Eco-idiocy Again Given Priority over National Security

Florence-Marie Cooper isn't the only kooky California judge to use whales as an excuse to poke the Navy in the eye. Now US Magistrate Elizabeth Laporte of San Francisco has ruled that the Navy must establish sonar-free zones, where enemy submarines can hide, because sea animals might be "harassed" by the sonar used to protect our country.

The Navy has been shutting off sonar when it detects "vulnerable creatures." That's not good enough for Laporte, who says it might miss small animals. Areas where she has forbidden the Navy to use sonar range from as near as Monterey Bay to as far away as the Mediterranean Sea and off the coast of Australia.

If I had known that becoming a magistrate made you ruler of all the seas, I would have gone to law school. Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and any other hostile countries that might want to attack us with submarines owe Laporte a heartfelt thanks.

On a tip from Byron.
