Britain Starts Banning Fire Extinguishers

The coercive infantilization of the British populace has reached another milestone. Private citizens are forbidden from using weapons to defend themselves, so that if attacked by criminals they must submit to their fate in hopes the authorities will come rescue them. Now this mentality has been extended to fire extinguishers, which authorities are beginning to ban:

The canisters could be dangerous if people use them without training, risk assessors said. And they could encourage people to stay and tackle a blaze rather than flee. The Fire Service is backing the ban — which could be brought in across the country under new rules.

Mike Edwards lives in a 10-storey building where fire extinguishers will no longer be permitted. He comments:

The Fire Service can't quickly get their equipment above the eighth floor — so if someone is trapped they are now just expected to sit and burn.

Better whole buildings should go up in smoke than people should take matters into their own hands. Who knows what independent notions they might develop?

Britain has bypassed Orwellian totalitarianism and gone straight to a parody of it.

Next up for a British ban.

Of all the intensely stupid things I've read about lately, this one wins the grand prize... I'm speechless.

Posted by: PabloD at March 12, 2008 10:04 PM

is it possible to place a entire country up for a darwin award?

Posted by: Mick at March 12, 2008 10:20 PM

Damn near sounds like a labor union deal.

Posted by: Jimbo at March 12, 2008 10:25 PM

OK, This is the stupid most thing I've seen!

Why stop at the cannisters? They need to outlaw the use of the Fire Alarms.... That way people will just lay in their beds awaiting death or rescue.

Add in that the socialized medicine in the UK is totally fucked.... I think the Fire Brigades will get bonus pounds to not rescue people....

This is way off the scale of sanity.....

Citizens of the UK, if you can drag your arses out of the pubs long enough, wake up and kick the LP out of office........

Hey, it's your F'n funerals....

Oiao, kicking out zanu labour wouldn't make a blind bit of difference, now. This ban more than likely stems from an EU directive, which means that any party in power would have to implement something similar no matter what they actually thought of it. Housing regs are an EU "competence", you see.

What pisses me off is that they don't actually acknowledge this. They pretend they're the source of it all for some insane reason... if people knew where it all actually came from they'd be rioting. Oh well, doesn't matter now. The EU got a legal personality l;ast week and our government voluntarily relegated itself to provincial status.

I'm telling you. Five years. Revolution. Buy stock in rope companies.

Oh. I thought they were objecting to all that evil carbon dioxide used in the extinguishers. Global warming; you can't be too careful.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 13, 2008 3:04 AM

Its only a matter of time before Fire Engines carry lighter fluid instead of water and firemen start burning books and houses (purchasing offsetting carbon credits of course).

Posted by: Anonymous at March 13, 2008 4:28 AM

It's about time. All you Rightwing thugs use them for is extinguishing the bongs I smoke in my mother's basement.

People shirk their responsibilities one by one, because it's easier to let someone else take care of their responsibilities. But people never seem to realize, without an individual's responsibilities there are no individual rights. The two are inseparable, and interchangeable. It used to be called citizenship, it is no longer taught.

It starts with things like educating your kid and then moves on to things like healthcare, defense of your person, and before long you have no individual rights at all. PC speech is the worst of the bunch, because it for the most part political speech, the only kind protected by the US Constitution.

Womb to the tomb, be happy in your communist swaddle.

When I was a foster parent in South Carolina, the state required me, as part of my license, to keep fire extinguishers in the home and have them inspected and charged. When I moved to the moonbat-infested state of Maryland, I was told to forget about fire extinguishers, because that state's policy was to flee from fire and wait for fire trucks.

As moonbattery goes up, concepts of personal responsibility go down.

I am looking at a potential job in Charleston, SC.
Hope it is still a red state. Pretty bad when career choices must be made according to whether or not a state has "moonbat infestation". I just don't want to end up in jail! LOL!!!

Tell me about it, Hoosier Mom. My current career goal is to move away from the East Coast and back to America. Wyoming would be my dream state, but I will probably have to settle for Tennessee, Nebraska, or maybe Idaho.

"When I moved to the moonbat-infested state of Maryland..." - V the K

Maryland isn't as notorious as Taxachusetts or Vermont, but it's just as bad. It costs a fortune in time and money to get anything productive done there due to all the regulations - especially compared to the neighboring state of WV. I had an engineer recently turn down a good bit of work simply because it was in MD as opposed to PA or WV. If the D's get there way, the whole country will end up that bad - or worse.

Well, anyway -

"The canisters could be dangerous if people use them without training, risk assessors said.

And they could encourage people to stay and tackle a blaze rather than flee."

The word "training" gives me a chill here. And are there any fire fighters reading? Isn't the most important factor in avoiding disaster to fight the fire when it's still small? One person with an extinguisher can put out a fire that could be completely out of control within 5 minutes if left to burn.

BTW, Hoosier Army Mom, Sondra K found a handy, at-a-glance pair of maps that can provide an idea of how moonbatty a state is. (Note in particular how California is black on the top map, white on the bottom.)

Posted by: V the K at March 13, 2008 7:26 AM

The maps are pretty much on the money. Arkansas, West Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky - not very moonbatty.

Pretty sure WV was the very last state to be without a Starbucks. Not that I have a problem with Starbucks making a buck selling overpriced stuff, but the presense of many of their stores is probably a pretty good indicator of the level of limo-libbery in a community.

Training to use a fire extinguisher? I'm looking at my (soon-to-be-illegal?) extinguisher right now, and there are a total of TWENTY-ONE words in the instructions. There are even little pictures for the subliterate. An eight year old child could effectively use this thing!

Posted by: PabloD at March 13, 2008 8:27 AM

The training thing is part of the essential nature of The Enemy. Their first question is "have you been on a course?".

They have no concept of understanding of informal knowledge. It is entirely beyond their worldview. They see the world as that which is documented, and that which is documented, for them, simply does not exist.

In a steady, gradual process, people are removed from doing things in any ad hoc manner, and are only allowed to do that for which they are officially trained. They can't comprehend that a person can use a fire extinguisher without training for the same reason they can't comprehend that a parent can raise a child without "parenting classes" (or indeed teach a child without being a "certified teacher").

This is the nature of Liberals, or Socialists, or whatever you wish to call them. They're scared, rules based, unimaginative people. They cannot understand a society in which a person may do all which is not explicitly forbidden; they can only cope with a society in which people can only do that which is explicitly allowed.

Well at least we know the potatoe can't use one.

THAT is sooooo perfect V, not to mention giving me hours of entertainment checking out where the worst infestations are! Thanks! You know... there is lots of land for sale in Wyoming and Montana... if you have millions to spend! But what beautiful country!

Posted by: HoosierArmyMom at March 13, 2008 11:50 AM

Well laddies;

You now have an excuse to drink more ales and lagers wherever you are. Fire extinguishers not being allowed, drunkenly fearless Brits can congregate and pee on small fires to at least make an attempt at fire suppression.

You might as well enjoy the booze before the government takes it away, so as not to offend the Muslims.

Britannia is dying and Churchill is crying.

Holy cow, I'm PSYCIC!
Back in the eighties when I was hearing the arguments against guns, I said that FIRE EXTINGISHERS could be banned for the same reasons! (You can get hurt, there are professionals, ect)

I also predicted a possible ban on FIRST AID KITS. Stand by for further bulletins.

Interesting; there is indeed an inverse correlation except in the Southwest. Texas seems to have as many Starbucks as California, but also has a considerable amount of Wal-Marts. I'm guessing this is because of Texan's richness relative to other conservative states.

Posted by: Arthur at March 13, 2008 2:50 PM

Oh yeah, I probably should say something on the topic at hand. The reason such nonsensical legislation is passed so easily is not because the legislators are for it, but the people are not against it. We've seen shamnesty beaten back more than once by popular demand. This wasn't stopped because they wanted it or more likely just didn't care. I don't know which one's worse.

Posted by: Arthur at March 13, 2008 3:04 PM

Wait until they realise that we have to 'break glass' to operate a fire alarm and we have to do it with our bare hands!! There could be health & safety riots
