DC Building Deemed Too Ugly to Demolish

A Washington congregation is not permitted to demolish or even alter their own crumbling church precisely because it is hideous.

The Third Church of Christ, Scientist church, built in 1971, is costing them a fortune to maintain. But maintain it they must, because it has been deemed a prime example of the atrocious mid-century design school aptly called "Brutalism."

WaPo's Metro columnist Marc Fisher calls the building "antagonistic to human spirituality" and an "example of a failed and arrogant architectural experiment." This would explain why bureaucrats are imposing it on its own shrinking congregation by force.

So much for property rights and the separation of church and state.

The church is required to waste its funds maintaining this soulless monstrosity.

3rd Church of Christ, Scientist? Ive heard of the 1st and 2nd Church of Christ, Scientist - but the 3rd? Nope! LOL!

No one has to maintain it, just walk away from it. Besides 3rd Church of Christ Scientists can hide out in their underground lab where the tax man cant find them.

The building is not ugly, it's just mis-understood. All buildings have something to offer, and I thank you not to LABEL the building. It's not fair to this building to be called ugly. What about this building's self esteem.

I think we should setup a special program for this and all "challenged" buildings that will make them feel better. I mean why not, it's going to be as effective as the all programs we now have to make everybody feel better about themselves. All we need to do it is carbon tax old historic inefficient buildings to fund it.

No, you Bushalliburton neoconazi! The correct way forward as established by Fuzzy Math and the Bali Talks is to force all other over-performing buildings to slow down to the level of the 'extra care needing' buildings.

By the way, the name of the church is a dead give-away: It's a Christian Science cult branch, the same folks who believe:

God is the only intelligence and man has none, God is Father-Mother, the Holy Trinity is polytheism, Jesus was not Christ/Messiah or God, Jesus did not die on the cross, and there is no devil or sin or good or evil or matter or organic life, and especially no such thing as sickness that needs medical care.

If you think such beliefs are liberally Moonbatty bordering on New Age (Christo-)Scientology, well then, that explains the church design.
