Interesting general problem to the fore here. In a free society, everyone must have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of movement, to make their views known via protest.

But much of what we call protesting today isn't so much protest, demonstrations, letting the government know what you think; it's harrassment. It's akin to the mass picketing by trade unionists here in the 1970s- using threat and bullying against businesses or, in this case, a government office. It's not intended to change a government policy, it's intended to close something down. We've seen this for instance here in the UK with animal rights "protesters" destroying peoples' lives and livelihoods with "protest" which is just plain threat, bullying and violence.

There needs to be some balance. We have legislation here against mass secondary picketing. I'm not saying that's necessarily the right approach (it effectively bans citizens from standing on the public pavement) but it is a recognition that a mass of people targetting some individual business aren't just protesting; they're using threat to harm others. Like trades unions, the leftist industry have enormous manpower at their disposal to create these threat situations. A business mobbed by hundreds of angry protest picketers every day will usually be ruined. They're weilding mob power against the vulnerable. (Yes, I recognise that this case is about a forces recruitment office, but the principle is the same).

What is the best approach for society to take, in terms of natural justice and protecting citizens?

How appropriate that Ms. Benjamin (who was born with the first name Susie) changed her name to Medea. Medea is a character in Greek mythology who killed her own children in order to revenge herself upon her husband for leaving her.

This woman also spent some time living in Cuba and ended up being deported for writing anti-government views in a government-run newspaper. I don't think the word "irony" is in her vocabulary.

Me too, Pam. I propose continuing to call her "Susie." In juxtaposition with her strident rhetoric it makes her seem ridiculous (presumably why she wanted to change her name).
