Profile of a Democrat Donor
Mauricio Celis has been living large as a successful Texas lawyer, and according to MySA.com, has a reputation for "handing out fat checks to Democratic candidates." But despite owning the law firm CGT International, which allegedly has working branch offices from Mexico to DC (though their existence could not be confirmed), he does not have a license to practice law.
A real lawyer named Ray Thomas explains Celis's practice:
CGT International is, in fact, a sham law firm operating illegally, and is nothing more than a runner ambulance-chasing referral organization that has a history of referring cases that they have solicited improperly, and sent off to other lawyers.
Celis is not only a phony lawyer, but also a phony deputy:
Celis was at the center of a bizarre Sept. 17 incident in which a naked 25-year-old woman ran into a Corpus Christi convenience store about 4 a.m., initially claiming she was fleeing a sexual assault.
According to police, Celis appeared in a bathrobe, flashed a sheriff's deputy badge from nearby Duval County and told officers he would take custody of the woman.
He's under investigation for impersonating both a lawyer and a sheriff's deputy. But fake as he may be, he has a very important job as an ambulance-chaser for trial lawyers. The Guardian notes that trial lawyers "are considered the financial foundation of the Democratic Party in Texas."
As the Breck Girl might add: and not only in Texas. You might call them the moral foundation too.
Recipients of Celis's generosity unsurprisingly include Hillary Clinton. Her appeal coaxes large donations from all walks of life, from Chinese dishwashers to some of the jet set's most conspicuous consumers.
