Environazis Gun for Video Games

As with all totalitarian ideologies, environmentalists expect absolutely everything to comply to their dogma — right down to video games. Those who enjoy them will find a recent AFP report ominous:

Worldwide computer use requires 14 power stations for the necessary electricity, producing more harmful [sic] carbon dioxide emissions than the entire airline industry — not including the emissions created [from] manufacturing and shipping around the products in the first place.
And games consoles — of which 62 million were sold in last year — are the gas guzzlers of this industry, using huge amounts of energy to generate the necessary mindblowing graphics and sounds.
When played online, they are linked up to huge server farms which use even more energy.

Greenpeace deployed troops to the German IT fair CeBIT "vowing to sort the 'greenwash' from the genuine amid all the talk of green IT." It finds the gaming industry to be politically impure:

Nintendo provided no data for the investigation on its Wii console, Microsoft said they had no information, and Sony's details on the PlayStation were "very late and very insufficient," Greenpeace campaigner Zeina Al-Hajj said. Greenpeace suspects this speaks volumes.

Enjoy your XBox while you can. If environmental hysteria continues, it won't be long before Zeina Al-Hajj et al. have the political leverage to take it away.

Accused of environmental incorrectness.

Those enviro-wackos better be careful...wouldn't the gaming crowd be a huge % of their potential support?

why are we not bombing peta, elf, and greenpeace out of existance

Posted by: furballz at March 8, 2008 10:25 AM

Time to turn on the playstation. Maybe leave it on for a few days.

Posted by: FREE at March 8, 2008 10:35 AM

You can have my Xbox 360 and my Wii when you pry them from my cold dead fingers.

Posted by: jcebern at March 8, 2008 10:52 AM

I had initially vowed never to touch the XBox or the PS3 for various reasons but now I'm tempted to buy at least three of each and leave them running all day.

If a prosecuting attorney used this sort of logic, he would be accused of violating the defendants rights. Apparently , if you produce a legal product, you have less of an expectation of a presumption of innocence than someone caught with pipe bombs and a copy of the Unabomer manifesto. God help us if these people ever attain real political power.

If anyone tries to take my wii or ps2, I'll kick their ass. And then I'll play wii boxing and emit a ton of carbon just to spite them.

I'll link to this.

This is unbelievable.

What a great way unbrainwash little moonbrats who come home from socialist indoctrination centers (aka public schools) and try to shame their parents with Gaiaist proaganda. Just say, "Okay, Saffron (or Tyler, or Jeremy). Since you're so concerned about the bloody polar bears, I guess you'll be happy to give up your Wii and all your other tech. Or, you can shut up about my SUV. Your choice."

If server farms are a problem, then Google absolutely has to go. They are the ultimate server farm.

Being the stronghold of liberal ideology that they are, though, Google will never be a target.

Posted by: ent at March 8, 2008 12:12 PM

Well, they're a product of progress, which is why "progressives" loathe them so.

Have you noticed that strange thing about the left, the way everything they believe they are is the precise opposite of what they believe? They call themselves progressive, but despise progress. They call themselves liberal, but are profoundly authoritarian. They call themselves anti-racist while spewing furious racist bile. They call themselves pacifist, while glorifying violence and murder in the name of ideology.

Strange bunch, the Left.

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" - Isaiah 5:20

Posted by: V the K at March 8, 2008 12:29 PM

Isaiah 5:20? What game is that? Obviously, I'm not well versed in Wii or XBox but as soon as they come out with game titles like, "Whale - the Other Red Meat", "ACLU Skeet", and "Alien & Predator v. Baby Seals", I'm onboard!

I think Greenpeace will regret this decision.

Posted by: tfhr at March 8, 2008 1:51 PM

When I saw the title of theis artical, I thought "the greens" were putting out their own video game! Can you imagine it? Torpedoing whaling ships, a "Wack-A-Mole" style game where you have to punch holes in the ice so the seals can breath, a "Sims" game where your characters have to live a "green" lifestyle.....
I'm getting a headache just writiing this!

Posted by: KHarn at March 8, 2008 3:43 PM

Greenpeace.

What a joke.

Posted by: Jimbo at March 8, 2008 3:52 PM

Remember folks, it was Tipper Gore and her ilk that lead the charge first against Dungeons & Dragons (Satanism, remember) then against Rock & Roll (Prince sucks, but damn, its our fucking ears, let us listen to what we want) and then againt video games like Grand Theft Auto (never mind that parents need to be responsible and not buy their kids M-rated games). Now, because all those campaigns have failed in one form or another they think up another one: Videogames cause Global Warming.

::gives the middle finger salute::

Fuck you Greenpeace, lying, fatuous, greedy, Neo-Luddite fucktards. I hope every single one of you assholes that thought this shit up get bitten on the dick by a rabid squirrel.

Green-chic is a mess.

First, electronic companies were forced to remove lead-solder from their products, yet this move does nothing to promote recycling. Plus some non-lead solders are silver base, and silver is an eco-toxin.

Then there are those who have pushed the "save the tree" mantra and requesting/urging us to read magazines and conduct business on-line. Heck, trees are a crop and a renewable resource. I recall one article a number of years ago about someone who felt good about himself because he played Monopoly on-line instead using the board version made out of paper.

There is an environmental trade-off with electronics, if this folks want to be consistent. Just like those who think they are doing better than the rest of us because they drive "eco-friendly" hybrid vehicles. Yeah, eco-friendly my foot. Those vehicles are not grown and harvested from trees. They are manufactured from raw materials extracted from the earth and processed using energy intensive techniques. Reminds me of those "green" politicians and activists who live in mansions.

dpt - "Reminds me of those "green" politicians and activists who live in mansions."

I used to walk directly in fron of the Sierra Club world headquarters in San Fran Freako, every day to and from work. (I rode the train and walked the balance of the commute.)

While Sierra Club rabidly avocates public transportation and bicycles - the hypocrite bastards who run corrupt "club" all drive their 12 cylinder Jaguars into the City and park in their private parking spaces. Man! Those guys spend membership dues wisely, huh?

Liberal=hypocrite.

Wow. Arguing on BEHALF of video games.

Why Americans can't build a decent vacuum cleaner, much less a car.

(And why China has you by the balls, but that's another story.)

Sniff... sniff...

gawd - what's that awful smell?

Posted by: Jimbo at March 8, 2008 11:15 PM

Sometimes... the truthers smell funny.

Posted by: monsterforge at March 9, 2008 2:28 AM

So, how long before the "climate change" crowd teams up with the "video games are evil" crowd? Whoever coined the phrase "politics makes strange bedfellows" probably never imagined the sort of lunacy that would pervade the halls of Congress.

Posted by: Targetpractice at March 9, 2008 2:58 AM

Oy.
First, games come under fire (No pun intended) for violent content by the likes of Tipper Gore, now they're coming under fire from the eco- freaks.
I currently have just a regular Xbox, but if I had more money, I'd definitely go for a 360 or maybe a Wii.

Posted by: Adam at March 10, 2008 7:12 AM

If they are going after video games, then let's add other forms of electronic entertainment into the mix.

How about a $100 tax on all electronics sold over $500 and a $50 tax on all under $500?

Tax each DVD rental and all music/video downloads at $10 per each.

"First, games come under fire (No pun intended) for violent content by the likes of Tipper Gore, now they're coming under fire from the eco- freaks."

They came under fire from freakazoid homo-hating conservatard former radio host Kevin McCullough far more recently, but it's interesting how your selective memory left his name out of your rant...

"I currently have just a regular Xbox, but if I had more money, I'd definitely go for a 360 or maybe a Wii."

Dare to dream, Adam. The future of America...
