Western consumption standards.

This means accepting the fact that the main sources of HUMAN SUFFERING and pressure on the environment and resources come from POPULATION GROWTH, OVERCROWDING, AND POVERTY. Improving living standards through access to abundant energy for everyone is the only lasting way to alleviate these pressures.

Here's how it works:

Modern man is the only species that reacts to improved living standards by VOLUNTARILY REDUCING PROCREATION. This surprising fact should be the cornerstone of our decision regarding the environment.

Carbon dioxide released by the combustion of fossil fuel is most conveniently vented to the atmosphere.

If the atmosphere proves to be a relatively small reservoir of carbon, or is particularly sensitive to the addition of more, let's use the ocean reservoir of dissolved carbon dioxide which is fifty times larger than the atmosphere and can easily absorb much more.

As it has for billions of years, the carbon dioxide dissolved in oceans will precipitate to create carbon formations and subsea sediments that sequester huge quantities of carbon.

But well before we overtax the oceans, ABUNDANT ENERGY will cause a VOLUNTARY REDUCTION IN HUMAN PROCREATION, ultimately resulting in lower energy use and environmental impact.

You blew my mind.

I going to go buy some Halliburton stock.

No, Quayle. "Positive thoughts" aren't enough. You need practical ideas. I pointed out that your lack of knowledge of the subject you're discussing renders you unable to appreciate the practicalities of it. Engineering is a matter of practicalities, not sloganising. The far greatest proportion of energy usage in modern office buildings is in HVAC, and a lot of effort is spent reducing the load. Lighting is a campaign of the anti-western movement because it's visible and thus understandable to the mass of the people, and it can be easily portrayed as indicative of sinful profligacy. And of course because civilisation is associated with light(s); always has been, and civilisation is what the people you support wish to bring down. But in practical terms the lighting load is relatively trivial. To get an impression of that, consider an ordinary domestic room; heated by a 3000W electric heater and lit by an 18W fluorescent lamp.

Your "satire" is tiresome and wearying. Go away and learn something of the matters on which you speak. You'll be a better person for it, believe me.
