Bible Banned at Beijing Olympics
Have you seen this in the mainstream media? I didn't think so:
Organizes of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing have published a list of "prohibited objects" in the Olympic village where athletes will stay. To the surprise of many, Bibles are among the objects that will not be allowed.
To think just a few weeks ago ChiCom bureauweenies were purring that they would offer religious services for foreigners at the Olympics. Services may have to be conducted without benefit of Bibles. Not that you need a Bible to worship the only god recognized by the Chinese regime or our media: Government Power.

Hat tip: NewsBusters, on a tip from Cheetah.
Update:
The veracity of the original story is in dispute.

This is sad. I believe we should boycott the Olympics for this reason alone. I am completely serious.

I don't know how it took so long for me to find this site. Just not advertised enough, I guess. Thanks to the link from Hot Air. I've gone back and read some archive articles and can genuinely say that I support the views of this site.
China should not be hosting the Olympics. But if anyone wants to go, go ahead.

As filthy as their air is, they shouldn't be hosting anything,
much less the Holy Ghost.

I heard this week that they are cracking down big time on believers and house churches in China in advance of the Olympics as well.

So are they going to ban the Koran as well? Consistency please!
Posted by: Brandon at November 5, 2007 11:07 AM
Beijing may or may not ban the Koran because of its restive muslim slaves, er, minorities in the west and northwest. And Beijing is genuinely worried about AQ turning any more of its attention away from the US and towards China.
Bad, bad China.

Didn't the IOC consider this when they awarded the O's to China? Or are they Atheists too?

If the Chi-Commies get around to banning the Koran, then the News Media will get around to covering this story.

Why does the Bible have to be a book? It could easily be smuggled in on a CD-Rom or as a file in a laptop.

Why don't we all do something about it? We should write editorials to our local papers, inform our friends and family and ask them to do the same, call our government officials and ask that the USA pull out of the Olympics, and let whoever is broadcasting them know that we will not be watching them. Christians need to stop being silent and weak. And even if our efforts are ineffectual here and now (as they will probably be), our ultimate motivation is not wordly success. We defend the truth for the glory of God and the salvation of our souls.

Political propaganda and religious materials are banned by the OLYMPIC CHARTER, not the organizing committee. Sorry folks, buy you are a victim of anti-Chinese propaganda.

It is NOT true that religious materials are banned by Olympic charter.
The charter says exactly this:
"No kind of demonstration or political, religious, or racial propaganda is permitted at any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."
It is a VERY far stretch to say that the bible is religious propaganda.

No, I didn't see the Bible ban news in the mainstream because it's TOTALLY false. You can read about the debunking in the mainstream media, though. Start here:

And then, move to the blogs, like this one:

How come I haven't heard about any of this on your blog?

When I read this story, I was curious, so I emailed the U.S. Olympic Committee to find out what they knew. Here is there email response:
We have received confirmation from both the International Olympic Committee and the Beijing Organizing Committee that Bible and other religious materials will be permitted in the Athletes Village for personal use.
The news reports that the Beijing Organizing Committee was considering a prohibition were completely incorrect and stemmed from a miscommunication between a journalist form Italy and a representative of the organizing committee.
In addition, there will be an area in the Athletes village where athletes, coaches and officials can worship - as is always the case at the Olympic Games.
