Johnny Depp Praises Serial Killer

The same Tinseltown glitterpig who denounces America as "a dumb puppy" and "a broken toy" has a favorable opinion of a fictional serial killer.

Eyeliner-wearing pirate Johnny Depp has this to say (from France) about the country that made him outrageously rich for posing narcissistically in front of cameras:

America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive. My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out.

Depp will be playing Sweeney Todd, a British barber who would slash his customers' throats and drop them through a hole in the floor. His opinion of Todd:

I love the character. […] I believe he's a victim. I believe he's a tragic figure.

Like most Hollyweenies, Depp can be counted on to denounce good and excuse evil.

Note to Johnny: don't talk. Just sit back and look pretty. You ruin it for me when you talk.

God that think with dumb puppy was long long time ago, besides it was stated that his words were taken out of the context. Besides, don't we all agree about this in some way?America is dumb, yes, but this doesn't mean that he as an American doesn't love his country...but he knows that they've done so much wrong in the last years. You can't just stay back and accept what especially Bush is doing."Posing narcissistically in front of cameras?" - hell, what do you expect if he is talented - he steals every movie with his appreance and all the money that he earned was well deserved! Johnny Depp is gorgeous, outstanding as an actor and has great personality!

That comment is so old! JD's children are 8 and 5 now, people need to get over this stuff. By attempting to make it current news, you are proving the point that the old comment makes. Maybe you are jealous of this man's talents, but I think rather than wasteing you energies on scoffing him, perhaps you might try opening your mind to being a person that's a cut above. Just a suggestion.

Posted by: Beth at December 8, 2007 8:53 PM

Oh please---this so old-this isn't news. Maybe you should check out the entire quote and the context in which it was given. With our current government that led us into a quagmire in Iraq, maybe Mr. Depp wasn't so far off from the truth. Also, his comments were not directed to the American people--there aren't too many celebs today that take so much time for their fans like Depp does. As for his praise of a serial killer---it's a character----read up on the musical. I also have some sympathy for Sweeney Todd as a tragic figure.

He's just too pretty and talented to get angry with!

Posted by: kathryn at December 8, 2007 10:11 PM

Hey, I'm as tired of pretentious liberal celebrities as the next sane man, but I think you're being too hard on Depp. He made that comment four years ago, and he publicly apologized for saying it in 2005, in the wake of the Muslim riots that devastated France. Experiencing that nightmare showed him that America's not exactly the worst place he could live in, so he learned his lesson and repented of what he said, I'd say it's time to leave him alone about it. Plus, regarding what he said about Sweeney Todd, I'd say he's right. In the story, from what I understand of it, the guy gets royally screwed over. He's framed and convicted for crimes he didn't commit, and he loses everything as a result, including his wife and daughter. I'd be angry, too. Plus, I believe he only kills the people who were actually involved in framing him and ruining his life. Sweeney Todd is basically a more homicidal version of the Count of Monte Cristo.
On a related note, I'm really looking forward to seeing "Sweeney Todd" when it comes out. Great things happen when Tim Burton and Johnny Depp work together on a movie (The rest of the cast looks pretty good, too), and the fact that it'll be an R- rated musical sweetens the pot even further!

Johnny: You're a fine actor (loved the whole "Pirates" series, and your take on Hunter S. Thompson was hilarious), but a dunce when it comes to geopolitical affairs. Act, my friend, and keep your mouth shut about things you know absolutely nothing about.

Posted by: jc14 at December 9, 2007 10:44 AM

All of you star-struck celebrity-swooning chicks need "to get over it." Why bring up the war in Iraq? It was started longer ago than Depp made his comment. Using your sparkling illogic, it should now to be a non-issue to you brain-dead liberal jackasses who fill your time with pop culture crap like Depp instead of informing yourself on matters germane to daily life.

VH, you must've gotten linked from an empty-headed, leftard, mouth-breathing website. The 'tards are dropping in for this Depp lovefest.

Posted by: skh.pcola at December 9, 2007 12:50 PM

I think you need to come up with someone new rather than rehash an old story. Johnny has said that he was misquoted by a German magazine years ago. This is not a recent quote.

Posted by: Janet at December 9, 2007 12:58 PM

Oh that sucks! You take a phrase that was written in a magazine (Johnny Depp denies he said it this way) many years ago and use it now to harm him, to harm the film!! Wow you're a brave one! Bravo! You're so full of crap!!!

As for Sweeney Todd, many people have that notion because of what he went through in the story. It doesn't mean that they (we) approve of serial killers.

Johnny Depp is a man of dignity - I don't think someone could say that about you!

Posted by: Amelie at December 9, 2007 1:15 PM

That's the problem with the right wing media...you take comments made out of context and can bend them to further your anti-Hollywood, anti-liberal agenda. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if you don't have to shut up and just be pretty, Johnny Depp doesn't have to either.

Posted by: Barb at December 9, 2007 1:24 PM

You have proven yourself to be quite the idiot. Not only is that an old, misquoted statement, but you obviously know nothing about the Sweeney Todd story. Why don't you get your facts straight before you go about slandering people?

Posted by: Kat at December 9, 2007 1:51 PM

I knew it would happen one day.
YOU ARE RERUNNING THE NEWS.
Can't you go out and find something new to write about? Mr. Depp made that comment years ago, the comment was taken out of context. But really when you look at it, America is the new kid on the block. Not everything we do is right. Not everything is wrong. We have to learn, like so many countries did before us. This does not mean that we do not love our country. Where is the post about Mr. Depp leaving Europe and flying home after the 9-11 attacts because "I love America and I just want to go home?"
As for Sweeney Todd, he is a tragic figure, he had his life torn from him, he was imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit. How many of us would want to react in the same way? I for one would.
However, I wouldn't, and neither would most of us.
Just one more thing you do know that Sweeney Todd
is a [FICTITIOUS] character don't you?

Posted by: Barbara at December 9, 2007 2:27 PM

skh.pcola, I'm not sure if you were talking about me when you made that comment, but I'm a regular on this site, not a troll, and I normally agree with what's said here. I just thought the OP was being too hard on Depp, especially considering that he publicly apologized for what he said and he hasn't made any really offfensive comments since then. If he kept on spewing out crap time and time again like Sean Penn or Rosie O' Donnell, then he'd deserve scorn.
Plus, I'm not a "Chick." I'm a guy who happens to be a bit of a fan of Depp and Tim Burton.

Posted by: Adam at December 9, 2007 3:12 PM

On his dog tag he has a picture of Che Guevera, who makes the fictional sweeney Todd look like a humanitarian. At least Todd kept the populace fed with his meat-pies

Posted by: James F McEnanly at December 9, 2007 7:23 PM

Re:skh.pcola's comments. Your ignorance shines through in your comments. Depp made his comments in 2003 which was when the US was already involved in Iraq. Too bad the truth hurts. As for "fan girls" of Mr. Depp, I admire many people, not just actors. Apparently I'm more up to date with current affairs than you are. Maybe you should take your own advice and keep your ridiculous comments "germane" to the actual discussion. By the way, glad I'm a "liberal" as it means "open-minded, progressive,"unprejudiced."

Posted by: CalGal at December 9, 2007 9:03 PM

I believe Mr. Depp's comments were directed to the Amerika that you represent not the America of the real People of this land. There is a large separation between the now government and the reality of every day life. I know. I work for this government and I do not like what I see and know.

Posted by: Firestar at December 9, 2007 9:50 PM

i'm not a big fan of celebrities and/or actors in general. However, Depp is smarter than the average, and his comments about America are right on!

Posted by: Anonymous at December 10, 2007 4:41 AM

With the exception of Adam and Anonymous, all pro-Depp comments were made by emotional, swooning, feeling-not-thinking women. Go figure.

Posted by: Crush Liberalism at December 10, 2007 8:11 AM

VH seems to have riled up a hornet nest of depp lovers....

Posted by: ttevolla at December 10, 2007 10:00 AM

Oh, please. Johnny made these comments to a German magazine that terribly misquoted him and he set the record straight. I love my country, but the politicians running it are definitely dumb puppies. As for bringing up the war in Iraq, I don't believe anyone here is trying to equate forgetting about Johnny's comment to forgetting about the war that is "suppose" to be over. At least, according to the President, it was declared as "over" a long time ago. Tell that to the troops who are over there watching their comrades in arms being blown to bits. I know this to be fact since my son-in-law just returned from 15 months there. There is no comparision between Johnny's comments being forgotten and "forgetting" about the war. Words can be forgiven and forgotten, acts of war cannot.

And I feel as though I must reiterate one of the comments here referring to Sweeney Todd....it is FICTION. You know, not real; not historic; didn't really happen. And not all of Johnny's fans are "emotional, swooning, feeling-not-thinking women". I am a 45-year-old woman, however, my husband, who is as big a fan of Johnny's as I am, is OMG...A MAN!!! And he's 56! My SON is also a fan....and he's 15. How many actors, singers, celebrities of any type do you know who can boast a fan base of men and women, boys and girls, ranging in age from 6 (my granddaughter, for example) to 80? I only know one....Mr. Johnny Depp.

Posted by: Beth at December 10, 2007 10:49 AM

Johnny Depp made that comment in France in English to a German reporter who translated what he had said into German and put it into a magazine. it sounded slightly different from what he had said, lost in translation as they say. they what happened was that some American people took the German magazine quote and translated what was there into English, which made it sound now way off from what was originally said. lost in translation again. It happens a lot, I know. I speak four languages and sometime mess up myself badly when trying to explain in another language what can only be said with those exact words in one language.

Posted by: Rita Ballantyne at December 10, 2007 12:04 PM

And not all of Johnny's fans are "emotional, swooning, feeling-not-thinking women".

My comment said that those who were leaving the pro-Depp comments here (and not "all across the world") are "emotional, swooning, feeling-not-thinking women". In light of your illiteracy, allow me to rephrase my characterization:

"emotional, swooning, feeling-not-thinking-nor-reading women"

Posted by: Crush Liberalism at December 10, 2007 12:25 PM

Whatever!!!! Johnny Depp is an accomplished actor. It does not matter what we or anyone else think. He will continue to be a good actor and make lots of money. Being an American, he has every right to voice an opinion. Too bad the opinion was ancient. 35 years ago I made a comment that America was stupid for Vietnam to my freshman history teacher. I now work for the government. Hope she does not bring that up and destroy my career. OH-MY-GOD!!!

Posted by: Spartanwoman at December 10, 2007 1:59 PM

Wouldn't you know that this article would bring all the overgrown-teeny-bopper-grlz-in-womens'-bodies to little Johnny's defense?

Posted by: Toa at December 10, 2007 8:57 PM

how dare any of you attack Depp fans as being emotional, swooning, feelers not thinkers. There couldn't be a better summation of what this blog is all about. Emotional, unsupported hyperbole strawman arguments are the order of the day on Moonbattery!

I call 'em like I see 'em, Toots.

Emotional, unsupported hyperbole strawman arguments

Unsupported, huh? That's why Moonbattery uses links and quotes, to support his positions. That you don't like the facts contained herein is irrelevant.

Posted by: Crush Liberalism at December 11, 2007 7:37 AM

OMG!!!! Like that comment is totally old, like four years ago. Fer sure!

He is really just a gorgeous hunk. So leave him alone or I'll totally post a video of me crying and raving in his defense on Myspace.

Posted by: Cindy the Prepubescent at December 11, 2007 8:47 AM

OH SHUT UP! Ur just jealous! Johnny is not wrong in thinking our country is f@#$ed up! It's going to hell in a hand basket!I don't blame him for wanting to raise his children wherever he feels they will be safe! As far as how he feels about the character Sweeny Todd, well, he just puts himself into his part and that's what makes him the greatest actor in the world!!!!

Posted by: Kim Goodwin at December 11, 2007 6:10 PM

You go gurl!!!!!!

Our country is like going soooo totally bad.

Why I like bought a movie pass at a supposedily swank local theater for $200 bucks and the bathrooms dont like even have automated hand dryers. I totally had to push a button!
