Tear-Jerking Tale Goes Awry

At last: a little honesty in journalism. Mike Cassidy wrote a weepy piece for the San Jose Mercury News about homeless people living day to day at a Santa Clara Motel 6. The first time around, he tugged the heartstrings, but didn't get all the facts. To his credit, he published a follow-up piece:

Since the column ran, I've learned that LeAnn Jessup, 47, and her daughter Brittany, 20, are in trouble with the law. LeAnn pleaded guilty in July to passing bad checks at two elementary school fundraisers.
Brittany stands accused of the same crime and of writing a worthless check to her chiropractor. And mother and daughter have both been charged with skimming $2,775 from a San Jose Target store where LeAnn Jessup worked.

The fundraisers were to support special programs at Farnham and Fammatre Charter elementary schools. The put-upon Jessups received gift cards from local retailers in exchange for rubber checks:

"The bottom line is the children were ripped off," says Judy Reed, a parent volunteer who led Farnham's program last year.

When LeAnn worked at Target, she would ring up purchases for her daughter and then give her way too much change. Presumably this habit had something to do with her no longer working there.

Too bad she didn't just do her job and take home her paycheck; she wouldn't have ended up in the Motel 6, yanking on journalists' heartstrings.

The family that pulls illegal tricks together, winds up in Motel 6 together.

On a tip from Dan.

Hey, these woman live in Santa Clara, for Pete's sake. Each could get a job in the computer industry!

Hey, it could be worse. British Activists are out to ban books that don't have happy endings. If we had such laws, we'd never hear about sad-sack losers like the Jessups.

Oh, wait, that would be a good thing.

Yes, let's give Mr. Cassidy credit for righting a wrong. Wish more journalist would do the same.

"Among Neanderthals, hunting big beasts was women's work as well as men's, so it's a safe bet that female hunters got stomped, gored, and worse with appalling frequency."

So the point is that Neanderthals were too RETARDED to get out of the way?

Perhaps they couldn't figure out how to make weapons like spear-throwers ,bows or slings, instead of fighting face to face with their prey.
