Spitting on America

W had a point when he said, "You're either with us or you're with the terrorists" — as the New York Times has proven once again with a hysterical editorial entitled "Looking at America":

In the years since 9/11, we have seen American soldiers abuse, sexually humiliate, torment and murder prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq. A few have been punished, but their leaders have never been called to account. We have seen mercenaries gun down Iraqi civilians with no fear of prosecution. We have seen the president, sworn to defend the Constitution, turn his powers on his own citizens, authorizing the intelligence agencies to spy on Americans, wiretapping phones and intercepting international e-mail messages without a warrant.
We have read accounts of how the government's top lawyers huddled in secret after the attacks in New York and Washington and plotted ways to circumvent the Geneva Conventions — and both American and international law — to hold anyone the president chose indefinitely without charges or judicial review.
Those same lawyers then twisted other laws beyond recognition to allow Mr. Bush to turn intelligence agents into torturers, to force doctors to abdicate their professional oaths and responsibilities to prepare prisoners for abuse, and then to monitor the torment to make sure it didn't go just a bit too far and actually kill them.

No sane person would mistake this for a reasonable characterization of American attempts to defend itself from Islamic terrorism. Yet the Times is broadminded enough to admit there are countries even more monstrous than ours:

The C.I.A. contracted out its inhumanity to nations with no respect for life or law, sending prisoners — some of them innocents kidnapped on street corners and in airports — to be tortured into making false confessions, or until it was clear they had nothing to say and so were let go without any apology or hope of redress.

Better is expected from our next president:

These are not the only shocking abuses of President Bush's two terms in office, made in the name of fighting terrorism. There is much more — so much that the next president will have a full agenda simply discovering all the wrongs that have been done and then righting them.

How will we ever right the wrongs we've committed against peace-loving terrorists? Closing down Gitmo would only be a start. Maybe we should pay reparations to al-Qaeda.

Osama bin Laden et al. could be dedicating 99.9% of their budget to paying the shady Gray Lady to spew this stuff, and they would be getting their money's worth. Terrorism is a form of warfare that simply wouldn't work if not backed up by fifth-column propaganda, which inflames and emboldens the enemy, undercuts our every strategy and most importantly, saps our will to fight.

On a tip from Conan.

Powerline has a good point by point refutation of this bit of vile hysteria here.

I don't know where folks get the idea the NYT slants left.

Posted by: Pinch Sulzberger at January 2, 2008 12:07 PM

Close Gitmo and house the terrorists in the NYT building. At least the editorials would be the same.

Posted by: Bandit at January 2, 2008 12:45 PM

I'm wondering why the lower ranking personal haven't been freed from their prison sentences for their involvement at Abu Ghraib. Considering they were obviously with us and not against us and were only following orders, why are they still in jail?

Posted by: andy42302 at January 2, 2008 2:06 PM

The NYT was just as bad back in the 1930's when Walter Duranty was their star reporter in Russia. He lied about everything to make Russia and Stalin appear as models for the rest of the world.

Posted by: sfw at January 2, 2008 2:12 PM

Okay. Let's close GITMO and take all the prisoners to the NYT and give jobs there. Let's see how they like them then.

Posted by: Richard Daugherty at January 2, 2008 3:56 PM

These assclowns act like Bush is up for re-election and their #1 job is to discredit him. I fart in the NYT's general direction.

Andy
"Only following orders" is called "the Neuremburg Defence". I'm sure you know nothing about it.
But please tell us why you are alowed to roam free amoung decent, honest folk when you spew ememy propaganda in time of war.

Posted by: KHarn at January 2, 2008 5:15 PM

KHarn, you are indeed a touchy group aren't you? Please elaborate on this fabricated "eMemy propaganda" that I've supposedly spewed. I fail to see it. I also fail to see the relevance in the Nuremberg Defense (not Neuremburg Mr 132 IQ) and supporting torture. Either you support torture or you don’t. Where do you stand?

Posted by: andy42302 at January 3, 2008 12:17 AM

Don't try to back me into a corner.
YOU said "they were only following orders" and I pointed out that that is the Neuremburg Defence. (which is crap in a court of law)
It would take too long to list the eNemy propaganda Liberals spew, so why don't you proove me wrong by saying something bad about ISLAM, if you dare. Why don't you say something about how they murder their own people, or strap bombs to CHILDREN, or stone women for what would be a minor, or NO offence in a free country like AMERICA? Do that, please, and I'll never comment on another of your posts.

Posted by: KHarn at January 3, 2008 9:59 AM

KHarn, to put it nicely sir, you are a coward and your debating skills are in the toilet. You give absolutely no rationale for your statements and you refuse to take a stand as it may show cracks in your imaginary armor that protects the world in which you live.
Let's put a few realities in perspective pertaining to this thread. The United States DOES torture and that's an undisputed fact. This practice HAS been endorsed by the White House and deliberately hidden from the public. George W. Bush deliberately lied, or to give him the best benefit of a doubt, distorted and/or cherry picked the truth to the public. Regardless, the United States DOES torture. If you deny this, then obviously you believe in the Easter Bunny as well.
Now KHarn, still with me? Okay then, so far, so good. Now, this thread seems to imply (as well as the contents of your poorly worded response) that said torture is justified because of the nature of the enemy and the atrocities we've endured. That isn't an unreasonable argument. I didn't question the rationale of that argument but rather that considering how the young privates et al. were doing what they would told, why are they prosecuted? You have refused to show the courage to take a stand as that would leave both doors open for you to belittle me. Bully for you. You continue to bring up the Neuremburg(sic) Defence as if this makes it okay. These trials were held in the city of Nuremberg and dealt with many Nazi soldiers who were ordered to slaughter the Jews. Many of these soldiers would have faced execution on the spot had they not complied. Are you saying its "crap" that they be pardoned or exonerated? Should they be punished? Do you KHarn have the balls to at least come clean with which you believe or do you still want to lay back and attack me for either side?

Are we fighting a war because of the actions you've discribed KHarn?

"Why don't you say something about how they murder their own people, or strap bombs to CHILDREN, or stone women for what would be a minor, or NO offence in a free country like AMERICA?"

What does this have to do with our fight in Iraq? If this is relevant, why haven't we been to Sudan where the Janjaweed have openingly raped and slaughtered the citizens, pulling babies from mothers arms and tossing them in bond fires? You're a coward KHarn and you disturbing inject soundbites and fear mongering that have nothing to do with our mission and only to make others look small----simply because you have nothing else and you refuse to offer anything constructive to the table. You then attack the opponent you've just lost to as "Liberals" in general instead offering a substantial rebuttal. So Mr. Chickenshit, continue to hide behind your monitor and cast your pebbles from any direction you like while taking no stand at all. Your hatred and need for liberal bashing brings out the best of that imaginary IQ you claim to aquire.

Posted by: andy42302 at January 3, 2008 1:33 PM

FIRST ANDY:
You continue to spew hate and accusations, rather than attempt to give facts.
SECOND:
You refuse to speak against THE WORLD'S enemies. Not one single word.
THIRD:
"You continue to bring up the Neuremburg(sic) Defence as if this makes it okay."
(From my previous post) "YOU said "they were only following orders" and I pointed out that that is the Neuremburg Defence. (which is crap in a court of law)"
Don't understand what "crap" means? It means "no good". The "Nuremburg Defence" is NO DEFENCE, yet you write that I was useing it to excuse DISREPUTABLE BEHAVIOR by a few of our troops. You are wrong, I have NOT done that.
FOURTH:
I don't use words like "chickenshit" and accuse others of "bashing".
FIFTH:
I am not "hiding", I am useing my real name and have posted my FULL name and address for those on the net who have threatened me.
SIXTH:
Our country went to war with Iraq because we were NEVER at peace with them after the First Gulf War. A CEASE FIRE was declaired, and Saddam violated that cease fire repeatedly. He also violated the United Nations mandates. He made deals for banned weapons and materials with FRANCE (Who Liberals like yourself have praised), GERMANY and RUSSIA.
SEVENTH:
IF this war was "for oil" we would have either siezed the oil fields and trade routs OR made a deal with Saddaam like FRANCE, GERMANY and RUSSIA.
EIGHTH:
I did not mean that YOU PERSONALLY were spreading enemy propaganda, I ment Liberals LIKE yourself. I appoligise for that.
NINTH:
Who is a coward? One who writes and speaks (I can't fight because I am a disabled veteran) against his country's enemies, or one who refuses to do so and suggests by his words that he AGREES with them?

I will let you go and not comment on your posts from now on. You have too much anger in your heart to reason with.

Posted by: KHarn at January 4, 2008 2:07 PM

KHarn'

First, I've spewed nothing. I simply asked a simple question and for that, you have attacked me viciously. You've still evaded my question.

2nd, our enemy was never an issue to my question. Either you support torture or you don't. You refuse to take a stand. Oh, I detest terrorist. Any other irrelevant discussion needed?

3nd, You brought up Nuremburg Defence, not I. Yes, I understand "crap" but you've yet to elaborate. If the Nazi soldiers disobeyed, they're guilty of war crimes. If they obeyed, they're guilty of war crimes. Should they have? What's your point?

4th Okay, you got me. "chickenshit" was inappropriate and in reality, inexcusable on my part. Accordingly, I apologize. With that said, you're simply a coward.

5th I really don't care about your identity.

6th I really don't care about your opinion of our rationale for war or your historic impression of the Gulf War. That's simply a diversion of your cowardness to respond to the issue at hand. Threadjack much?

7th "IF this war was "for oil"-- another diversion. I never mentioned oil just as I'm not the one that keeps bringing up Nuremburg. That isn;t the discussion here but something you want to throw in to direct away from your cowardness of addressing the issue and another feeble attempt to depict me as a defeatest.

8th Liberalist like myself? Judgmental are you? I'm assuming that if you don't march lockstep to your idealogies and bob your head in agreement with every issue, you sterotype as you like.

9th "Who is a coward? One who writes and speaks (I can't fight because I am a disabled veteran) against his country's enemies, or one who refuses to do so and suggests by his words that he AGREES with them?"---------- You are the coward and I have not uttered one word,,again, I've not uttered one word in support of our enemy. It's you coward, that has no intelligent rebuttal so you blame me for something that is absolutely a lie. A diversion to appease your own short comings. SHOW ME the words that I've used to support terrorist. Copy and paste them for me Mr Coward. You can't. You made it up because you have nothing intelligent to say.

"I will let you go and not comment on your posts from now on. You have too much anger in your heart to reason with."-----that's the most intelligent thing you can do as you've already made a big enough fool of yourself. Why would I expect anything other than that from a throw-a-rock-and-run blogger that buckles at the knees when confronted with an issue?

And last Mr. 132 IQ, it's "using", not "useing". While it's understood that typos can happen, repeated misspellings of the same word makes you appear ignorant or, considering you've learned so much, just plain stupid. Andy
